The Optometrist was informative and noted that he would be referring me to a retina specialist due to an issue he noticed in the photos of my eyes. There was nothing unusual about the exam....pretty standard as far as eye exams go. I expected to owe about $45 (discussed during check-in) due to a test that wasn't covered by my vision insurance. I have experienced this before, so no issue. I didn't want to be dilated. When I am checking out, I owe $228 with the explanation that since there was a medical diagnosis, the insurance claim had to be filed with my medical insurance rather than my vision insurance. I questioned it because my vision insurance covers an annual eye exam 100% and this provider was in-network. Again, there was nothing about the exam itself that was unusual, only the discussion of needing a referral to a retina specialist. Since my medical insurance is a high-deductible plan, and I have not met my deductible, I had to pay the $228 out of pocket. I still do not understand why my appointment had to be billed under my medical insurance, but the staff was insistent that it did.
