At Will Vision and Laser Center, we only offer technology that is considered the best-of-the-best. While many generic, corporate visions centers claim to offer advanced LASIK, what you may be getting is average-quality care with an outdated laser operated by a specialist with less experience than you’d like. When you visit Dr. Brian Will and his team for LASIK surgery in Portland, you will receive world-class care from one of the most respected names in vision correction surgery, as well as Bladeless Wavefront-Guided Lasik – the gold-standard in laser vision correction. Dr. Will and Will Vision have received industry accolades including being selected as a Center of Excellence by Johnson and Johnson Vision®, CorneaGen® and Zeiss®. Dr. Will and his team of seasoned professionals have one goal – to ensure your personal best vision. Customizing your Bladeless LASIK Procedure with Wavefront Technology The development of Wavefront technology has been central to driving improvements in conventional Lasik laser vision correction, providing a level of visual clarity that glasses and contact lenses cannot match. Wavefront guided Lasik, using the iDesign platform, provides a level of vision that is unparalleled in the industry by defining a precise, 3D model of your specific eye structure and its unique optical characteristics. This pre-treatment mapping is the critical information that is the basis for your custom Lasik procedure plan. It is also five times more accurate than all previous generations of Wavefront technology found at competing centers, 25 times more accurate than glasses or contact lenses, and it measures sources of blurred vision that glasses or contacts cannot correct. The combination of these advantages provides patients at Will Vision and Laser Centers with truly amazing vision quality following their Wavefront-Guided bladeless LASIK procedure. Today, more than 2,000 surgeons worldwide have incorporated the bladeless LASIK method into their practices. In fact, all the top U.S. ophthalmic teaching institutes use the bladeless LASIK laser technology to train future generations of LASIK surgeons. Dr. Brian Will is dedicated to quality care and his patients receive the personalized attention and visual results they need and deserve. Dr. Will provides a safe, effective, and accurate approach to patient diagnosis and treatment. The Safest Technique Available, Better Visual Results Improving the safety of the procedure is only one of the many benefits bladeless LASIK offers. This method of vision enhancement has also been shown clinically to deliver better visual outcomes in both standard and custom LASIK procedures with more patients achieving visual acuity of 20/20, 20/15 and even 20/12.5. These remarkable results are the product of the optimized technology which is instrumental to the treatment process. The precision of the laser creates the smoothest treatment surface possible, thereby providing ideal vision correction. Bladeless Wavefront Guided LASIK – The Only System Trusted by the US Military Don’t just take our word for it. The US military exclusively treats it aviators and war fighters with bladeless Wavefront-guided LASIK, the identical technology used at Will Vision and Laser Centers. The US military considers this method indispensable for enhancing the sight of personnel involved in the performance of critical military operations. It is also the technology used by NASA to treat astronauts, scientists, engineers that are traveling to the weightless environment in the International Space Station. Bladeless LASIK in Portland – Today’s Gold Standard Will Vision and Laser Centers introduced bladeless LASIK, alternatively known as all-laser LASIK, to the Pacific Northwest in 2002. Today, this method of performing laser vision correction is recognized world-wide as the most advanced and safest method of LASIK surgery. Patients who are intimidated by traditional vision correction surgery don’t have to worry about manual tools used in their procedure; bladeless LASIK uses only lasers to correct complex vision problems. The VisuMax® and iFS® femtosecond lasers used at Will Vision and Laser Centers are the most advanced lasers in the world. Generating up to 500,000 pulses per second, they are nearly 10 times faster and use nearly 10 times less energy than the comparable lasers used at competing centers. The reduced energy markedly decreases injury to the delicate nerves and living cells, which results in improved healing and significantly less postoperative dry eye, compared to alternative systems.

The Power of Customization You’ve heard the adage that “you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear”. Trying to produce consistently excellent vision with outdated LASIK technology is just as foolish. Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result”. Unfortunately, many LASIK surgeons today still mindlessly use outdated traditional LASIK for their patients, apparently believing that they can create good results with old technology. Today’s cure for refractive insanity is Wavefront guided laser treatments. So what exactly is Wavefront? That can be a complicated question to answer. However, remember how the Hubble telescope was out of focus when NASA first sent it into orbit. To correct the scientific blunder, optical engineers fitted the blurry Hubble with a Wavefront corrective lens and the new images were “out of this world” – well actually nearly out of this universe. Incredible space age stuff. Well, that same technology is what drives advanced wavefront guided laser vision correction. Whether you are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism, Wavefront guided laser vision correction provides a clarity of vision that is truly unequaled by older traditional LASIK. Most normal eyes can experience some blur, glare or halo effects around lights or have some residual blur even with the best glasses and contact lenses. In addition, in the past, it would occasionally happen that post LASIK patients experienced an exaggerated effect of those same unwanted visual distortions. These problems are caused by small irregularities in the way that the light is bent or refracted by an optical system – problems that optical engineers refer to as higher order aberrations – things like coma, trefoil, spherical aberration, tetrafoil and a myriad of others that are only referred to through mathematical symbols. Wavefront guided laser treatments work just as elegantly as the optical upgrade on the Hubble telescope. By measuring all of the lower and complex higher aberrations in your eyes, we can create a unique laser treatment plan that can reduce or eliminate all of the weird distortions that are specific to your particular anatomy. Custom LASIK for Your Unique Eyes It’s the ultimate in customized designer surgery and the optical equivalent of Hubble telescope technology for your eyes. And the results can be just as amazing. With Wavefront, your vision can frequently be even superior to normal 20/20 acuity. Kind of ”supervision” for the ordinary man. Unlike other LASIK centers trapped in a time warp in the past, at Will Vision and Laser Centers we don’t reserve wavefront guided treatments only for aspiring “superheroes”. We believe that every person deserves his or her best personal vision today. So, if a lifetime of absolutely stellar clear vision without the hassle of nighttime glare and halos sounds like your cup of tea, wavefront guided treatments are your procedure of choice. With wavefront-guided treatments at Will Vision you can start imagining what you can accomplish as you launch your new career as a superhero. While we can’t give you vision to see through walls, stop a speeding freight train or peer into the edge of the galaxy, with wavefront laser treatments we can provide you with amazing personal best vision today. WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR CUSTOM INTRALASIK PROCEDURE Frequently Asked Questions About IntraLASIK in Portland How is IntraLASIK different from traditional LASIK? LASIK surgery is a two-step process. First, Dr. Will creates and folds back the corneal tissue flap. The cornea is the transparent, dome-like structure covering the eye’s iris and pupil. By creating a flap in the cornea, Dr. Will can perform laser vision correction on the inner cornea layer, which practically eliminates discomfort and allows for rapid visual recovery. Traditionally, LASIK created the corneal flap with a handheld mechanical device with a metal blade called a microkeratome. Although this method worked well, the performance of these devices could be unpredictable. Although LASIK complications are infrequent, this mechanical device is frequently the source of many reported complications. Dr. Will emloyss the precision laser with IntraLASIK to create the corneal flap. The laser accuracy (+/- 10 microns) is unparalleled by other vision correction surgeries. This advanced technology gives Dr. Will exceptional control and allows him to customize the corneal flap for every patient. Because of its reliable accuracy, IntraLASIK makes it possible to treat many patients who didn’t qualify for laser vision correction due to thin corneas. Is IntraLASIK safer? Is the IntraLASIK painful?

Chronic dry eye can be highly frustrating and expensive to treat using eye lubricants and medicines, with prescriptions such as Xiidra® or Restasis® frequently costing over $500 per month. At Will Vision, we are at the forefront of the most effective diagnostic and treatment modalities for our patients. We have found MiBo ThermoFlo® and LipiFlow® treatments to be an invaluable tool in ensuring that our patients can attain their personal best vision. No other LASIK center in the region has the MiBoFlo® or Tear Science® diagnostic or therapeutic systems to ensure happy and healthy eyes both before and after your procedure. Visit us today and See the Difference! What Causes Dry Eye? The human tear film consists of three layers – mucin on the eye surface, water in front of the mucin, and a layer of oil on the surface. The meibomian glands, located on our eyelids, secrete the oils that lubricate the eye, reduce evaporation of tears, and stabilize the water layer – helping it to remain balanced between blinks. Due to current lifestyles, which involve the use of prolonged exposure to computer screens, these glands described above frequently become blocked – even in young patients. The images from our advanced LipiView® imaging system seen below demonstrate common problems with the meibomian glands including blockage, gland tortuosity and total gland loss. LipiScan meibomian gland imaging at Will Vision & Laser Centers Gland Dysfunction Causes of MGD MGD (meibomian gland dysfunction) is the most common cause of dry eye in the United States. It is prevalent, progressive, and creates the following eye symptoms: Stinging and burning Sandy or gritty feeling Redness of the eyes Fluctuating vision Contact lens discomfort Difficulty while reading or using electronic devices Once these glands are damaged, they cannot be replaced, but we can improve the function of those glands that remain. For most patients, successful treatment of MGD requires removal of the gland obstruction. Removal can be performed using the LipiFlow® or MiBo ThermoFlo® systems. Modern and Effective Treatments for Dry Eye With over 30 million people suffering from chronic dry eye in the United States, no one solution fits all. On one end of the treatment spectrum, there are lubricating eye drops and eye medications, which are convenient and provide short-term relief; on the other end, patients can choose MiBo ThermoFlo® or LipiFlow® as one of the longest-lasting and higher-end treatments available. LipiView System®, LipiScan®, Vision Break Up Time, & LipiFlow® MiBo ThermoFlo® or MiBoFlo® At Will Vision & Laser Centers, we offer the LipiView® II and LipiScan® technologies, which analyze over one billion data points in each eye. They are the only instruments available that measure the lipid (oils and waxes) layer and evaluate blink dynamics. We can capitalize on real-time information to understand dynamic eye response and lid closure while blinking. The Vision Break Up Time test (VBUT) from Visiometrics allows us to assess how clear the vision is in the eye and are able to assign how much loss is attributable to the tear film. Using double pass wavefront optical engineering, this test provides highly accurate information regarding the degree of light scattering caused by dry eye. The VBUT test also demonstrates improvements in the tear film over time associated with the treatments. The LipiView® II and LipiScan® systems also assess the meibomian gland’s structure, producing high definition pictures of these glands. This is especially useful, as meibomian gland dysfunction is prevalent amongst patients seeking laser vision correction and treatment for chronic dry eye. We are one of a small handful of clinics in the Pacific Northwest to use LipiFlow® and MiBo ThermoFlo® for the treatment of MGD. LipiFlow® is the only FDA approved single-dose treatment for MGD that has been shown to improve gland function and dry eye symptoms with long-lasting results. In the FDA trial, 86% of patients that received only a single LipiFlow treatment did not require additional prescription therapy for dry eye symptoms. Unlike hot compresses, lid scrubs, or older treatments for MGD, the LipiFlow® system applies heat to the inner eyelid, causing the meibomian oils to become liquid and the glands to open. A pulsing massage is then precisely applied to the eyelids. This combination of pulsation and massage gently cleans the blocked material out of the glands and allows them to function properly once again.

Photorefractive keratectomy or PRK is the “original” laser vision correction procedure. The concept behind PRK drove the first wave of laser vision correction procedures in the early 1990s. As a surgical procedure, PRK has continued to undergo refinements, and has a place among modern vision correction solutions used today. While PRK is less prevalent than LASIK, there are many circumstances where this treatment method is the recommended course of action to supply your personal best vision. To learn more about PRK in Portland and whether you qualify for this procedure, contact Dr. Will at Will Vision and Laser Center today! PRK vs. LASIK Vision Correction Surgery The primary reason why PRK is not as common as LASIK is the slow recovery process. While LASIK patients notice a difference in the quality of their vision within a few hours or a day, healing from PRK can require a week; patients take several days off work for recovery after their surgery, and their vision slowly becomes clear over the following weeks. While both PRK and LASIK use laser technology to treat the cornea, PRK does involve the use of some manual tools, while LASIK can be laser-only and bladeless. Dr. Will recommends PRK in specific circumstances for patients who do not otherwise qualify for LASIK-only procedures. He carefully examines patients to suggest the procedure that will ensure their personal best vision and a safe procedure with minimal side effects. If patients will not be able to achieve clear vision and improved quality of life with LASIK, PRK bridges the gap and provides the customized treatment necessary. Dr. Will incorporates Wavefront technology to individualize your surgical plan and applies laser energy for effective corneal reshaping. If you have a question about PRK or LASIK, we welcome you to our office for a personal consultation with Dr. Brian Will. Understanding the PRK Procedure The PRK technique differs from LASIK in that, before applying the laser to reshape the cornea, Dr. Will removes the top layer of cells on the cornea, called the epithelium. Having completed this step, he performs the laser vision correction process to change the cornea to the desired shape. Dr. Will then applies a medication to the cornea and to reduce the chance of after-effects, such as corneal haze which creates a cloudy appearance. Finally, we rinse the medication away with a saline solution, and place a contact lens in the eye to serve as a temporary covering while you heal. You’ll need to keep the contact lens in your eye continuously until the epithelial layer grows back over the cornea, which typically occurs within three to five days of your procedure. From a quality-of-vision perspective, there is no fundamental difference in the results delivered by LASIK vs. PRK. LASIK is not superior to PRK or vice versa. Like LASIK, the goal of PRK is to correct errors in refraction such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. With advanced excimer lasers, like theJohnson and Johnson Vision –VISX Star S4 IR, it is also easy to use PRK to perform Wavefront-guided treatments directed at correcting both simple and complex vision abnormalities. Dr. Will can complete your PRK procedure in as few as 15 minutes if he is treating both eyes – even less if you are only having one eye targeted. Post-Operative Care During the healing phase, you will need to be diligent about applying anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and lubricating drops into your eyes. We frequently send our patients home with medication to help with sleep and improve comfort for the first few days postoperatively. Dr. Will ensures you have complete instructions for what to expect immediately after your procedure and in the following days and weeks as healing progresses. We will ask you to wear the contact lenses placed after surgery until Dr. Will approves you to remove them. Your vision will be blurry for several weeks before it begins to clear. Ultimately, the quality of vision will be indistinguishable from LASIK. Do You Qualify for PRK in Portland? At Will Vision and Laser Centers, we typically select PRK as an option when a patient’s cornea is not considered thick enough to undergo LASIK surgery. However, because we use the iFS Advanced Femtosecond laser, we can complete exquisitely precise surgical protocols, so we can often perform LASIK for patients that who told that they need PRK by surgeons who either don’t have access to advanced technology or who have inadequate experience in treating patients with thin corneas.

The Myopia Epidemic If you have trouble seeing things clearly from far away, you may be nearsighted and part of a growing number of people who have this focusing problem. Since the introduction of computers, tablets and digital phones there has been a significant increase in the number of nearsighted people in the United States and other developing countries. This change is particularly alarming in the US pediatric population where nearsightedness is becoming nearly epidemic. Although historically eye doctors believed nearsightedness to be primarily an inherited trait, there appear to be clear environmental factors that can influence the frequency and severity of this vision focusing problem. When the environmental factors are ignored or left untreated, those people predisposed genetically to nearsightedness may experience even further progression of this common vision disorder. Lasik is an ideal way to treat myopia, the technical term for nearsightedness. Correcting the vision permanently through surgery and avoiding those factors that cause progression can provide you with a lifetime of clear healthy vision. Will Vision and Laser Centers has been the trusted name in modern vision correction in the Pacific Northwest for decades, offering the skill and expertise of our world renowned refractive surgeon, Dr. Brian Will. Come visit us by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Will to see how we can correct your case of nearsightedness and fight this growing trend. Appointments may be made at any of our conveniently located offices near Portland, OR today! What Is Nearsightedness? Nearsightedness, also known as myopia or shortsightedness, refers to an eye condition in which individuals can clearly view objects up close but struggle to see those that are far away. The further an object is in the distance, the blurrier it may appear. Those who are nearsighted may not realize it at first, as not every object will appear blurry. For example, those who are nearsighted generally have no difficulty reading a book or computer screen but may struggle to see traffic signs that are several hundred feet away. Those who are nearsighted may also experience such ailments as frequent squinting, eye strain, headaches, and feelings of fatigue while driving or playing sports. What Causes Nearsightedness? In the past, genetics were believed to be responsible for nearsightedness. However, environmental factors that appear to cause nearsightedness have recently been identified. Based on recent population studies, the most likely sources for this newfound prevalence in nearsightedness is the increased use of near vision for viewing smart phones, tablets and computers. In addition, large scientific studies have linked light exposure to progression of myopia. As a result of this new research, eye doctors can now suggest that nearsightedness may be worsened by: Prolonged reading in low light Looking at a smartphone, tablet or computer screen for excessive periods of time Spending too much time indoors These studies suggest that people who spend more time outdoors in bright sunlight experience less progression of nearsightedness than those who spend most of their time indoors in artificial light. Bright light appears to stimulate the production of growth hormones that decrease the tendency for the eye to continue to elongate and create myopia. Identifying and Preventing Nearsightedness Diagnosing this condition as soon as possible is for the better. Regular eye exams are important to help determine the issue, as nearsightedness often develops at an early age. If you are nearsighted, there’s a high possibility your child will become nearsighted, too. If either you or your child has nearsightedness, several behavioral changes may reduce its progression: Wearing vision correction (eyeglasses) to minimize eye strain Reducing the number of near-tasks you or your child perform by restricting screen time Taking frequent breaks by focusing in the distance Spending more time outdoors in recreational or work-related activities that do not require prolonged near-focusing With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Will has the expertise to determine the cause and severity of the condition as well as the ability to recommend the best solution for your eyes. Most importantly, Dr. Will has only one goal when it comes to treating his patients – to create a lifetime of amazingly clear vision. As every person and every eye is unique, Dr. Will personally meets with every patient and thoroughly examines their eyes in order to craft a solution that is ideal for their specific condition and visual needs.

There has never before been a treatment for dry AMD, until now! Will Vision & Laser Centers is introducing Valeda® PBM — a non-invasive, in-office light therapy for patients with retinal health concerns such as dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Be among the first in the Portland area to access this life-changing technology at our Center for Retinal Rejuvenation. Note: Initial availability: Vancouver/Portland and Salem coming soon Physician referrals welcome. How Valeda® Photobiomodulation (PBM) Works PBM delivers specific wavelengths of red, yellow, and near-infrared light to the retina. These wavelengths penetrate the retinal layers and energize the mitochondria—specifically cytochrome c oxidase, the enzyme responsible for cellular energy production. When the mitochondria function better, the retina becomes less inflamed, less stressed, and more capable of repairing itself. AMD damages the retina partly because of oxidative stress and energy failure. PBM delivers light that the retina’s cells use as fuel. This boosts ATP production, reduces inflammation, and restores cell function. The result: better visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and retinal health. Benefits of Photobiomodulation Controlled clinical trials (e.g., LIGHTSITE studies) demonstrate: 5 to 7 letters of improved vision on average (roughly one line on the eye chart). Improved contrast sensitivity. Reduction in drusen volume in many patients. Enhanced retinal metabolism and function. Can PBM Arrest or Reverse Dry AMD? PBM slows progression, reduces cellular stress, and improves function. In some patients, PBM reverses certain structural changes (e.g., drusen load). While it is not a cure, it is the first meaningful interventional therapy for early/intermediate dry AMD. Key Points: Non-invasive sessions in a comfortable setting Treatment series over several weeks Complements nutrition and lifestyle care Who May Benefit Dry AMD patients — Supports retinal function alongside standard care Early changes — Drusen or family history of AMD Lifestyle-minded patients — Pairs well with nutrition and exercise OD / MD Referrals — Full coordination with your doctor Note: Eligibility and results vary; our team reviews your diagnosis and imaging.
