Orthopedic Massage
If you have any of the following: back pain, back spasms, pain from an acute injury, overuse muscle strain, shoulder pain, pain after surgery (research shows that massage can be an effective method to speed recovery and limit pain, reducing the need for painkillers), carpal tunnel syndrome, "tennis elbow", "golfer's elbow", any other elbow pain, whiplash, "runner's knee", are recovering from a torn ligament (like ACL), have any other knee pain, "shin splints", tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, etc. - then you might greatly benefit from an orthopedic massage.
Orthopedic massage therapy focuses on the soft-tissues and muscles that surround the joints of the body. Goals for an orthopedic massage session are typically injury rehabilitation — which include decreasing pain, increasing range of motion, and preparing the body to return to normal daily routines and active hobbies — or injury prevention. Also known as orthomassage, the techniques are designed to: 1) be pain-free (although that cannot be guaranteed), 2) restore balance to the joints, and 3) focus on alleviating any pain and tension in these areas and others linked to them.
Orthopedic massage therapy is a natural method to recover from pain and prevent it from happening again. There is even a good possibility that it could prevent the need for surgery in some cases — providing the pain is caught and taken care of early.
Although orthopedic massage therapy is often very relaxing, the main objective is to reduce muscle pain and strain. This type of massage may inspire you to set some goals of where you'd like to be in relationship to the effected joints as your results will be measured throughout the healing process.
Relaxation Massage
Most massage treatments will relax you, even while working out pain or movement issues; this one's all about the Ahhh factor. Incorporating primarily Swedish style a.k.a. "classic" massage strokes, relaxation massage uses a firm but gentle, smooth-flowing style that is designed to help you unwind and de-stress for total requiescence. But it does more than just that; it relieves muscular tension and helps release "knots"; plus it improves your circulation and range of movement.
Typically 60-90 minutes in duration, this luxurious massage will use all kinds of massage techniques including long strokes, gentle kneading, soothing fascia release, a few passive joint movement techniques, and perhaps some rhythmic rocking from side to side. You may even receive some reflexology if time allows. This is a passive treatment; meaning you just lie there, let go, and let the therapist do all the work. In other words, this is the massage to choose if you just want to chill out, and be pampered for a while.
This gentle, full-body massage is probably ideal for you if any of the following describe you:
you are new to massage
you have a lot of tension
you are sensitive to touch
you just need to unplug from your day for a while
Sports Massage
According to research in the North American Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, sports massage refers to “a collection of massage techniques performed on athletes or active individuals for the purpose of aiding recovery or treating pathology.” In other words, its purpose is to help active people prevent and address injuries while participating in their sport of choice.
Strictly speaking, the best time and place for a sports massage is at your sporting event just before and/or after you compete. What you are primarily getting in a clinic or spa setting is a maintenance sports massage, although preparation and recovery certainly will be a component dependent upon your personal goals for the massage.
At My Elite Massage, your sports massage will very much be an orthopedic massage, but with a mind towards your specific sports activity. Each massage will vary from person to person based on things like how often you engage in your activity, which muscles you work the most, previous injuries, and your personal goals. Whether you are weekend golfer, a professional marathon runner, or feel like you land somewhere between the two, your sports massage will be designed around your needs.
When you visit, we will address any of those slight annoyance issues that have cropped up between visits, follow up on previous problems, and/or do a full-body check to insure all the major muscles and joints are functioning correctly. (Part of a good sports maintenance massage is to keep an eye out for any burgeoning imbalances and address them before they cause problems.) And if you wish, your visit can also be an accountability checkpoint for any self-maintenance exercises, stretches, and postural adjustments you are working into your home self-care. Just like every massage at My Elite Massage, your session is customized to your goals.
Blended Massage
This tends to be my most popular massage as it usually leaves you feeling both loosened up and relaxed when completed. (If you're looking for a more traditional deep-tissue massage, keep reading this description.)
You may get some relaxation techniques in your orthopedic massage and the reverse is also true. Choosing a Blended Massage just indicates up front that you expect to need roughly equal parts of both styles or prefer a relaxation massage but know you have those one or two problem spots that really need to be addressed before your body will even allow you to relax.
This is also the closest to traditional deep-tissue massage that I do. However, you will not experience elbows, awkward positioning of any of your limbs, or my full weight drilling into one point of your body. Your deeper tissues will be worked on if needed, but the orthomassage allows me to do that in a gentler, kinder manner, without you feeling beat up at the end of the session.
A blended massage will typically begin as a relaxation massage but has more of a "search-and-destroy" mindset as we discover or work on known trouble spots throughout the massage. It integrates many of the orthopedic techniques into the relaxation style but may also include some myofascial release, some reflexology, possibly even a little bit of cupping massage along the way. None of the techniques used will step away from the idea of a relaxing massage without your permission.
At the start of your blended massage, you will decide which is most important to you, completing a full-body massage or attempting to fully work out the issues you know about or we discover. You may even change your mind during the massage regarding this. Ultimately, the results tend to be an increased sense of looseness, flexibility, and serenity.

I woke up this morning with so much pain I had to miss work. Kevin was able to fit me in at 11:30 am and patiently work with me until my pain was gone. He integrates several modalities seamlessly within the same session. I was impressed by the way he would return to my problem areas to reassess the alignment and repeating the correction when necessary. The session also included some traditional massage for that extra “feel good” touch but, I believe it was the orthopedic techniques that have me standing tall, weight loaded evenly between right and left leg. Not only will I be working tomorrow but, I plan to attend my martial arts class tonight! Thanks Kevin!
Frequently Asked Questions About My Elite Massage, LLC
Where is My Elite Massage?
My Elite Massage is in Room 11B of Melange Gallery of Salons, 400 Parkwood Ave, Suite 104, in Friendswood, TX (in the Acadiana Plaza on the corner of Parkwood & Sunset).
Where will my massage or bodywork session take place?
Your massage will take place in My Elite Massage's clinic.
For relaxation, blended, or prenatal massage, your massage or bodywork session, the room will be dimly-lit, comfortable, and quiet. Soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort.
For an orthopedic, deep-tissue orthopedic, or sports massage, it will be similar but feel more like a treatment room with the lights raised and music more as background noise. The table is also specifically designed for your comfort during orthopedic massage, but you may be asked to stand, sit, lie, and change positions more often throughout your session depending on your treatment needs..
Must I be completely undressed?
That depends. If you have chosen an orthopedic or sports massage, you are asked to bring shorts and, if female, a sports bra to wear during your massage. Most other massage and bodywork styles use techniques traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped (covered) during the entirety of the session.
Will the therapist be present when I disrobe?
No. For relaxation, blended, or prenatal massages, the therapist will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet and blanket.
For orthopedic, deep-tissue orthopedic, or sports massage, if you need to change clothes for the session, the therapist will leave the room while you do.
Will I be covered during the session?
During the more traditional style massages, you will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
During orthopedic and sports massages, you will be dressed.
What parts of my body will be massaged?
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, hips, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. Sometimes abdomen is included but that and five other areas (scalp, face, pecs, glutes, and feet) require your express written and verbal permission prior to the massage.
In an orthopedic, deep-tissue orthopedic, and sport massage, your massage will be assessment-based, meaning that although each of the above-mentioned areas will be tested, massage treatment is only performed on those areas in need of it.
Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork?
There are several hundred types of massage and bodywork; various modalities utilize different strokes, including basic rubbing strokes, rocking movement, posture and movement re-education, application of pressure to specific points, and more. We can discuss which methods may be most appropriate for you.
