Not only do today’s implants look great, but they also last longer than previous models and provide attractive, healthy results you can enjoy year after year. Implant Material You have the option of saline or silicone breast implants. Each type offers its own advantages and disadvantages. Saline breast implants are available to women 18 years of age and older. Saline implants are rolled up, inserted through a small incision, and filled with a harmless saltwater solution after they are placed inside the breasts. Saline implants are more affordable than silicone implants. Downsides of saline implants are they may wrinkle, ripple, and feel firmer than natural breast tissue. Silicone breast implants are available for women who are at least 22 years old. Our surgeons use only safe, high-quality, FDA-approved silicone gel implants, which look and feel more like natural breasts than saline-filled implants. Patients often describe them as feeling soft and doughy. Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants. We offer both those that contain highly cohesive silicone gel and the latest implants made with form-stable silicone gel. These popular new implants come in an assortment of shapes, profiles, and sizes, and are commonly called “gummy bear implants” because of their similarity in texture to the soft but solid candy of the same name. Implant Size Although the question of size is mainly a matter of personal preference, it’s important to consider your natural anatomy and proportions when choosing a size. Most women want results that look natural, so it’s important to select a size that complements your curves. We often recommend patients bring in photos of women who have breasts that are what they’d like to achieve, either from our photo gallery or elsewhere. Our surgeons can walk you through your options to help you understand what size is likely to work for you and your body. Implant Shape Implants can be either round or teardrop shaped. Many women choose round implants because they add volume to both the upper and lower portions of the breast for a voluminous result with enhanced cleavage. Teardrop implants, also called “anatomical” implants, mimic the shape of natural breasts, with a tapered shape and a bit more volume toward the bottom. These are ideal for women in search of more subtle results. Implant Profile The term implant “profile” describes the degree to which the implant projects from the chest compared with how wide it is at the base. Finding the right option for you helps to increase fullness proportionally around all areas of your breasts. However, the profile that is appropriate for you largely depends on your body type and chest width. Your surgeon can examine your body and help you understand which profile option is best for you.
