Breast

Breast augmentation is a very common procedure, with its purpose being to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast, giving a more youthful appearance. Breast implants come in numerous sizes and shapes, and several options for incision placement and implant location are available. The final choice for Breast Implants depends on your particular body shape and your overall aesthetic goals and desires. A breast lift is sometimes performed in conjunction with an augmentation. It is important to discuss your expectations openly. The doctors will explain the pros and cons of these options to you, allowing you to be comfortable in your decision. The predominant risks of breast implant surgery include the possibility of bleeding or infection as well as asymmetry, changes in nipple/areolar sensation, capsular contracture or hardening, deflation of the implant, and the need for revision surgery. The implant is guaranteed for life and should it deflate, the manufacturer will replace the implant for you. With a recent FDA approval, both saline and silicone gel implants are now available for cosmetic breast augmentation. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure usually takes about an hour. You will be placed in a surgical bra and will be able to shower the next day. You should avoid strenuous activity, lifting, pushing, or pulling for the next 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients will be able to return to work in a few days with light duty only. If you get in the tanning bed you should keep your incisions covered for the first 4 to 6 months. Frequently Asked Questions: Who are candidates for Breast Augmentations? Any healthy individual over the age of 18 that wishes to have fuller more shapely breasts is a good candidate for a breast augmentation. Because we have multiple implant choices with regard to size and shape, we can customize an individual approach to help you achieve your desired result. What is the recovery from a Breast Augmentation? Following a breast augmentation, you can expect to feel tightness and pressure on your chest. Muscle relaxers and pain medication are prescribed to minimize discomfort. The implants typically appear too high and a little too big right after surgery. Over time, which can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months, the muscles and skin will relax and the implants will settle into position. What are the risks of Breast Augmentation? As with any operation, there are risks such as bleeding or infection. More specific to implants are the risks of an implant leak, capsular contracture, or palpable or visible rippling. Changes in breast sensation can happen but are very uncommon. Breast implant associated lymphoma is a very rare and highly treatable type of lymphoma. It is known to be more associated with textured implants. Here at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg we use smooth implants. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons now recognizes approximately 303 both suspected and confirmed cases in the United States and a total of 871 worldwide as of December 6, 2019. You may read more about this rare risk at the following link. Will someone know that I had a Breast Augmentation? The likelihood of someone knowing you had a breast augmentation will depend mainly on what you wear and how large an implant you choose. A breast augmentation will accentuate your natural breast shape. If you have more skin and breast tissue to begin with, you will typically have a more natural shape after surgery when compared to someone with very little skin and breast tissue. Those with little skin or breast tissue will have much more of a high, rounded, implanted look. How does a Breast Augmentation feel? Following a breast augmentation, your breasts will typically feel a little bit firmer than before surgery. Silicone gel implants have a softer more natural feel when compared to saline-filled implants.

Breast lift surgery is very common. As a woman ages, the effects of gravity and/or childbearing cause the breasts to sag and lose volume. The main factor in determining the need for a lift is the location of the nipple relative to the lower breast crease. If the nipple position is below the lower breast crease, then a lift is necessary to obtain the best breast shape. Even though breast tissue is not removed with a lift, a small implant is often necessary to achieve the most optimal result. If you still desire to have children, then it is probably best to wait on surgery as the skin will simply stretch out again. If a small lift is needed, an incision only around the areola (pigmented skin) is possible. For the majority of patients, however, an incision extends around the areola, down to the lower breast crease, and occasionally, if needed, for a short distance in that crease. The procedure will also reduce the size of the areola, which has typically stretched out over time. A breast lift is typically performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. After surgery your breasts will be wrapped with a compressive bandage and you will return to the doctor’s office the following day and checked. You will be placed in a sports bra at that time and can shower that evening. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for the next 4 to 6 weeks.

Some women are faced with the difficult situation of needing to have one or both breasts removed, either from cancer or from having a high risk of cancer. Fortunately, many options are available today to reconstruct a new breast. One of the options includes using a patients’ own tissues from either the back or stomach area and moving it to rebuild the breast. Another option is placing a temporary implant and slowly filling the implant over a period of weeks to stretch the muscle and skin. Once the desired size is reached we can replacing it with a more permanent implant. These procedures can be done immediately following removal of the breast or can be done at a later time. We go over these options in detail with you during your initial visit. Together we decide on which option is best for you. You can expect to stay in the hospital several days, and there will be a drain in place to remove any excess fluid. Recovery really depends on what type of procedure is chosen. The reconstructions that require moving tissue from other areas of the body to rebuild the breast are much more time-consuming and have a longer recovery time than using a temporary implant. Once at home you will need to limit your activity and will require someone being with you for assistance. As with any operation follow-up is very important. We will need to watch very closely for any problems. If the option of a temporary implant is chosen, we would need to see you back every few weeks to slowly fill the implant to the desired size. Once the breast reconstruction is complete, a new nipple can be created. Every woman wants to look and feel normal. Breast reconstruction offers you the opportunity to regain your self-confidence and feel good about yourself.

Many women suffer from overly large breasts, which can cause back, shoulder, and neck pain. The most common age range for a breast reduction is around 20 to 40 years old, but it can be performed essentially at any age. The majority of breast growth occurs around puberty, so it is not uncommon to need the procedure as a teenager. Since the procedure is performed for medical reasons, it is normally covered by health insurance plans. The operation is done under general anesthesia, often on an outpatient basis, and usually takes 2 to 3 hours. The incisions typically extend around the areola (the pigmented skin) and down to and along the lower breast crease. Once the excess breast tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a normal location. The breasts are wrapped for 24 hours after surgery to limit swelling and discomfort. Following this, a sports bra should be worn at all times for the next month and strenuous activity limited. There are typically no sutures to be removed. The main tradeoff for reducing the breasts and improving discomfort is the scars. While it can take some time for the scars to fade, most women are very pleased and notice almost immediate relief from their discomfort.

Face

Due to aging, environmental factors, and the overall effects of gravity, facial tissues tend to lose their elasticity, and deep creases begin to form. This is most obvious with sagging in the jowls and neckline. A facelift operation is designed to remove this excess skin. The best candidates are healthy individuals most commonly in the 40 to 60 year old range, though older patients can also benefit from the operation. While a facelift does not stop the aging process, it can “set back the clock” a number of years. A facelift can make you look younger and fresher, allowing you to feel good about yourself. The effects of a facelift are lasting. Years later you will continue to look better than if you had never had a facelift at all. The operation is typically done under general anesthesia and takes an average of 3 to 4 hours. Incisions are inconspicuously placed in the hairline and in front of and behind the ear. The loose skin is separated from the underlying tissues which are then tightened. The excess skin is redraped into position and removed. A facelift is often done in combination with a forehead lift and/or eyelid surgery. Following surgery you can expect your face to feel tight and numb with some bruising and swelling. You will feel uncomfortable but pain is usually minimal. A large gauze bandage is placed on the face and is changed the following day. If help is available you may go home, but if not you may stay overnight in the hospital. We will begin removing your stitches 5 to 6 days after surgery. Your activity will be limited for several weeks.

Prominent ears are a source of great anxiety for children who are often ridiculed by their classmates. If treated early enough, a lot of this unnecessary harassment can be avoided. The best time to perform the procedure is around 6 to 7 years old when the child is able to cooperate with their postoperative care. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. An Otoplasty is designed to reposition the ears creating a more normal appearance. Incisions are placed behind the ears keeping scars very inconspicuous. Permanent sutures are used to reshape the cartilage. A circumferential head wrap is placed following surgery and remains in place for one week. Afterwards, a headband is worn to protect the ears from trauma while they heal.

As with other areas of the face and body, the aging process and environmental factors work against you creating unwanted wrinkles and loose skin. Oftentimes this is quite noticeable in the forehead region, particularly with drooping eyebrows. Temporary solutions to some of these problems in the forehead are available in the form of Botox, which is used to paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkling. Some patients, however, either prefer more long-lasting treatment or their needs simply can’t be met with Botox alone. The best candidates will have some drooping of the eyebrows creating a sad or angry appearance. Oftentimes it is done in conjunction with either a facelift or eyelid surgery. A forehead lift can minimize the wrinkling and elevate the eyebrows creating a more alert, youthful appearance. Incisions are commonly placed across the top of the head or just in front of the hairline. The loose skin is separated from the underlying tissues and the muscles that cause the wrinkling between the eyebrows are disrupted. The skin is redraped into position and the excess skin is removed. This effectively decreases the wrinkles, eliminates some of the muscles that cause wrinkling, and aesthetically repositions the eyebrows. The operation is typically done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. A dressing is applied around the entire head and will be changed the following day. You can expect some bruising and swelling in addition to mild discomfort. Results are long lasting and the procedure rarely needs to be repeated.

What is Lip Augmentation? Lip augmentation is for those who wish to increase the fullness of their lips. It can be particularly effective for those who have lost volume in their lips over time. Filling in the lost volume can also help with those bothersome lines around the mouth. What are some lip fillers? Several options are available including Restylane, Collagen, and Alloderm. Both Restylane and Collagen are injectables. These are the better options for those who prefer a more short-term fix. Alloderm, on the other hand, is a freeze-dried piece of dermis that is actually pulled through the lip using very small cuts inside the edge of the lip. Recovery is a little longer but the great advantage of this is that it can last for years. Schedule a Consultation Today! If you’re interested in learning more about lip augmentation please contact us for a consultation with Dr. Reno or Dr. Talbot at (601) 296-3405 or fill out our contact us form here. We will discuss your needs and concerns, and determine your best course of action.

A rhinoplasty is surgery to change the size or shape of the nose to improve its appearance. It is sometimes combined with other procedures to improve breathing. A rhinoplasty is occasionally combined with a chin implant. A small chin can make the face look disproportionate and exaggerate the size of the nose. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are those who are looking for improvement and not perfection. At The Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg, computer imaging is available to give you an idea of what can be accomplished. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Most are performed using an open approach, which requires a small incision at the base of the nose. The rest of the incisions are inside the nostrils. You can expect to be bruised and swollen after surgery, particularly around the eyes and nose. A splint will be on the outside of your nose and gauze packing will be on the inside. The splint will need to remain in place for approximately 1 week. The packing is usually removed in a few days. While most of the nasal swelling will be gone in the first few months, swelling in the tip of the nose can be present for up to one year, though it is rarely noticeable

Body

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck will have some excess skin and fat in the mid to lower abdominal region. Additionally, the abdominal muscles may have stretched and separated over time, particularly in women following childbirth. A tummy tuck is designed to remove this excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal region while at the same time tightening the abdominal muscles. The incision goes around the naval as well as just above the pubic hairline and extends along the bikini line. No sutures need to be removed as they are placed underneath the skin. A plastic tube drain is placed at the time of surgery to remove any excess fluid. It commonly remains for one to two weeks after surgery. Your abdomen will feel tight and numb following surgery, and this will improve with time. Oral pain medication will be provided, and this is usually all that is required. To limit discomfort you will need to rest in a recliner or sleep on 2 to 4 pillows for several days. We encourage you to walk around with assistance as this prevents blood clots in the legs. A mild laxative is usually needed to avoid bloating and constipation. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes two to three hours. Most patients are watched in the hospital overnight and go home the following day, but you can go home as long as you have help available. An abdominal binder will need to be worn after surgery. This will give support to aid in pain control and help limit swelling and fluid accumulation. Don’t expect to regain full activity for approximately six weeks after surgery. If you are considering this procedure, it is best to avoid smoking as it can compromise your results. “Mini” Abdominoplasty The difference between the traditional tummy tuck and the “mini” tummy tuck is that in the mini tummy tuck an incision is not placed around the naval and the naval is not repositioned, which limits the amount of skin and fat that can be removed. The mini tummy tuck is usually combined with liposuction to the abdominal region. The best candidate is someone who only wants the little “pouch” of tissue just above the pubic hairline removed. Frequently Asked Questions: Who are candidates for a Tummy Tuck? A tummy tuck is best for someone with loose skin of the abdominal region. While diet and exercise can help maintain your ideal weight, they will not tighten the skin. A tummy tuck is designed remove that extra lower abdominal skin and fat. The stomach muscles are often tightened at the same time to create a flatter profile. Recovery from a Tummy Tuck: You can expect your abdominal area to feel tight and sore after surgery. While light activity can be resumed fairly quickly, it will take approximately 4-6 weeks before you will be able to resume full activity. What are the risks of a Tummy Tuck? As with any operation there is a risk of bleeding or infection. With a tummy tuck you can expect to have some numbness in the lower abdomen, particularly between the belly button and the lower incision. A drain is commonly placed to remove fluid that can build up under the skin after surgery. More severe complications such as a wound healing issue or a blood clot are much less common. Are there any alternatives to getting a Tummy Tuck? Liposuction can be done to remove some excess fat but will not tighten skin. Liposuction in combination with Bodytite radiofrequency treatments can create some tightening of the skin, though it will not be as effective as a tummy tuck.

The body lift for massive weight loss is part of a general area in plastic surgery called body contouring. It is very important to evaluate if you are a candidate for the operation or whether a tummy tuck, liposuction, thigh lift, or other procedure is the right one for you. We have had much success with the body lift, but it is vital to understand the operation and to determine if it is right for you. The body lift is an integrated operation to remove large amounts of skin and fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, and back. This is an operation designed mainly for men or women who have lost large amounts of weight and are left with saggy and unsightly skin of the abdomen, buttock, thighs, and hips. Following surgery, one can expect to stay in the hospital for 1-2 days. Sometimes breasts and arms can be combined with the lower body lift, but most often these areas are addressed at a separate operation.

Buttock Implants or Gluteal Implants are designed to improve the contour of the buttocks. These implants are made of solid silicone, which unlike breast implants, will not break and leak. The implants can be placed either in the muscle itself or underneath the muscle fascia. Dr. Reno prefers to place the implants underneath the muscle fascia. They are placed through an incision between the buttocks in the midline. Through this incision a pocket is made on top of the muscle for the implant. The implant is positioned to mainly enlarge the upper buttock and the upper portion of the mid buttock. Liposuction of the hip region is often combined with Buttock Implants to achieve the best contour. Some prefer to enlarge the buttock area with Fat Injections as well. You will need to be very careful for the first 3 to 4 weeks following surgery. Expect to wear a compression garment and avoid sitting except to go to the restroom. It will take several months for the swelling to go down. The ideal candidate for Buttock Implant surgery is someone with a normal weight and good buttock skin tone.

Liposuction or Liposculpture is consistently one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. It does not remove excess skin nor is it a weight loss procedure, but rather liposuction is used to improve the appearance of *certain problem areas. The best candidates are those who have reached their goals in terms of *weight loss through diet and exercise yet still have areas of fat that just won’t go away. The most common areas of concern are the chin, abdomen and waist, and inner and outer thighs. Liposuction is usually done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis and typically takes an hour depending on how many areas need to be done. Small incisions are placed in the natural folds of skin near the area to be treated. A special solution is infused throughout the fat to facilitate removal and limit bleeding. Different sized cannulas (long hollow tubes) are used to suction out the fat, making multiple passes through the tissue in different directions to achieve the best result. A compression bandage will be placed following surgery and should be worn at all times for the next 4 to 6 weeks, except to shower. Laser Liposuction is also offered by the Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg. With laser liposuction a small laser fiber is inserted under the skin to break up the fat. Because the tip of the laser generates heat, it is then used to tighten the skin from underneath. A traditional small liposuction cannula is then used to remove excess fat. * Because fat is not very dense, it is unlikely that you will notice much difference in terms of your weight. *More commonly, you will notice a change in the way your clothes fit. *Results can vary from patient to patient and there is no guarantee of specific results. Frequently Asked Questions: How soon will I see results from Liposuction? Following liposuction, improvements in the contours of the treated areas will be seen almost immediately. It will take some time for the swelling to go away before the final results can be appreciated. What are the risks of Liposuction? As with any operation there are risks such as bleeding or infection. Temporary changes in the sensation of the treated areas is expected. The skin may loosen some, particularly if there are stretch marks in the area. Every effort is made to minimize the likelihood of an irregularity of the contour of the skin. More serious complications such as a blood clot are less likely. Do I need sedation for Liposuction? For a small area, liposuction may be done under local anesthesia. For larger areas, sedation or general anesthesia provides the most comfortable experience. What is the recovery from Liposuction? Following liposuction we recommend wearing some compression garments over the treated areas. You can expect some initial swelling and tenderness that will gradually resolve. Light activities of daily living are encouraged. We prefer that you avoid strenuous activity for approximately 4-6 weeks.

Easily remove unattractive spider veins. You see them just below the surface of your skin – unsightly areas of purple, red and blue lines that look like urban roadmaps. Spider veins are common, affecting nearly fifty percent of men and women over 50 years of age, and are most prevalent on thighs and lower legs. Unlike varicose veins that are large, ropy and sometimes painful, spider veins are small and easily treated. During your initial confidential consultation, we will discuss the various treatment methods and recommend one or more options. Small spider veins are typically treated using laser technology. If the area of veining is extensive or if the veins are larger, laser treatments combined with sclerosing solution injections will prove most effective and will likely require more than one appointment. Anesthesia is not required for either procedure and there is little to no pain or disability. There may be some bruising, but you will likely be able to return to your daily activities immediately. One of Mississippi’s Top Spider Vein Removal Surgeons Dr. Paul Talbot, the current Medical Director at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg, is well known throughout Mississippi and the surrounding areas as one of the top spider vein removal surgeons. Dr. Talbot has already performed spider vein removal procedures on patients from many of the surrounding areas, such as Biloxi, Thomasville, Gulfport, and Mobile. How Much Does Spider Vein Removal Cost? Every spider vein procedure is unique. Therefore, the cost of spider vein removal is different for each patient, and depends on the extent of the procedure. The Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg offers financing options to assist you with the cost of your spider vein removal procedure.
