For the past seven years, I’ve had my glasses made at Clarity Vision. This was my first time trying Target Optical. Some of my coworkers had gone to the Wake Forest location and had a very positive experience, so I decided to give Target Optical a try as well. I chose the Apex location simply because they had several appointments available, while Wake Forest didn’t have anything available for almost a month.
Unfortunately, this was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had at an optical store.
The eye exam itself was quick. The specialist was very friendly and pleasant, but the entire appointment lasted no more than about 15 minutes, and it did not feel like a thorough medical eye examination. But she did a good job after all.
The real problem came afterward, when I was choosing my frames and lenses. A young man helped me (Tamman was his name), and I sat down expecting him to ask what I wanted in my lenses—anti-reflective coating, scratch resistance, progressive lenses, warranty options, etc. Instead, he didn’t ask me about any of those things.
After sitting there for maybe five minutes, he simply told me that my glasses would cost almost $700, or nearly $500 with my insurance.
What happened next was extremely concerning. He was pressuring me to pay and did not seem to want me to take the time to review the order. I told him, “Wait, I want to review this first.” He clearly did not like that.
I then asked him to show me exactly how he had arrived at that price, since he had never asked me what options I wanted. I actually had to turn the screen toward myself and go through the order line by line because he had added multiple products, upgrades, and services without my knowledge or consent.
As I started questioning each item on the list, he became visibly nervous and started shaking. That was when I discovered that he had added several things I had never requested. He had even added an extended warranty without asking me.
I had to go through the entire order myself and tell him what I did and did not want. Once I had everything I had not requested removed, the final price came down to $345 with the discount.
I found this extremely disappointing and unacceptable. You should never add products, upgrades, or warranties to a customer’s purchase without clearly explaining them and getting the customer’s consent first. And you certainly should not pressure a customer to pay before they have had an opportunity to review what they are actually being charged for.
The experience left me feeling deceived and taken advantage of.
And then, to make matters worse, when I went to pick up my glasses, they handed them to me in a small fabric bag. There wasn’t even a protective eyeglass case. When I asked about it, I was told, “Armani doesn’t come with cases.”
Seriously? Glasses that cost hundreds of dollars, and you can’t provide a basic protective case that costs a few dollars? I ended up having to buy one myself on Amazon.
This was my first and last experience at Target Optical. I will not be returning to this location. Someone needs to teach this employee that you cannot simply add products and services to a customer’s order without their knowledge or consent, and then pressure them to pay without allowing them to review the charges.
The eye specialist was very nice, but the overall experience with the optical sales process was extremely disappointing. I expected much better from Target Optical.
