Services

Welcome to Mitchell Dental Studio, where our mission is to provide comprehensive dental care tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. Dr. Evan Mitchell and our dedicated team are committed to helping you achieve and maintain optimal oral health through a range of general dentistry services. We are happy to explain to you the various services we offer, including exams, cleanings, dental fillings, oral cancer screenings, tooth extractions, and X-rays, to ensure your smile stays healthy and vibrant. General Dentistry in Rio Rancho Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings The Importance of Regular Check-Ups Regular dental exams and cleanings are the cornerstone of preventive dental care. During these visits, Dr. Mitchell and our hygienists will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums, looking for signs of decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Early detection of dental problems can prevent more serious issues down the line, saving you time, discomfort, and expense. What to Expect During a Cleaning Our professional cleanings are designed to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that regular brushing and flossing cannot. Here’s what a typical cleaning involves: Scaling: Using hand instruments or an ultrasonic scaler, we remove plaque and tartar from your teeth surfaces. Polishing: A special paste or pumice is used to polish your teeth, removing any remaining biofilm and leaving your teeth smooth and shiny. Preventive Treatments: Depending on your oral health, we may recommend additional services such as fluoride treatments or dental sealants to protect your teeth from decay. How Often Should You Get a Cleaning? The American Dental Association recommends that most people have their teeth cleaned every six months. However, this interval can vary based on individual needs. Dr. Mitchell will provide personalized recommendations to ensure your oral health is maintained effectively. Dental Fillings Restoring Function and Aesthetics When cavities occur, dental fillings are often the best solution. Fillings restore the function and appearance of a tooth that has been damaged by decay. At Mitchell Dental Studio, we use high-quality materials for fillings, ensuring they blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. General Dentistry for Albuquerque Oral Cancer Screenings Early Detection Saves Lives Oral cancer can be life-threatening if not detected early. During your routine exams, Dr. Mitchell performs thorough oral cancer screenings to identify any signs of abnormal tissues or lesions in your mouth. Tooth Extractions General Preventive Dentistry in Rio Rancho, NM When Extraction Is Necessary While our goal is to preserve your natural teeth, there are times when a tooth extraction is necessary. Severe decay, damage, or overcrowding may require removal to maintain overall oral health. Dental X-Rays Diagnostic Imaging for Accurate Assessment Dental X-rays are an essential tool in diagnosing and treating various dental conditions. They provide a clear picture of your teeth, bones, and surrounding tissues, allowing Dr. Mitchell to detect issues that are not visible during a standard exam. FAQs What Should You Do if You Have a Dental Emergency? You could experience unexpected tooth pain, a broken filling, or any situation causing sudden discomfort. It’s important to call the dentist as soon as possible. While waiting, you can apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and rinse your mouth gently with warm water to keep the area clean. What Are Your Options if You Have Sensitive Teeth? You could try using toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth, as well as a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid adding stress to enamel. Limiting acidic foods and drinks may also help. If the sensitivity persists, Dr. Mitchell can evaluate whether you need treatments like fluoride varnishes or dental sealants. Can You Eat or Drink Before Your Dental Appointment? You might want to avoid a heavy meal right before your visit. If your treatment includes sedation, you may be asked to refrain from eating for a specific time. Drinking water is usually fine, but always confirm any pre-appointment instructions when you schedule so you can be prepared. What’s the Best Way to Care for Your Teeth at Home? You can maintain optimal oral health by brushing twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash. Paying attention to technique, using gentle, circular strokes near the gumline, helps prevent plaque buildup. How Does Diet Impact Your Dental Health? You might not realize how much your diet influences your teeth. Sugary snacks and acidic beverages can contribute to tooth decay. Consider nutrient-rich foods, including vegetables and dairy, for stronger teeth. Drinking water after meals also helps rinse away leftover particles.

At Mitchell Dental Studio, under the expertise of Dr. Evan Mitchell, we understand the importance of a healthy, functional smile. Restorative dentistry plays a crucial role in achieving and maintaining this goal. It encompasses a range of treatments designed to repair or replace damaged or missing teeth, thereby improving oral health and chewing function. Restorative Dentistry Rio Rancho The Essence of Restorative Dentistry Restorative dentistry is aimed at restoring the health, functionality, and appearance of your teeth. Whether due to cavities, tooth decay, damage, or missing teeth, restorative dentistry offers solutions to bring back your smile's integrity. Dr. Mitchell and our team are dedicated to providing personalized treatment plans that address your specific needs, ensuring your smile is both beautiful and fully functional. Who Needs Restorative Dentistry? You might be a candidate for restorative dentistry if you have experienced: Cavities or tooth decay Damaged or broken teeth Missing teeth Restorative dentistry is not only about fixing problems but also preventing future issues, preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible, and enhancing the overall appearance of your smile. A Closer Look at Restorative Dental Procedures Restorative dentistry includes various procedures, each designed to address particular issues related to tooth damage or loss. Here are some of the most common restorative treatments provided at Mitchell Dental Studio: Restorative Dentistry Rio Rancho Fillings For teeth affected by decay, fillings are the first line of defense. After removing the decayed portion, Dr. Mitchell fills the cavity with a tooth-colored composite material. This not only halts the progression of decay but also restores the tooth's shape and function. Crowns When a tooth is significantly damaged or decayed, a dental crown may be necessary. Crowns, sometimes referred to as caps, are custom-made to fit over the entire tooth, providing strength and protection while also restoring its natural appearance. Root Canal Therapy Root canal therapy is required when decay or damage reaches the tooth's pulp, causing infection. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning the canal, and sealing it to prevent further issues. Often, a crown is placed afterward to ensure the tooth's strength and durability. Bridges and Implants Missing teeth can be replaced with dental bridges or implants. Bridges use adjacent teeth as anchors for a prosthetic tooth, while implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as a base for a crown, bridge, or denture. The Importance of Restorative Dentistry Restorative dentistry is vital for several reasons. It improves your ability to chew and speak properly, alleviates pain and discomfort, and enhances your smile's appearance. Moreover, by addressing dental issues promptly, you can prevent more severe problems in the future, contributing to your overall oral health. Transform Your Smile at Mitchell Dental Studio If you're experiencing dental issues, don't wait any longer. Dr. Evan Mitchell and our team at Mitchell Dental Studio are here to help. Healthy teeth start at a young age, when proper oral health habits are formed in the first years of life. Whether baby, infant or teenager, you can help your child maintain proper oral health habits now that can save them from uncomfortable, costly treatments in the future. Keep your little ones smiling beautifully with regular dental visits designed just for them! These visits are created to provide a relaxing yet interactive and fun experience, taking the stress out of visiting the dentist and educating your child on proper oral health habits — all in one shot! What Dentistry Services Do We Offer for Your Child? “Baby and Me” Visits As recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s first dental visit should take place six months after their first tooth emerges, or by the age of 1 at the latest. When you bring your baby in for their first visit to our practice, we will provide a gentle yet thorough examination of their gums and any teeth present. We will use this time to educate you and provide you with home care tips that will ensure your baby’s sound oral health. A “baby and me” visit is non-invasive and does not require any X-rays. Child-friendly Visits We provide regular check-ups for children to ensure for the healthy development of their teeth and gums, prevent oral health problems from starting and diagnose dental issues as early as possible (before more in-depth treatment is needed). These exams are stress-free and relaxed; our dentists engage the child by answering their questions and providing a hands-on tutorial on how your child can brush and floss properly. Your child will be able to go through the motions of brushing and flossing, often with the use of fun, kid-friendly toothbrushes and other props used to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. It is recommended that children have dental visits every six months. Dental Cleanings Regular dental cleanings should begin when your child is one year old. These cleanings are often performed during a child’s routine dental exam. A dental cleaning will protect your child’s teeth by removing buildups of plaque, tartar and any stains or discoloration. Our children’s dental cleaning process uses a soft, electric toothbrush and a special, non-abrasive toothpaste. A fluoride treatment may also be used in conjunction with your child’s cleaning, to further reduce the risk of tooth decay. Kid-friendly Dental Care Depending on the child’s age and his or her dental needs, we offer a variety of treatments to address oral health issues. Dental fillings, made of composite resin (which matches the color of your child’s natural teeth) are used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay. Dental sealants, which cover the grooves (chewing surface) of your child’s tooth or teeth, may also be used to protect teeth from tooth decay. Dental injury care may be needed if a child experiences trauma to the mouth, such as during an accident or while playing sports. A mouth injury may cause tooth loss, broken or chipped teeth or teeth that shift inside the mouth. Any number of treatments may be recommended to repair or replace your child’s teeth, including dental bonding, crowns and root canal treatment. Tooth extraction may be required when a tooth is damaged or broken beyond repair. Dental treatments to align teeth/correct an improper bite are offered for children’s care, and may include metal braces or teeth aligner trays. Restoring your mouth’s health and appearance sometimes requires more invasive treatment. Oral surgery is any surgery performed on the teeth, mouth and/or jaw in order to relieve pain and restore proper function to these areas, while at the same time crafting an aesthetically pleasing smile. At our comfortable, state-of-the-art facility we offer oral surgery for a variety of conditions and disorders. Why Might You Need Oral Surgery? Oral surgery is used to treat the following conditions: Impacted teeth Jaw (TMJ) problems Mouth/teeth injuries Conditions requiring tooth extraction Oral cancer Bite problems (malocclusion) Endodontic diseases Types of Oral Surgery Procedures Tooth extraction. Tooth extraction, or removal, is often used when a tooth is impacted, decayed or damaged beyond repair. This type of oral surgery is usually recommended when a tooth cannot be fixed or restored via other types of dental treatments, such as a dental filling or root canal. Endodontic surgery. Endodontic surgery describes a series of treatments used to treat damaged dental pulp, root or the bone surrounding it. An endodontic surgical procedure may be needed if a root canal procedure isn’t able to effectively save your tooth. The most common type of endodontic surgery is an apicoectomy, which is a procedure that treats an infection from the root end of the tooth. Dental implant placement. Dental implants are oral appliances with a base that is surgically placed in the jaw, where it fuses with the bone to create a stable structure to which replacement teeth are later attached. Dental implants are an effective, durable solution for replacing one or more missing teeth, as they restore both function and an improved appearance to your mouth. Surgery to correct jaw/TMJ problems. Jaw problems, including those related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), are often caused by an irregular bite. Oral surgery is often used to correct a misaligned bite by reconstructing and realigning the teeth in the upper and lower jaws. Surgical treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). When other, non-surgical treatments aren’t successful, your doctor may recommend oral surgery. Surgical procedures used to treat sleep apnea include uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (a surgery that alters the soft palate to prevent airway obstruction), genioglossus advancement (a surgery that tightens the front tongue tendon to prevent the tongue from obstructing the breathing passage) and maxillomandibular advancement (a surgery that moves both jaws forward to open the airway). Are you avoiding dental care because going to the dentist makes you nervous? Take the anxiety out of visiting the dentist with sedation dentistry. Now you can relax in the dental chair, for a peaceful visit with our trusted dental professionals. In sedation dentistry, sedatives are used to relax the patient during his or her dental visit or procedure. Our practice uses a few different sedation methods, based on individual needs, to safely and effectively put the patient into a state of relaxation that will ensure their experience with us is stress-free. Are You a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry? Sedation dentistry is an ideal dentistry method for patients who have a: High level of anxiety or fear during their dental visit Fear of the dental drill, needles or other dentistry implements Low tolerance for pain Strong gag reflex Hard time sitting still during a dental procedure Dental procedure involving an extensive amount of work Types of Sedation During your dental visit with us, we have the option of the following sedation methods. One of our experienced dental professionals will select the appropriate method that suits your individual needs and one that is most effective for the type of dental work being performed. Oral Sedation Oral sedation is achieved through a sedative (in the form of a pill) taken by the patient some time before the dental procedure. This type of sedation provides relaxation while allowing the patient to be conscious during the dental procedure. Since oral sedation doesn’t provide pain relief, a local anesthetic is typically also used to numb the area or areas being treated. Patients who are prescribed oral sedation should arrange for a ride to and home from the dental office, as they will be too drowsy to drive afterwards. It takes about 24 hours for the full effects of oral sedation to wear off. Nitrous Oxide Sedation Nitrous oxide, also called “laughing gas,” is a form of sedation that the patient inhales through a rubber face mask. This sedation method puts the patient in a relaxed, though still conscious, state during their treatment. Nitrous oxide gives the patient a deep sense of relaxed well-being. To manage pain, a local anesthetic is typically used in conjunction with this sedation method. The effects of nitrous oxide are short-term, wearing off minutes after the rubber mask is removed, so that the patient can drive and perform normal daily activities when they leave our office. Intravenous (IV) Sedation Intravenous (IV) sedation is a safe and effective method that is administered via a needle into the patient’s veins (typically on their hand or inner elbow). The effect of IV sedation is rapid, as it is administered directly into the bloodstream, and puts the patient into a deep, untroubled sleep for the duration of the procedure. IV sedation does not provide pain relief, so a local anesthetic is also used during the procedure. Patients who plan to have IV sedation should arrange to have someone drive them home from our dental office, as the effects of the sedation will take approximately 24 hours to wear off. General Anesthesia General anesthesia is the method that achieves the deepest level of sedation, and so it is only used when extensive dental work is needed. A patient placed under general anesthesia (via medication that has been injected) will be unconscious during the entire procedure. This type of procedure requires that the patient be monitored for a short period of time after regaining consciousness. If you will be receiving general anesthesia you will also need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your treatment. We Specialize in Anxiety-Free Dentistry Now there’s no more reason to fear going to the dentist. Our dental professionals are trained in the safest and most effective sedation techniques, and can help you to achieve a level of comfort at the dentist that you may have never experienced before! They will educate you on the sedation method you have chosen and will carefully monitor you during treatment so that you can relax in both mind and body during your procedure. Call us to schedule an appointment and learn more about your sedation options.

Jaw pain, headaches and other symptoms associated with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are an unnecessary but all-too-common problem for thousands of people. TMJ-related symptoms can wreak havoc on a person’s life, making it difficult or uncomfortable to perform everyday functions like talking and chewing. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the temporal bones, located on each side of the head. Since these joints control the movement and function of the jaw, TMJ disorders can also affect the mouth and teeth and cause residual problems in these areas. Our team of experts can help you to find relief from pain and other limitations caused by TMJ disorder. Would You Benefit from TMJ Treatment? You may benefit from TMJ treatment if you experience the following common symptoms of a TMJ disorder: Jaw pain or feeling of stiffness in your jaw Jaw clicking, popping or grating sounds when opening your mouth Jaw locking or catching when opening your mouth Misaligned bite (when your teeth don’t meet up properly when you bite) Frequent headaches and/or neck aches Ringing in your ears or hearing problems Broken, worn or damaged teeth (due to bite problems) Swelling on the side of your face TMJ Treatments Available There are many possible causes of TMJ disorders, including bruxism (teeth grinding), stress (causing you to tighten or clench your jaw and teeth) and arthritis. For some patients, there is no known cause. Regardless of the cause, we offer a range of TMJ treatments for our patients, and can recommend the most effective treatment to suit each individual’s needs. Medication. Muscle relaxants, sedatives and other oral medications used to relax muscles and relieve pain may be prescribed, often in conjunction with other treatments. Injections. Trigger-point or Botox injections may be used to relax the jaw joints and facial muscles and relieve pain in the area. Mouth guards. These oral appliances are often recommended for patients who clench or grind their teeth, which is one of the causes of TMJ problems. These mouthpieces are made of medical-grade plastic and fit over the upper and lower teeth so that they don’t touch and are in a correct position to achieve a properly aligned bite. Depending on the patient’s needs, a splint (worn both day and night) or a night guard (worn only at night, during sleep) may be recommended. Dental work to fix bite problems. As TMJ and other jaw problems are often caused (or exacerbated) by a “bad bite” (where the upper and lower teeth aren’t properly aligned with the mouth closed), dental work may be recommended to restore a balanced bite. This may involve using orthodontic appliances or tooth restorations. Alternative therapies. A number of therapies are available that relieve pain and improve mobility in the jaw. These non-invasive therapies include transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), which uses low-level electrical currents on the jaw joints and facial muscles. Ultrasound therapy applies a deep heat therapy to the jaw area. Radio wave therapy and low-level laser therapies offer the same muscle-relaxing and pain relief effects, using radio waves and focused low-level laser light (respectively). Surgery. Typically only recommended when other treatment options have been exhausted, surgery that fixes the structural problems of the jaw is also an option. Get Personalized Care from Top-Rated TMJ Experts If you are experiencing jaw pain or any other symptoms related to a TMJ disorder, let our team of experts provide you with a thorough examination and then discuss your treatment options with you.
