Frequently Asked Questions About University Health Dominion Crossing Adult Congenital Heart Clinic
What conditions and services does University Health Dominion Crossing Adult Congenital Heart Clinic provide?
We provide comprehensive adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) care including evaluation and treatment for a wide range of congenital heart defects. On-site diagnostic testing and services include EKGs, echocardiography (including congenital echo), stress testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, Holter monitoring, catheter-based treatments, imaging (CT/MRI), interventional cardiology and coordinated surgical care when needed.
How do I schedule an appointment?
To schedule an appointment at the Dominion Crossing Adult Congenital Heart Clinic call 210-644-1230. You can also contact the University Health Adult Congenital Heart Disease program for more information about referrals and services.
Are diagnostic tests often available the same day?
Yes. We offer many diagnostic tests (EKG, echocardiogram, stress testing, Holter monitoring and cardiopulmonary exercise testing) on site and, when clinically appropriate, these can often be performed the same day to reduce repeat visits.
Do you provide pregnancy counseling and care coordination for patients with ACHD?
Yes. Our ACHD program collaborates closely with University Health’s Pregnancy & Childbirth team and offers pregnancy counseling and coordinated care for people with congenital heart disease who are considering pregnancy or are pregnant.
Do adults with congenital heart disease need lifelong follow-up?
Yes. Most congenital heart defects require lifelong follow-up even after childhood surgery or repair. Our ACHD program provides ongoing surveillance and specialty care tailored to each patient’s diagnosis and needs.
How often should I see an ACHD specialist?
Follow-up frequency depends on the complexity of your defect. Simple lesions may be seen every 2–5 years, while moderate or complex conditions typically need follow-up every 6–12 months; your ACHD specialist will recommend a schedule based on your condition and prior treatments.
Do I need antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures?
Not all patients require prophylactic antibiotics. Antibiotic prophylaxis is reserved for those at highest risk (for example, certain prosthetic valves or a history of infective endocarditis). Always check with your ACHD specialist before dental procedures to confirm whether prophylaxis is recommended for your situation.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring copies of prior medical records and operative reports (cardiac surgery or catheterization reports), recent imaging or echocardiogram reports, a current list of medications (including dosages), and any questions you want addressed. Having prior records helps your ACHD team provide the most accurate, efficient care.
