- IMIan MarkramJun 21, 20261.0I am a patient in the late stages of ALS and rely on my power chair for everything in many ways it’s an extension of my body and the tilt function stopped working rendering the chair inoperable and leaving the chair stuck in one position. When I contacted NSM after waiting for 35 minutes to speak to someone they were able to diagnose the problem remotely and said that it needed a part and transferred me to the local branch in Columbus OH only to be told that I would have to wait 4-6 weeks for the part and then another 2 weeks to schedule the repair! I pleaded with Michael the customer service agent if there was any way they could expedite the process given my situation, he could not have been more disinterested in helping me and just repeated their 4-8 week laborious process he did offer a loaner but was quick to point out that it may take 2 weeks and I would have to go in and collect it and that it would be a “basic “chair and then offered me a manual chair! It is clear that he has no understanding of what someone with ALS is going through. My small wife has to maneuver a 600 pound chair around the house. I find it very hard to recommend NSM.

- ALAleta LentzApr 20, 20262.0The process getting my daughter's chair after insurance was approved, took about three months. I was told it would be a long process. My only issue has been the lack of communication. I called and emailed the lady we have been working with and left several voicemails and nothing. We finally now have her chair and it's great quality. February 26th, we sent in a doctor's note to have a Hitch Lift sent through insurance to get that going and it's almost been two months and they show in their notes they can't get in touch with Dustin, so no order has been sent in. Dustin already has everything needed to send this order in. We have a chair, but no way of transporting it. I think after one week of not being able to reach Dustin for this order, something should of prompted someone to reach out to me and give me an update as well as try a different way to reach him. I cannot see Dustin not getting back to a request after two months. He was a very nice guy and was prompt with measurements and everything needed on the home front. I have contacted them again today and even emailed. They said they would reach out to Dustin again. Everyone has been very friendly, but the communication has really been a nightmare.

How long does it take to get a new power wheelchair from NSM?

Why must I see a doctor to get a wheelchair from NSM?
Our clients have mobility challenges and are referred to us by therapists and physicians to receive mobility solutions that meets all their unique needs. If you need a wheelchair, your best plan is to talk with your physician or therapist and get a thorough evaluation from a qualified Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS).
What if my medical condition changes?
Contact your local NSM branch and notify us of any changes that may affect the proper fit and function of your chair.
Are there any dangers in using an off-the-shelf wheelchair?
Definitely. A standard or not customized chair can cause more harm than good. People come in all shapes and sizes; their chairs must be designed to fit them. In severe situations, a standard or not customized chair may:
- Cause significant physiological and psychological problems
- Lead to an increase in dependence because it’s not used due to lack of comfort
- Cause pressure sores, or decubitus, due to improper cushioning
- Become obsolete quickly if not configured to “grow with the child”
- Become a major expense to replace or reconfigure, because most funding sources will only reimburse for a new chair every five years.
Do I have a choice of which mobility solutions company to use?
