First time ever walking out of an appointment and flat out just driving away.
While it was not the first time I encountered poor bedside manner. I have always tried to just stay & find common ground for a reasonable solution.
If you are dealing with chronic pain or complex injuries, I strongly encourage you to pay attention to how you are treated here. Specifically, my encounter was with James A. Craig Jr.
While I would stay away from
Scott Rainey as well.
No one should go to a medical setting seeking answers & leave feeling dismissed, judged, invalidated & frankly interrogated. A patient should leave feeling advocated for & treated with dignity.
I came in for pain related to injuries sustained after being hit by a drunk driver. Living with ongoing pain can be taxing in many ways, so entering a medical office & immediately feeling viewed with suspicion & stereotypeing, instead of compassion was unfortunate.
Craig asked personal questions regarding my attorney & personal meds I have been on for an extended period of time prior to the injury. The focus felt less on understanding my condition and more focused on questioning my credibility & motives. Craig asked the the reasons for taking my personal meds & I stated the reason and that it was NOT for pain, nor was it aiding in anyway to decreasing my pain. Craig still chose to emphasize this & include this in my medical notes. I requested it be removed due to not being relevant, he declined to do so,deeming it necessary for “medical accuracy. “
The body language & communication throughout the appt seemed consistently condescending. He commented that I rolled my eyes, while seeming completely unaware of the dismissive and antagonistic tone he himself had established and maintained for most of the visit.
Nothing more wholesome than a grown man commenting on an adult woman’s facial expressions in the middle of a vulnerable medical appt. He did nothing to empathize with me, but please let me control my face better.
I was told I was “not accepting the truth” about not having a prolonged injury, despite another qualified medical provider ,who has treated me over a longer period of time & is familiar with my case identifying said issue. An issue that Craig stated simply “Was not there.” He stated, he did not want me to have any unnecessary surgery, but no individuals or myself had ever suggested that as an option. Instead of acknowledging that medical professionals can hold differing opinions, he quickly undermined that other provider’s qualifications/credentials without even understanding his background or scope of treatments. Professional Ego should always take a back seat to Collaborative Patient Centered Care.
He repeatedly stated that he was “not saying” I was not in pain, yet much of his behavior and questioning, seemed to communicate the exact opposite.
If this is supposedly just “minor muscle tension,” then why am I experiencing numbness, pins and needles in my shoulder, and extreme pain directly along my spine? When I asked that, he did not seem to be able to respond. Those are real symptoms that have impacted my daily life & are the exact reason I have continued seeking medical care in the first place.
I am not seeking any type of “secondary gain.” I am seeking quality of life. I have spent a major amount of time seeing specialists and pursuing legitimate medical care because I am genuinely trying to decrease my pain. I would much rather be present with my family than sitting in medical offices trying to convince people that my pain is real.
Experiences like this are part of a larger dysfunction within Healthcare System that many patients quietly experience: Being treated like a checkbox, while deeper or ongoing problems are minimized.
For me, the overall experience also left me feeling disrespected, as though my concerns were not being evaluated as objectively as they should have been. It has left me questioning whether professional alignment could be possibly influencing clinical judgment, intentionally or not.

I am very angry and feel dismissed and misunderstood. I have never experienced a doctor's office refusing to go forward with a consult when I have the referral and the very medical condition I was told by their office that they treat. For context, my situation is very common, is not complex, I don't even take but 1 prescription medication and what I am seeking is a common treatment for said condition. I do not take pain pills and am not seeking pain pills.
With that being said, before I could get an appointment, I had to fill out a "second opinion" form and send a bunch of records. This was no easy task as I had to contact several offices within my prior health network during business hours and I work full-time, wait for return calls back, fill out forms and mail them, etc. Fine. I did all of that. So, I was surprised when today I received a call from the office stating the doctor had reviewed my request and records and that they would not go forward with my consult. They recommend I consult back with "your regular pain doctor". I was very confused and taken aback because 1) there is no way they have all the records as I just mailed the release form to my AHN ortho doctor a couple of days ago because it took awhile for them to send it to me and 2) what regular pain doctor? I don't have one, which is what I was seeking through this office. I asked for clarification as I was truly confused as to why I am being denied a consult and she had no additional reason or information to give me, just kept saying for me to consult back with my regular pain doctor. I DO NOT HAVE A PAIN DOCTOR. Is this the Twilight Zone? When I clarified that I don't have a pain doctor and that I was referred here to find a pain doctor, that I can no longer see the doctor I had started pursuing treatment ideas with because I have switched from Highmark/AHN to UPMC and the prior doctor is only in network with Highmark, that apparently didn't matter. They had no specific reason to give me as to why I am not able to get a consult here. So, I am still in pain, and have wasted hours of my time making calls and sending records, only to be turned away because? ? No reason. I wish I would have read the reviews on here before pursuing this office. Seems they are not interested in truly helping people. Or maybe only certain people. Certainly not me for some reason. What an absolute waste of my time.

I've only had top notch care with this practice and believe me I had researched the Doctors before trusting them with my care and surgeries when needed. I'm a nurse and highly recommend this practice to everyone I know!
