Dr. Hairston obtained her dermatology surgery training from The Mayo Clinic, specifically from Dr. Clark Otley who is now the chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Mayo as well as Dr. Pamela K. Phillips and Dr. Randall K. Roegnick, both of Mayo, and Dr. Tri Nguyen who is now at The University of Texas – Houston.
Dermatologists are skilled skin surgeons. Skin biopsies and surgical excisions are performed daily. Surgery may be required for a variety of benign and malignant lesions. The following is a summary of some of the types of skin surgery offered at The Dermatology Clinic:
Biopsy
Biopsies are performed to diagnosis lesions or skin conditions such as skin cancers. The area of skin is cleansed and local anesthesia is injected into the site. Most commonly Dr. Hairston uses a “shave” technique with a blade to obtain a small sample of the lesion. The biopsy is routinely sent to a dermatopathologist to determine the diagnosis of the lesion. No sutures are usually required for this procedure. You can typically expect results within 7-10 days.
Surgical Excision
Surgical excision is performed most commonly as a result from previous biopsy (i.e. skin cancer or abnormal mole) or for removal of a benign lesion such as a cyst. The excisions are performed in a sterile field. After the anesthesia is injected locally, the area of skin is cleansed and sterilized in preparation for the procedure. Stitches are typically used with removal of them in 7-14 days. As with biopsies, the tissue is sent to a dermatopathologist to confirm the diagnosis.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy diseased lesions of the skin. It is most commonly used to treat precancers and warts but may be used on a variety of skin lesions. Redness, swelling and blisters are common and expected after treatment.
Electrocautery
Electrocautery is a technique where Dr. Hairston uses local anesthetic cream which is applied to individual benign lesions which a patient wishes to have removed. Common removals include dilated facial blood vessels, facial oil glands, flat warts, and keratosis growths. A fine tipped needle with low level of electric current is used to dessicate the individual lesions. Dr. Hairston has had great success with this easy method of removing small lesions.
Photodynamic Blu-U® Light Therapy
Photodynamic Blu-U® light therapy is used for treatment of precancerous conditions such as actinic keratosis, actinically damaged skin, sun damaged skin and moderate to cystic acne. The treatment involves the application of Levulan® and high-intensity narrow-band blue light. This therapy may take a series of treatment for optimal results .
Botox® for Axillary Hyperhidrosis
For persons who struggle with excessive perspiration, Botox® is FDA approved for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis that is inadequately managed with topical agents. Dr. Hairston performs the treatment after first numbing with underarms with an anesthetic cream. Results typically last 9 months. This procedure is covered under many insurance plans.
