I came for the abs. I stayed for the people.
Four years ago, I walked into the studio with two goals: lose the COVID weight and get wedding-ready. I thought I was signing up for a workout, but I had no idea I was beginning a chapter that would change so much more than my body.
Over the years, I’ve been challenged physically, mentally, and sometimes emotionally. There have been days I felt strong and days when simply making it to class was an accomplishment. I’ve learned to push through the hard moments, celebrate the little victories, and keep going even when my body is telling me otherwise. 😂
But when I think about what has made these four years so meaningful, I always come back to the people and the relationships I never expected to find.
Tammy, where do I even begin? From the very beginning, you saw more in me than someone simply trying to lose weight for her wedding. You believed in me, encouraged me, and helped me recognize my own strength before I could always see it. You’ve watched me move through so many seasons—from preparing for my wedding to becoming a wife and a mom—and you’ve been a steady, familiar presence through all of them. You knew when to push me, when to remind me that I could do more than I thought, and when I simply needed encouragement. You celebrated the little victories with me and made the difficult days feel lighter.
Somewhere along the way, you became so much more than my instructor. You became my Pilates momma—someone I can lean on, laugh with, and count on. Your impact reaches far beyond the studio. You’ve helped shape the way I see myself, and I will always be grateful that this journey brought you into my life.
That same sense of connection is what makes Syd and Alexa such a meaningful part of my story. This year, the three of us had babies, and experiencing pregnancy, motherhood, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with it together has brought us even closer. I never could have imagined, when I first walked through those doors, that the people I met would eventually become the ones I’d text, laugh with, lean on, and share some of life’s biggest moments with.
There are also all the other familiar faces I’ve come to know over the years—the people who celebrate your wins, make you laugh when a workout gets brutal, notice when you’ve been gone, and make you feel welcome the moment you walk through the door. Some have become close friends outside of class, while others have simply added warmth and joy to these four years. Each of them has left a mark on my life.
When I started, I wanted to change my body. What I didn’t expect was to discover how much I enjoy challenging myself, how satisfying it feels to do something I once thought I couldn’t, and how much I would come to appreciate taking time for myself, especially now as a mom.
I came for the wedding body, but I kept coming back for the feeling I get when I leave class knowing I gave it everything I had. I stayed for the laughter, encouragement, familiar faces, and relationships that have become part of my everyday life.
Four years later, this experience is woven into so many of my favorite memories. It was there before my wedding, through becoming a mom, and during all the quiet, ordinary moments in between. And Tammy, you have been part of every chapter. You’ve watched me become someone I never could have imagined when I first walked through those doors, and you’ve encouraged me through every version of myself along the way. You didn’t just help me become stronger in class—you helped me believe in myself outside of it, too. I came looking for a workout and found a community, lasting friendships, and a Pilates momma who became part of my life. That is the part of this story I will carry with me forever. ❤️
