I tried to get my Suboxone filled here in December (I usually get it filled in Columbus, but I was home for Christmas) but the lead pharmacist said that the prescriber is too far away. I was confused and accepted that answer, but I asked her what I should do to get my medications then. If you don’t know, Suboxone causes HORRIBLE withdrawals. She seemed angry that I asked that and said “Go to a real doctor in the area.” ? It was from an MD, just not in Toledo?
When I went home, I tried everything. I called my old PCP in Toledo, I called my old psychiatrist in Toledo, I called the mental health services urgent care … they all said they can’t fill it and I need to go to the hospital because I’m going to get sick. At this point, I looked it up, and there is no Kroger policy, nor pharmacy policy, nor law that states the provider MUST be in “the area”. My provider is licensed in Ohio.
I called Kroger and I asked if it’s a personal policy or belief the pharmacy has, or if it’s a Kroger policy. I was speaking to a younger girl, so she put me on hold to talk to the lead pharmacist for ten minutes. She came back and said it’s a pharmacy policy (which is a lie.) I told her my situation, and asked what the policy specifically is — how close does the provider need to be? He’s 2 hours away. She started stammering and then went silent, and I said, “like in the same city?” and she said “um, yeah, um, in the same city.” Obviously just made it up on the spot because that’s what I said. I probably shouldn’t have said anything, but at that point I knew they were all lying to me and I had to play their game to get my life saving medication. I explained that I’d call everyone in the area and I was having withdrawals, so I asked if she could reconsider. She bluntly said no, so I thanked her and ended the call.
I spent Christmas in the hospital because of these people. Why??? Why do you think you have more control over my health, and know what medications I need, over my doctor? I know this entire thing was probably because they thought I don’t need suboxone. They probably thought I was trying to get high off of it because I’m an attractive girl in my 20s with nice skin and teeth and hair. I’ve been recovering for YEARS. Did I have to show a photo of me as a drug addict? Also, you can’t even get high off Suboxone. It has a ceiling effect. Maybe a pharmacist wouldn’t know that, but a doctor does.
Thanks to this shitty pharmacy with a power complex ran by narcissistic, incompetent, rude, judgmental, nasty people, my entire family’s Christmas was ruined. It was like it gave them a thrill to exert this control over a young girl. It was sick. People like this should not be in healthcare.
Btw, after that I transferred my meds to Meijer on Conant. Never had an issue. No “um, yeah, um in the same city” policy there 🙂
TLDR: If you need medication that’s dangerous to stop taking (which is pretty much every medication), DO NOT get it filled here! You could get sick, die, or pay a 10k hospital bill. I don’t want you to have to go to the hospital because of these malicious people on a power trip. Meijer on Conant are lovely people, very sweet and fast.
