I’m beyond frustrated with my recent ER visit. I went in for an asthma attack—something that should have been handled quickly and reasonably—but somehow ended up with a bill over $19,000. What’s even worse is being charged for things I never received or consented to. There’s an additional breathing treatment listed on my bill that I did NOT receive at all. On top of that, I was forced to take a pregnancy test after clearly stating my tubes are tied and there was no possibility of pregnancy. My concerns were ignored, and I was still charged for it. This experience felt less like patient care and more like unnecessary and inaccurate charges being added. There needs to be more transparency, accountability, and respect for patient consent. I would not recommend based on this experience.

Two stars because the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, this place is just like all other medical establishments, and is primarily focused on maximizing your billable services. They will try to keep you longer than necessary and will not base your care on your own specific condition. They prefer to follow standard protocols based on generally accepted approaches. This is not optimal for each individual patient, obviously. Providers should base their diagnoses and decisions on specific patient conditions and data collected from labs instead of just following a canned process for every single patient. God what a mess.

A family member of mine went to the Family Hospital for a rash while taking an anti-epileptic. He was stable, his labs were normal, and the rash was already improving. Despite this, two providers pushed to transfer and admit him to stop a medication that has been the only one to control his epilepsy. The second I calmly questioned that plan and tried to provide context, the tone changed. (For context I work in dermatology and was consulting TRAINED dermatologist on my family member's situation, in which they disagreed with the family hospitals plan). I was immediately interrupted, talked over, and spoken to in a raised voice. The male physician repeatedly said, “Can I get a word in?” while not allowing me to finish a sentence, and told me multiple times I did not have the credentials to be part of the discussion. In all my years of medical training and being at every doctors visit or hospital admission for this family member, I have never seen a doctor treat a patient and their family so poorly. What could have been a respectful conversation turned into being belittled. Patients and family members have every right to advocate and to understand the reasoning behind major medical decisions. That should not be met with hostility. He decided to leave AMA and the next day, a dermatologist confirmed the rash was not caused by his medication. He has stayed on the medication, and the rash has continued to improve. I truly hope these providers reflect on how they speak to patients and their families. More respect and composure would go a long way for everyone involved. I hope future patients of this hospital are treated a whole lot better than we were.

We received the best, friendliest, fastest service I've ever seen from an urgent care! Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Hospital at Lake Travis

Will you accept my health insurance?

Our emergency department accepts all health insurance for emergency visits, regardless of network status. We prioritize your emergency care first, then address financial matters. We collaborate with your insurance provider to resolve the details of your emergency room visit. Please note that all health plans are required to cover emergency room visits at the same level as in-network providers.

How much will it cost without insurance?

The cost of an emergency room visit can vary based on the required medical care. Generally, you can expect to pay between $400 and $1,850 for the visit, including imaging and lab work. For extended observation periods (3 to 24 hours), the self-pay rate is $3,000. If you're concerned about costs, consider our FHS membership program, which covers ER visits. Individual memberships start at $125 per month, with options for couples and families available.
