What to expect from the Vascular Lab If you are experiencing signs of peripheral arterial disease or show other symptoms that may be related to vascular conditions, your doctor may recommend one or more tests in CORE’s Vascular Lab. These are non-invasive, ultrasound-based tests that measure the blood flow in major veins and arteries. Vascular Lab tests can reveal blockages caused by plaque build-up in your arteries, blood clots in your veins, as well as possible signs of aneurysm (a weakening or bulging of an artery). Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may recommend any of the following non-invasive tests: Upper and Lower Arterial Duplex Ankle Brachial Index Renal Duplex Lower Extremity Venous Duplex Venous Perforator Mapping Upper Extremity Venous Duplex Carotid Duplex Duplex Scan of Hemodialysis Duplex Vein Mapping Creation Of Hemodialysis Abdominal Ultrasound Preparation for the Vascular Lab There is little or no preparation necessary for most patients who are scheduled to have tests in the Vascular Lab. If your visit will involve tests in the intestines and other structures in the abdomen, you may be asked to refrain from eating or drinking after dinner the night before your test. This restriction would include water, coffee, chewing gum and mints. When you arrive for your test, you may be asked to disrobe and put on a gown or sheet to allow the technician access to the part of the body being tested. After your Vascular Lab visit There is no recovery necessary from these minimally invasive tests. Your physician will receive the results of your diagnostic tests in approximately two business days. If results to these non-invasive tests are inconclusive, your physician may recommend additional tests such as an angiogram or computed tomography angiogram (CTA).

What is Open Revascularization? Open revascularization means placing a graft (synthetic/vein) to bypass a blocked vessel and revascularize a threatened extremity. At Core Vascular Services, open surgical bypass is reserved for patients who are not candidates for endovascular interventions. The open surgical bypasses include but are not limited to: Open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair Aorto-bifemoral bypass A surgical procedure in which the surgeon uses a graft – either a blood vessel from another part of the body or one made of synthetic fabric – to bypass a blockage and restore blood flow to a blocked abdominal aorta. Typically requires a hospital stay of five to seven days. Axillo-bifemoral artery bypass Femoral-femoral bypass A surgical procedure in which a graft is inserted to bypass the blocked area of the femoral artery in the thigh or groin to restore normal blood flow. Typically requires a hospital stay of two to three days. Femoral-popliteal bypass / distal artery bypass A surgical procedure to bypass a blockage in the popliteal artery near the knee, using either a vein from another part of the body or a synthetic graft. A hospital stay of two to three days is usually necessary. AV graft placement/AV fistula creation Subclavian-carotid bypass

What Does Endovascular Mean? Endovascular procedures uses a minimally invasive approach to re-opening blocked vessels and restoring blood flow to a threatened extremity. These procedures were originally designed for patients who are poor candidates for open surgery. Over the years, results have continued to improve and indications have been expanded to all patients. At Core Vascular Services, over 80 % of our patients have been treated successfully with this method reserving open surgical bypass for patients who can not be treated endovascularly. Our primary focus is limb salvage reserving amputation of the limb as a last resort. The endovascular procedures performed include but are not limited to the following: Diagnostic peripheral arteriograms Percutaneous peripheral balloon angioplasty and stent placement Percutaneous peripheral atherectomy Mechanical and chemical thrombolysis Coil embolization of arterial venous malformation Endovascular aortic reconstruction of abdominal aortic aneurysms Diagnostic and therapeutic shuntograms / fistulograms / venograms

The wellness program was birthed through my wife and practice manager Samantha Pringle. Samantha helped lay the foundation for CORE Vascular Services. She had a passion for women’s health and through her diagnosis of uterine cancer, we gained a greater appreciation of health, wellness and how diet dictates the body’s response to disease. It was through her fight with cancer that I gained a better perspective of the struggles that patients endure battling disease as the husband not the doctor. How it impacts patients physically, mentally and economically. C.O.R.E.
