Nitrous oxide is also called conscious sedation because it causes intense relaxation, but patients can continue to communicate with the doctor. Nitrous oxide is quick to act, and the effects subside quickly, so you can return to normal daily activities following the treatment. The use of nitrous oxide decreases sensitivity to pain and can be combined with local anesthetic, an injection that creates numbness at the site of treatment.
