This is my favorite gym/location by far. I’ve been a member of several gyms over the past decade, including some high-end ones, and none of them compare to this place. In this huge space (that is very open and bright with beautiful views considering it’s on the water) besides the gym itself, there’s a boxing ring, several basketball courts, sand volleyball, a salt water swimming pool, a running track and other options. The Cantina has some pretty good protein-packed meals and snacks as well. It’s pretty amazing!

I was a member of Chelsea Piers Fitness for nearly seven years and, for much of that time, genuinely enjoyed the club. I primarily used the climbing gym, yoga program, and occasionally attended Muay Thai classes. Unfortunately, over the years I watched membership costs increase significantly while staffing levels, programming, and amenities declined. My biggest concern is the climbing program. Reduced staffing appeared to coincide with a decline in supervision and training opportunities. During my membership, there were incidents involving members failing to properly clip into auto-belays, resulting in serious falls and injuries. At the same time, classes and instruction that helped educate climbers were reduced or eliminated. I raised these concerns directly with management. My emails to the General Manager went unanswered, while the Regional Manager responded and indicated that member feedback could help influence decisions regarding staffing and operating hours. In an effort to gather constructive feedback from other members, I created a Google form. Shortly afterward, my membership was terminated. When I asked for a clear explanation of what I had done wrong, none was provided, which left me feeling that the termination was retaliatory. What is most disappointing is that the climbing community at Chelsea Piers was once one of its greatest strengths. Instead of investing in that community, management appears to have prioritized cost-cutting measures that reduced services and member engagement. There are now competing facilities that offer lower prices, longer climbing hours, stronger instruction programs, and a greater emphasis on safety. I hope senior leadership takes a serious look at member concerns and reconsiders the direction of the climbing program, because Chelsea Piers Fitness has lost much of what made it special.
