My family member was a patient/resident at Surge Rehab from Friday April 24th to Monday May 11th. My review is based on that time experience.
Upon arrival to the rehab on a Friday night, we quickly realized that the weekend service here is lacking. My family member was not given the correct medication for about 3 days, which is important daily prescription ones. We were able to rectify the discrepancy and are grateful to the nurse, Diane, for her prompt attention.
Overall, the staff there is doing the best with what they have. This location is in a nicely wooded residential area in Middle Island which actually makes it a nightmare for parking! Be mindful about that as it was an issue on every visit, weekdays after 5pm was not as bad and weekends were manageable. This is a major issue that may involve the municipality to look at.
Upon arrival, you must use their slightly antiquated Covid like machines that measure your body temperature, it seems a bit off putting but there is usually a front desk person to also help with that. The place itself is comfortable but not very exciting. I know there is a lot that can be done to liven up the place.
My family member was on the second floor with a shared room and a shared bathroom stall with a sink in the room. This configuration works well for safety but has minimal privacy.
I removed a star for the fact that there were 2 nurses on an evening shift who forced my loved one to go to bed early, as if this place was a prison. They were also not as kind and caring and therefore we made sure to ask for them to be placed elsewhere. Fortunately I did not interact with them and do not wish to reprimand them but I would CAUTION anyone who has a loved one there to ask about their routine and night time protocol as the overall comfort of the patient/resident will determine their overall rehab: which is the point of this place.
As far as the exterior space, the front lawn has a cute but in need of repair, smokers only (gross!) gazebo type structure that needs some love. There is a hair salon on first floor that also needs some love and has an amazing beautician who does amazing work!
My loved one said the food was very good overall, the coffee could be better and in general the staff was kind and helpful. Our social worker was a very kind gentleman named Okey, he was helpful and did the best he could! We also met Dawn who was kind, Larry was also extremely helpful, Yvette was amazing and other staff in the PT department.
There are some minor changes that could make Surge even better but truly for us the best outcome is leaving, and we are grateful for their support during the time we needed it.
