Last year was amazing; I even brought my husband to get his eye exam. This year was the complete polar opposite. The front office staff are amazing, no complaints there. However, things went downhill once I went to the back for their version of an eye dilation test. The machine was terrible. It didn't look or smell like it had been sanitized after the prior patient, and I had to get so uncomfortably close to it that my lips were touching the machine. After moving on to the visual field test (which was fine), to be quite honest that wasn’t clean either, still could see grease residue and an eye lash. I understand that alcohol evaporates, but if you’re going to use Lysol spray or any other type of spray, wipe it down. Don’t just spray and move along. I shouldn’t see grease residue or an eye lash. I went into the exam room. I overheard the technician explaining my concerns to Dr. Smith, and they were speaking disrespectfully about me. I cracked the door open because if you are going to talk badly about a patient, you should do it to my face. Dr. Smith immediately walked in huffing, defensive, and offensive. I pointed out that he was coming in "hot" with a patient, and he admitted he was because I had "offended" his technician. How could I offend her simply by asking to skip a test because my lips were literally touching a dirty machine? I was not comfortable with that, especially since I’ve been wearing glasses for over 35 years and know how these tests usually work. Dr. Smith then had the AUDACITY to tell me my lips weren’t touching the machine. How dare you try and tell me what a part of my own body was touching? He became combative, and I straight up told him that I was now on the defensive. He claimed I didn't have to do the test but then proceeded to try and pressure me into it. Not only was I completely uncomfortable by this point, but I also just had this done by an ophthalmologist this summer. Why would I proceed to work with a rude, dismissive older man who comes into an exam room hostile? In today's climate, as a Black female, I no longer feel comfortable being treated by that type of man. By the way, the women up front are lovely, and I even complimented the secretary because she’s a beautiful lady and her makeup was top-tier. But I will not be returning to see this doctor.
