I had surgery at Foot & Ankle in Culpeper with Dr. Maryellen Waltz. I really liked her as a person so I was reluctant to post a review, but I feel it’s important for others to know about the experience I had there. Especially because it was never rectified. In 2024 I had the bunion correction surgery. I had the same surgery a little more than a year prior which went perfectly. I discussed with DR. Waltz what was going to be done, and we were both pretty clear on the fact that it was supposed to match the other foot and be as close to the same surgery as possible. (Considering two different doctors had done them). She even mentioned she would be more aggressive on straightening the big toe and get the bunion down to a smaller size. Almost a year after the surgery I start to notice that I’m having more pain than the first time, and it didn’t look like my big toe had been straightened at all. I reach out to her about the pain twice. First time it was plantar fasciitis. The second time I asked why it didn’t look any different, and to this day is extremely tight and can no longer bend it upward which causes pain everytime I walk, and more pressure on the bunion and hardware. She’s lets me know then (after I reached out a year later confused) that she decided while I was under anesthesia to make a game time decision, and not straighten the big toe or make the bunion smaller. She just fused the bone to stop the bunion from growing more. This is not at all what we had discussed. She did half of the surgery! She was supposed to do the fusion, and also correct the big toe (straightening it out and making bunion smaller). Dr. Walt’s response was that she did this because she didn’t want to overcorrect, sometimes over correcting can cause more pain later, and just because one foot needed it doesn’t always mean they both do. I had to reach out a year later to find out that only half of what I thought I was paying for was done. Over a year later I’m still paying off this surgery, and now I’m paying off physical therapy as well trying to get mobility back and pain relief. I still have more pain than I ever had before surgery in that foot, and I work on my feet. It’s a daily endless terrible battle. All because she did not stick to her word and do what we discussed. Of course she offered to repair it. So I’d have to pay for a second surgery, and take more time off of work while it heals. This could have all been done in the first surgery as we discussed. I had the exact same issue on both feet, and needed the same surgery on both feet. She was clear on this before putting me under. I found it very strange that she didn’t tell me this after the surgery that she did things differently, and I had to reach back out confused and in more pain than before. I am extremely disappointed. I trusted her, and now I feel that I was totally wronged, and I to pay for it with money and with pain! I still have another appointment with UVA, because the pain is not totally gone, and I’ve completed physical therapy. Over a year later it is not fixed. I got no money back, no relief on the payment, and was totally screwed over. Not only did this result in foot pain, but because my toe wasn’t straightened I am still not walking correctly (left foot I walk slightly on the side of the foot because of how the toe is bent) and this causes hip weakness, ankle weakness and pain, and back pain. All would have been avoided if she correct the toe as she told me she would be doing. People should be aware of this before they end up suffering more than before. Do more research on who’s doing surgery on you while you’re asleep. A longer drive may save you from years of issues, and money down the drain.
