What is mpox (or monkeypox)? Am I at risk, and how can I get treatment?
Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a rare disease caused by infection with the mpox virus. The current risk of getting mpox is very low for the general public, but it's still good for everyone to know the facts about the symptoms, prevention and what to do if you get sick.
Allies offers the mpox vaccine for those who are eligible. The mpox vaccine consists of two doses, and people need to get both doses of the vaccine for the best protection against mpox. The second dose should be given 4 weeks after the first dose. Talk to your provider about whether or not you should get the mpox vaccine.
According to the CDC, symptoms of mpox can include:
Fever
Headache
Muscle aches and backache
Swollen lymph nodes
Chills
Exhaustion
Respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)
A rash that may be located on or near the genitals (penis, testicles, labia, and vagina) or anus (butthole) but could also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth.
The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing in 2 to 4 weeks.
The rash can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.
You may experience all or only a few symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms or believe you have been exposed to mpox, please call Allies at 412-345-7456 to make an appointment with one of our medical providers.
