Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Free consultation

Unlike humans from centuries ago, people today no longer need their wisdom teeth for chewing their food. Instead, these teeth can become impacted and negatively impact your oral health. As a result, approximately ten million wisdom teeth are extracted each year. Many people come to Centre for Smile Design for wisdom tooth removal because there isn’t enough space for the teeth to grow correctly. However, we recommend wisdom tooth extraction to prevent future oral health problems even if you aren’t currently experiencing any discomfort. Dr. John Hopkins, DDS, can perform a wisdom tooth extraction to help you maintain your smile and protect your long-term oral health. What Are Wisdom Teeth? Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Gulfport, MS - John Hopkins, DDSWisdom teeth are the last set of molars in your mouth. They are formally known as the third molars but referred to as your wisdom teeth because they erupt during your late teens or early adult years when you have gained more wisdom. These teeth were a crucial part of the body for early humans, who primarily ate raw meat, roots, nuts, and leaves that required grinding and crushing for digestion. These teeth have become unnecessary since we can now cook foods to make them softer. Many people have impacted wisdom teeth, meaning there isn’t enough room for them to develop normally. These teeth can partially erupt or not at all. The Trouble with Impacted Wisdom Teeth You should have a wisdom tooth extraction if yours are impacted. Otherwise, you can experience many oral health problems, like: Trouble flossing Overcrowded teeth Infection Tooth decay Cavities Gum disease Swollen gums Potential damage to the surrounding nerves and jawbone Cysts Complications during orthodontic treatment Because wisdom teeth are located far back in the mouth, they are challenging to clean. Food can quickly become trapped in these areas.

Tooth Extractions

There are an average of 10 million wisdom tooth extractions each year in the United States. Many people assume that these are the only types of extractions dentists perform, but that is not the case. A tooth extraction can be necessary for many reasons, such as advanced tooth decay. Removing a decayed tooth can be a key step in regaining your quality of life when you are suffering from dental issues. At Centre for Smile Designs, John Hopkins, DDS, provides expert tooth extraction along with a range of options for replacing an extracted tooth — often within the same appointment. What Is a Tooth Extraction? Tooth Extraction in Gulfport, MS Teeth Pulled John Hopkins, DDSA tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth from its socket. Although the goal of dental care is to preserve as many natural teeth as possible, there are instances when a tooth extraction is necessary. Dr. Hopkins may recommend a tooth extraction if you have: Severe tooth decay Severe gum disease A fractured tooth An impacted tooth Crowded teeth Dental injuries There are two main types of tooth extraction procedures: simple (non-surgical) and surgical. A non-surgical tooth extraction is an appropriate option for teeth that are visible. During this procedure, Dr. Hopkins can grip the tooth with specialized tools that help loosen it. For this procedure, most patients only need local anesthesia. A surgical tooth extraction is the right choice for teeth that have not fully erupted or that are so damaged that there is nothing left above the gumline. It can also be a necessary procedure if you have teeth with long or curved roots. With a surgical tooth extraction, Dr. Hopkins makes careful incisions into your gums. Replacing the Tooth Once Dr. Hopkins has removed the tooth, it is essential to consider the next steps. The best option is often to replace the tooth with mini implants. Mini dental implants are titanium posts that fit into your gums and jawbone and on which a false tooth sits. Unlike standard dental implants, mini options do not require an extra piece — the abutment — making them easier and quicker to install. Benefits of Mini Dental Implants One of the benefits of a mini dental implant after a tooth extraction is that it can help you avoid jawbone loss. Your jawbone depends on the roots of your teeth to stimulate the creation of new bone cells that replace the ones that regularly die. When you have a tooth extraction, you remove the entire tooth, including the root. Your jawbone no longer receives the stimulation it needs, and this leads to bone loss. Over time, jawbone loss can affect not only how your jaw looks, but also the health of other teeth. A mini dental implant functions like a tooth root, so it can help you avoid this problem. Mini dental implants also do not require as much bone density for Dr. Hopkins to fit them in place. With standard dental implants, a bone grafting procedure is frequently necessary, which can take much more time and increase costs. By choosing a mini dental implant, you can get same-day treatment in many cases, allowing you to get the tooth extraction and the mini dental implant at the same time. The Tooth Extraction Procedure If you experience pain or other signs that can point to the necessity of a tooth extraction, then it’s time to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hopkins at Centre for Smile Designs. During the consultation, he will assess the treatment area and take X-rays using a state-of-the-art CBCT machine. Using these images, he will be able to decide on the right treatment option, including what kind of tooth extraction procedure can best suit your needs and whether you have already had some bone loss.

Not everyone has to lose teeth as they age. Maintaining good oral hygiene and routine dental care increases your chances of keeping your natural teeth. Unfortunately, some people develop a bacterial infection called periodontal disease, which can be managed with proper treatment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this condition affects approximately 19% of the world’s population. If you are one of the millions needing periodontal treatment, contact Dr. John Hopkins at Centre for Smile Designs. Not only does our office treat gum disease, but we provide services to maintain the health of your entire family. What Is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal Treatment in Gulfport, MS John Hopkins, DDSPeriodontal or gum disease is an infection around the gum and supporting tissues. It develops due to poor hygiene habits that leave plaque on the teeth and gums. This sticky substance contains saliva, food particles, and bacteria. When plaque lingers on your teeth too long, it hardens and becomes calculus, causing gum inflammation. Eventually, it progresses to periodontal disease. When you delay periodontal treatment, the number of bacteria continues to grow and can travel through your body via your bloodstream, affecting other systems and organs. Patients with advanced periodontal disease have a higher risk of developing heart disease. What Causes Periodontal Disease? It’s easy to understand that your mouth is filled with bacteria. An oral hygiene routine, like brushing twice and flossing once daily, eliminates toxins from your mouth. Routine dental visits at Centre for Smile Designs allow your oral health to be evaluated, and we will promptly schedule periodontal treatment if necessary. Regularly skipping brushing or flossing increases bacteria growth, contributing to periodontal disease. Poor oral hygiene is a leading cause of gum disease, but other factors contribute. Those factors are: Poor oral hygiene Tobacco use Medications Poor nutrition Family history of periodontal disease Constant clenching and grinding of your teeth Health conditions like diabetes, asthma, kidney or heart problems Hormonal changes due to puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy also contribute to the development of periodontal disease. Signs You Need Periodontal Treatment Periodontal disease has a reputation for being silent. It might not cause you pain until it reaches the advanced stages. But there are noticeable signs and symptoms that you have this oral infection. Those signs are: Red, swollen, itchy, or sore gums Gum recession Sensitive teeth Bleeding when you brush your teeth Chronic bad breath Pain when chewing Loose teeth Pus when you press down on the gums If any of these signs sound familiar, you are affected by this disease and require periodontal treatment.

Full & Partial Dentures

Is there something missing in your smile? You’re not alone — about 40 million Americans are missing all of their teeth. Living with missing teeth can affect the way you speak and eat and lower your overall quality of life. But solutions are available! Dentures in Gulfport, MS Snap-On Denture John Hopkins, DDSTo help you regain the full use of your bite, John Hopkins, DDS, at Centre for Smile Designs recommends dentures. Learn more about the many options you have. What Are Dentures? Dentures are removable or fixed oral appliances that replace missing teeth. There are many types of dentures, including: Full dentures Partial dentures Overdentures Full dentures can replace an entire arch of teeth. These dentures sit on top of your gums, relying on the roof of your mouth (palate) or your jawbone ridge for support. To keep full dentures in place, you may need to use denture adhesive. Partial dentures can help people who still have some natural teeth. These dentures are removable but provide more stability because they attach to your teeth. They still rely on your gums or jawbone bridge for support. Overdentures — the latest option for people who need dentures — are the most stable solution. They use mini dental implants to stay firmly in place. These implants are small titanium posts that are fixed into your jawbone and gums. Overdentures attach to the implants but can be removed at night. When you get a new denture, it fits firmly in your mouth. As time passes, however, you may notice that the device gets looser. This can occur because your gums have changed. A denture reline can allow Dr. Hopkins to refit the device to your gums. Another option available at Centre for Smile Designs is a soft reline. If you have sores or tender gums, you may not be able to wear regular dentures. Dr. Hopkins can reline the denture with a pliable material that does not put pressure on the gums. You can also get a temporary reline. If you have inflammation in your gums, getting an accurate impression to create soft or hard relines can be difficult. A temporary reline is medicated, allowing your gums to heal while still improving the fit of your current dentures. How Mini Dental Implants Help Mini dental implants are titanium posts that are affixed to your jawbone. A false tooth sits on the implant, and overdentures snap onto the false tooth. Mini dental implants make your dentures more stable — the dentures do not slip or move at all when you smile, eat, or speak. When you choose dentures retained by mini dental implants, you have access to the full force of your bite again. With traditional dentures, you can’t chew as you naturally would, but with overdentures, you will have the strength of your jaw behind each bite. This allows you to eat a variety of foods that traditional dentures could not handle. Mini dental implants can also help prevent some jawbone loss. Your jawbone relies on the stimulation of the roots of your teeth to create new bone cells. When your teeth are gone, that stimulation is no longer there, and bone loss occurs as a result. Mini dental implants function as tooth roots that help keep your jawbone strong. Finally, dentures that use mini dental implants can save you the hassle of using adhesives. And because these newer denture options do not rely on your gums to stay in place, you have less risk of developing sores on your gums.

Tooth Colored Fillings

If you ask patients over 50 about their dental fillings, they’ll likely tell you about the shiny silver metal placed in their teeth. However, over the decades, advanced dental materials that closely resemble natural tooth colors have become standard practice in many dental offices worldwide. Dental Fillings in Gulfport, MSSilver fillings are still an effective American Dental Association–approved decayed tooth repair method — in fact, silver fillings have been used to treat cavities for more than 150 years. But in recent years, dental offices, including the Centre for Smile Designs, have moved away from these materials and replaced them with a more aesthetically pleasing option: composite fillings. Dr. John Hopkins, DDS, only uses tooth-colored fillings to repair decay, cracks, or fractures in your teeth for a natural, beautiful result. What Are Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings? Dental fillings are used to restore function and shape to teeth that have been damaged by decay. Dr. Hopkins exclusively uses composite — tooth-colored — fillings to treat affected teeth. Only a single visit is needed to complete the procedure, and you will be numbed using a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort you experience. Composite fillings are made from resin-based materials and match your natural tooth color, making them ideal for cosmetic results. After Dr. Hopkins removes the decay, he bonds the material of these dental fillings to the remaining healthy tooth structure. Silver vs. Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings Metal and tooth-colored fillings share many similarities and are suitable for repairing cavities. Silver materials are more durable than composite fillings and generally more cost-effective. However, composite fillings are also affordable and can effectively handle the pressure from biting, chewing, and normal wear and tear. Advantages of Composite Dental Fillings Tooth-colored materials provide a safe and effective method for treating tooth decay. Composite dental fillings come with a range of benefits: Mercury-Free Unlike silver fillings, tooth-colored materials do not contain mercury or other metals. They are made from resin and a powdered glass filler. Many patients are concerned with mercury-containing materials’ effects on their health, so composite is a safe alternative. More Natural Tooth Structure Retained When white fillings are used, less natural tooth structure is removed compared to a silver filling. These materials bond directly with the tooth, so Dr. Hopkins only removes a small portion of the healthy tooth. Resistance to Temperature Change Composite materials are less sensitive to thermal changes, making them less likely to expand and contract. Because they are temperature-resistant, your tooth enamel remains intact, limiting the potential for toothaches and broken teeth. Quick Treatment Under normal circumstances, composite dental fillings are a quick and pain-free procedure. The entire process, from numbing to hardening the material, takes approximately one hour. Increased Support White dental fillings use a technique that micro-mechanically bonds the material to the healthy tooth structure. This technique provides additional support that maximizes the strength of the filling.

One in four adults between the ages of 18 and 64 in the United States has at least one cavity. Cavities can quickly cause severe decay that puts your oral and general health at risk. To help prevent the loss of the tooth and other complications, Dr. John Hopkins, DDS, offers root canal therapy at Centre for Smile Designs. Learn more about what root canal therapy is and how to know if you might need it. What Is Root Canal Therapy? Root Canal Therapy in Gulfport, MS John Hopkins, DDSRoot canal therapy is a dental procedure that removes a tooth’s infected pulp, relieving the pain that an abscessed or infected tooth can cause. The tooth then receives a filling and a crown to protect it from further infections. A root canal is necessary when bacteria finds its way into the tooth. This can occur if you have left a cavity untreated for a long time or if your tooth has suffered trauma. Some of the most common signs that you may need root canal therapy include: Tooth pain that doesn’t go away Swollen gums Swollen jaw Tooth sensitivity to heat and cold Tooth discoloration Pimple on the gums Chipped and cracked tooth Loose tooth Pain when applying pressure After the root canal, the tooth will receive a crown to protect it. Dr. Hopkins’ goal is always to save the tooth, but if the infection is very advanced or there is not enough tooth left for a crown, another option can be to extract the tooth and place a post and cap (dental implant). Using mini dental implants, which are titanium posts that go into your jawbone and gums, you can get a false tooth in place without risking the kind of bone loss that can occur when there is no root to stimulate the jawbone. Benefits of Root Canal Therapy A root canal can help relieve the pain that the infected tooth pulp causes. The relief is immediate. Root canal therapy can also allow you to keep the tooth root in place. Your jawbone receives stimulation from the roots of your teeth, leading it to create bone cells that replace the ones that die naturally. If a root is missing, as can occur if you have a tooth extraction, that area of your jawbone doesn’t receive the stimulation it needs. This causes bone loss. Keeping the root in place prevents this problem. Additionally, the infected pulp contains an accumulation of bacteria that can damage your gums, jaw, and other teeth. Root canal therapy can prevent the spread of bacteria. Root canal therapy is a quick procedure. Dr. Hopkins can perform it in one appointment.

When a dental emergency affects you or your family, you need treatment as soon as possible to ensure the best long-term outcome and avoid unnecessary complications. Dr. John Hopkins, DDS, is your emergency dentist in Gulfport, MS, at Centre for Smile Designs. Emergency Dentistry When You Need It Emergency Dentist in Gulfport, MS John Hopkins, DDSIdeally, dental care takes place after careful evaluation and treatment planning. However, there’s simply no way that families can plan for every dental emergency. At Centre for Smile Designs, we understand the need for emergency dentistry and schedule our practice accordingly. In any case, calling us now to find out the next steps is your best course of action. When to Call an Emergency Dentist Sometimes, the line between requiring urgent care today and needing to schedule a later appointment isn’t clear. In general, it’s best to err on the side of caution and let our experienced team make that decision. There are many different scenarios when you or your family might need an emergency dentist. A sudden onset of severe toothache is a reason to call an emergency dentist. This could be due to unseen decay, damage, or infection that has suddenly reached a critical point. If you have a sudden toothache, you should call Centre for Smile Designs right away. This is true even if the pain stops, as this could be due to nerve tissue damage. Physical damage to teeth is another reason to call an emergency dentist. If an accident or other trauma has chipped, cracked, or knocked out a tooth, you should call right away. Make sure to hold onto any lost teeth or fragments, and contact us for further instructions. If you’ve lost a tooth in a serious accident, you should visit urgent care before visiting an emergency dentist — you may have a head, neck, or other injury that needs to be treated first. We’ll do everything we can to ensure that you are comfortable in the meantime and to prevent any further damage to your teeth. Root Canal Therapy Your teeth are protected by enamel and dentin, but underneath these outer layers are pulp and nerve tissue. This tissue is vulnerable to infection if it becomes exposed. If you have sudden onset tooth pain, you could be in need of root canal therapy. This procedure removes the nerve and pulp tissue, eliminating the risk of infection. It makes it possible to keep the natural tooth while preventing long-term issues. If you are already showing signs of serious infection, such as fever and facial swelling, you should visit an emergency room for immediate treatment.

Dental Bonding
Dental Bonding

More than one-third of all Americans are unhappy with their smiles. While for some the displeasure occurs because of crooked teeth, for others the problem comes down to chipped or cracked teeth. To help you perfect your smile and prevent tooth decay from arising in untreated cracks, John Hopkins, DDS, at Centre for Smile Designs offers dental bonding. What Is Dental Bonding? Dental Bonding in Gulfport, MSDental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that uses tooth-colored resin to fix tooth imperfections. The resin material can change the shape, size, or color of the treated tooth. Dental bonding is a good option if you need to: Conceal cracks and chips in your teeth Hide tooth discoloration Change the shape of your teeth Hide gaps between your teeth The resin material that Dr. Hopkins uses for dental bonding is the same that he uses for filling cavities and protecting roots that are exposed because of gum recession. Benefits of Dental Bonding Dental bonding is a quick procedure. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth, making it much faster than other options like veneers or crowns. Dental bonding is also less expensive. If you worry about being able to afford treatment, or if you have many teeth in need of repair, bonding can provide better cost-effectiveness than veneers. Another benefit of dental bonding is that it helps with tooth discoloration. If you have one or more teeth that have stains or are completely discolored, Dr. Hopkins offers the chance to get the exact color you want. Resin comes in various hues, so he can always find the one that matches your healthy teeth. Dental bonding is also less invasive than veneers and crowns. With dental crowns, Dr. Hopkins has to remove a significant amount of enamel to allow the crown to comfortably fit into place. Although veneers require less enamel removal, some enamel must still be taken. On the other hand, for the majority of people, dental bonding does not require any enamel removal. The results of dental bonding are natural and comfortable. Many people turn to metal crowns when they have trouble affording ceramic ones, but metal crowns are clearly noticeable. You may not want that. Dental bonding can offer many of the same results while matching the resin to your teeth. Crowns and even veneers can sometimes take a while to get used to. With dental bonding, you will hardly feel the changes to your tooth. Finally, because dental bonding can help cover cracks and chips, it is an inexpensive way of protecting your teeth from bacteria. The Dental Bonding Procedure If you have chips, cracks, or discoloration, you can turn to Centre for Smile Designs to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hopkins. At the consultation, Dr. Hopkins will ask about your medical history and oral health history. He will also want to know about your oral hygiene routines and whether you take any medications. He will then assess the damaged tooth to see if you are a good candidate for dental bonding. To determine this, he will take CBCT X-rays to make sure there is no bone loss. He will also examine your gums. If you have signs of gum disease or severe tooth decay, he will recommend treating those problems first. Dr. Hopkins will also tell you all about the costs you can expect. There are many payment options you can turn to, including Care Credit, which allows you to make monthly payments so you can get the exact treatment you need. Dr. Hopkins will help you select the right resin color. He has a resin color guide that allows him to customize the material. After that, he will roughen the surface of the tooth and apply a conditioning liquid, which can help the bonding resin stick to your teeth. Dr. Hopkins will then apply the resin, which has a consistency similar to putty, and shape it to cover the whole tooth or the damaged part of it. To dry the resin, he uses a special curing light that bonds the material to the surface of your tooth. Once the resin is dry and securely in place, Dr. Hopkins will polish it so it matches the rest of your teeth. Most people do not need anesthesia when getting dental bonding.

An average of 4 million people in the United States wear braces. Most people consider orthodontic treatment as necessary only for children and teens, but adults are increasingly turning to braces and aligners to perfect their smiles as well. John Hopkins, DDS, of Centre for Smile Designs offers clear aligners and other orthodontic treatment options for both children and adults to help your whole family achieve healthy and beautiful smiles. Understanding Orthodontic Treatment Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that helps correct malocclusion (bad bites) with certain orthodontic treatments, including braces, retainers, and clear aligners. How your teeth fit together has a huge impact on how your bite functions, on your appearance, and even on your oral health. Orthodontic treatment can help with issues like: Overlapping teeth Overbites Underbites Crowded teeth Crooked teeth Rotated teeth Impacted teeth One of the most common treatment options is metal braces. Metal braces are stainless steel brackets and wires that attach to your teeth using rubber bands. The brackets are bonded to your teeth, and they provide a fixed base that allows the other components of the braces to put the necessary pressure on your teeth. While metal braces are popular, they are not necessarily the best choice, especially for adults. Clear aligners, also known as invisible aligners, can move your teeth a little at a time using devices made of clear plastic. Two popular options for clear aligners include Invisalign and ClearCorrect. Dr. Hopkins offers both of these options at Centre for Smile Designs. Another type of orthodontic treatment is retainers. Retainers are removable devices that go over your teeth after you have completed treatment with your braces. Metal Braces vs. Clear Aligners While both metal braces and clear aligners can treat a range of smile concerns, there are some key differences between these two types of orthodontic treatment. Privacy Metal braces are easy to spot, while clear aligners are almost invisible. If you want to maintain your privacy and not let anyone know that you are getting orthodontic treatment, clear aligners are the best option. Convenience Clear aligners also require fewer visits to the office. With metal braces, you would have to come to see Dr. Hopkins at least once a month so that he can check how much your teeth have moved and make adjustments, but that is not necessary with clear aligners. When you get clear aligners, you receive various custom-made aligners, allowing you to go weeks without having to go to an appointment. Comfort Metal braces are also less comfortable to wear. The metal can rub against your gums and cheeks, causing sores. Clear aligners have smooth edges and no metal wires that can pinch you. They are also made with advanced 3D imaging to provide a perfect fit. Versatility Another benefit that clear aligners offer is that they are removable. You can take them out before meals, helping you enjoy all of your favorite foods without worrying about harming the device. With metal braces, you have to avoid many hard and sticky foods for fear of breaking the braces. Because aligners are removable, they are a versatile orthodontic treatment option that allows you to brush your teeth and floss as you normally would.

Many people wish that their teeth were a little bit whiter. In fact, this is the most common feature that people want to change about their smile. Teeth Whitening in Gulfport, MSThere is a significant demand for teeth whitening products, and many commercial solutions are available, like toothpaste, mouth rinses, and whitening strips. These products all claim they will brighten your smile, but nothing offers the effectiveness and customization of professional in-office whitening treatment. If you have discolored teeth that could use a little more sparkle, contact the Centre for Smile Designs for in-office treatments to enhance your gorgeous smile. What Causes Tooth Staining? Tooth discoloration can be due to extrinsic, intrinsic, or age-related staining. Extrinsic Staining Extrinsic staining is a superficial discoloration that affects the outer layer of tooth structure, the enamel. A substance outside your body causes these stains. They appear when your teeth come into contact with this material. Some substances that cause extrinsic stains include: Colorful vegetables and fruits, like blueberries Coffee, tea, dark sodas, and red wine Tobacco products This form of staining is not permanent, but removing extrinsic stains through regular brushing is difficult. Intrinsic Staining Intrinsic staining affects the dentin, which is the tooth’s inner layer. Although a thin layer of enamel covers the dentin, discolored inner layers can change the tooth’s outer appearance. An intrinsic stain is often caused by trauma, medication, or overexposure to fluoride. These stains are more difficult to treat than extrinsic stains and do not respond to whitening products. The best options for addressing intrinsic tooth stains are dental crowns, porcelain veneers, or dental bonding. Age-Related Staining Age-related stains are a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic staining. Dentin becomes yellow as you age, and tooth enamel becomes thinner. Since the dentin is more apparent, your teeth might develop a yellow hue. When intrinsic and extrinsic stains combine, like age-related concerns combined with years of drinking coffee, even healthy teeth will appear discolored. What Is in Bleaching Products? Although teeth whiteners are called bleaching products, they are not made with regular bleach. When you purchase a teeth whitening agent, you’re buying a material that contains peroxide as the active ingredient. Typically, hydrogen and carbamide peroxide work together to give you brighter results. Bleaching products offered at dental offices are much stronger than anything purchased in a store. These whitening agents may have as much as 35% to 45% peroxide, compared to a commercial whitening kit, which may have about 7%. Other professional and commercial whitening ingredients may include Carbopol, glycerin, sodium hydroxide, and added flavorings. Adverse Reactions to Whitening Products Teeth whitening is a common cosmetic procedure that delivers exceptional results. However, some people experience minor side effects. Sensitivity Many patients experience some sensitivity while using whitening products. This sensitivity may occur after one or two treatments but should decrease with time. You can treat sensitivity with potassium nitrate products, like Sensodyne toothpaste. Gum Irritation If the whitening gel comes into direct contact with your gum tissue, it could cause the tissues to become irritated. This irritation typically goes away a few hours after completing the treatment.

If you have stained, chipped, or smaller-than-average teeth, you may be looking for a way to improve your smile. One option is placing dental crowns on each tooth, but that procedure may be too time-consuming and invasive. An alternative treatment, known as porcelain veneers, could be a more suitable option. Like dental crowns, porcelain veneers are permanent restorative procedures that you and your dentist should decide on together. At the Centre for Smile Designs, John Hopkins, DDS, can help you decide whether dental veneers are the best treatment. Porcelain Veneers in Gulfport, MS What Are Porcelain Veneers? A porcelain veneer is a custom-made shell that covers the front surface of a tooth. The final product is bonded to your natural tooth. Veneers can cover a single chipped or stained tooth, but Dr. Hopkins recommends getting them done in pairs. The upper front teeth are the most common teeth that receive porcelain veneers, usually to cover discoloration or misshapen teeth. These restorations are made in a dental laboratory and require a few appointments. During the first appointment, Dr. Hopkins will prepare your teeth and take an impression to send to the dental lab. The veneers will be cemented onto your teeth at the second appointment. Who Is a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers? Porcelain veneers resolve aesthetic concerns for many patients. You may be a candidate for these cosmetic restorations if you have any of the following: Chipped or uneven teeth Gaps between your teeth Misshapen teeth Short teeth Stained or discolored teeth Severely stained teeth To qualify as a candidate for porcelain veneers, you must have healthy gums and teeth. Having a good home care routine is essential to the longevity of these cosmetic restorations. Benefits of Getting Dental Veneers Dr. Hopkins will help you explore your cosmetic dentistry options, but there are many benefits to getting dental veneers. Natural Appearance Porcelain veneers are custom-made based on an impression taken by Dr. Hopkins. This replica of your mouth helps the dental lab create a natural-looking shell to cover your tooth’s surface. Your veneers should look and feel natural, helping you feel confident in your smile. Most people will not be able to tell that you’ve had dental work done. Requires Minimal Enamel Removal Dental veneers are a less invasive procedure than other restorative options. Dr. Hopkins will remove just 0.5 millimeters of enamel from the front surface of your tooth. The bonded veneer will not look natural if this tissue isn’t removed. Low Maintenance Taking care of your porcelain veneers is like caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice daily and floss once to minimize plaque and tartar buildup. Schedule routine dental visits at the Centre for Smile Designs to ensure your restoration remains intact. These appointments will help keep your natural smile in tip-top shape. Durable and Stain-Resistant Proper oral hygiene helps your porcelain veneers resist staining. Additionally, you might avoid excessive red wine drinking, which can discolor your dental veneers. Using your veneers to bite down on ice or hard foods can cause them to chip or break. Being conscious of the foods you eat will help them last between 10 to 15 years.

Missing teeth can significantly impact your appearance and confidence. You may be searching for an affordable tooth replacement and want to understand all of your options. Understanding your potential treatment will help you determine the most suitable solution. A dental bridge may be the right solution if you need to replace one or more teeth. Dr. John Hopkins, DDS, from the Centre for Smile Design, has over 40 years of experience helping patients replace their missing teeth. You don’t have to let missing teeth affect your life when Dr. Hopkins can restore your smile with a dental bridge. What Are Dental Bridges? Dental Bridges in Gulfport, MS John Hopkins, DDSDental bridges are a type of dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. Each bridge has at least one artificial tooth made from a durable material to replace your missing natural tooth. This artificial tooth connects to a crown on each side that anchors the bridge onto your tooth. The crown portion of the bridge covers a minimum of two teeth to provide enough support to hold the artificial tooth in place. If you do not have enough natural teeth, Dr. Hopkins may recommend placing dental implants to stabilize the bridge. Why Would I Need a Dental Bridge? Everyone needs teeth to speak and chew properly, and dental bridges can improve your ability to do both by replacing your missing teeth. But missing teeth can disrupt more than how you enjoy your food or talk to your friends. The American Dental Association states that missing teeth cause numerous issues, such as: Sagging around your mouth, making you look older Shifting or tilting of remaining teeth Feeling less confident about your smile Missing a single tooth can negatively impact how you feel about your smile and overall appearance. Dental bridges can address your missing teeth and improve your smile in the following ways: Improving your ability to speak and chew Restoring your face’s natural shape Preventing the remaining teeth from drifting into the open space left by the missing tooth Relieving uneven stress from your bite Dental bridges are custom-made to fit perfectly and create a beautiful smile. The Restorative Process for Dental Bridges Dental bridges typically take two appointments to complete. The abutment teeth (your natural teeth) are prepared at the first appointment through reshaping. A portion of the enamel must be removed to create room for the crown to sit on top of them. After the tooth is prepared, impressions are taken and turned into a model. A dental lab uses the dental model to create the new restoration. Your next appointment will be approximately two weeks away since you have to wait for your bridge to be made. Dr. Hopkins will place a temporary crown to protect the area during this time. On your second visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and the new restoration is fitted and adjusted to create a final perfect fit. Dental bridges get permanently cemented into your mouth to ensure they remain in place.

Nearly three in five Americans are dissatisfied with their smile. As a result of that dissatisfaction, they hide their teeth in photos and remove pictures of themselves online. Fortunately, we live in a time where you don’t have to be embarrassed and cover your mouth out of hope that no one notices your discolored teeth. Many options exist for restoring your teeth and once again feeling comfortable when you smile. A smile makeover is not any single procedure but the science and technology of cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry with the art and beauty we endow it with. It includes a range of dental procedures that enhance your smile to help you achieve your ideal appearance. Dr. John Hopkins, DDS, will determine the best treatment options to improve your aesthetics and confidence. What Is a Smile Makeover? A smile makeover is a carefully selected group of cosmetic dental procedures that upgrades your smile. These procedures produce your ideal results and boost your overall appearance by correcting minor imperfections. Your transformation begins with an evaluation by Dr. Hopkins to determine which areas will benefit from dental procedures. He’ll pay attention to any instances of cracks, chips, uneven teeth, spaces, or dislocation. Then, he will design a smile makeover to address these flaws. Some of the treatments Dr. Hopkins uses to remake your smile include: Veneers Tooth-colored fillings Mini dental implants Dental crowns or bridges Professional teeth whitening Invisalign or Clear Correct Dr. Hopkins considers every patient and their unique needs to create a one-of-a-kind smile makeover that will make you beam from ear to ear. A smile makeover has three primary components: color, alignment, and symmetry. Depending on the current condition of your teeth, Dr. Hopkins may recommend a professional tooth whitening treatment or dental veneers to create a brighter smile. Misaligned teeth can be straightened with Invisalign clear aligners or porcelain veneers. And your dentist creates symmetry through deep cleaning, cavity restoration, or other necessary dental treatments. Who Needs a Smile Makeover? Most patients are candidates for this cosmetic dental procedure, but there are several questions you can ask to determine whether you might need a smile makeover: Do you like the spacing of your teeth? Are your teeth cracked, chipped, or worn? Do you have a gummy smile? Are you satisfied with the color of your smile? Do your teeth appear too small or too large? If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you’re a candidate for a smile makeover.

At Centre for Smile Designs, we do everything we can to improve patient experiences and outcomes. That includes a commitment to implementing the latest dental technology. We use various 3D imaging methods to enhance how we handle your diagnosis and treatment planning. Taking a Closer Look with CBCT 3D Imaging in Gulfport, MS CBCT X-Ray John Hopkins, DDSWhen it’s time to take a closer look at your teeth, Dr. Hopkins uses cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This is a special method that relies on X-rays to generate a complete 3D image of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding tissues. This modern technology does far more than what traditional X-rays can do. It also provides a detailed look at soft tissues such as muscles and nerves, which lets us carry out more effective diagnosis and treatment planning. The technology is safe and effective. Our team carries out CBCT scans with our in-office equipment. You’ll be comfortable throughout the entire process, which takes just a few seconds to capture complete 3D imaging. This relatively recent innovation provides an incredible boost in imaging capabilities while maintaining patient safety. It is quickly becoming the clear choice for diagnosis, as 38.2% of dentists now have on-site CBCT. How 3D Imaging Lets Us Provide Better Diagnosis With detailed, high-resolution 3D imaging, Dr. Hopkins can evaluate many additional aspects of your oral health. CBCT is a powerful tool for getting to the root cause of any symptoms you might have. It avoids the need for more invasive investigation in many cases. Oral health issues are often complex and challenging to diagnose. Symptoms such as toothaches, jaw pain, and more can arise due to any number of conditions. The comprehensive look that 3D imaging provides lets us quickly identify what’s behind your symptoms so that we can provide timely and effective treatment. CBCT lets us see your teeth, jaw, and surrounding tissues from every angle. This greatly reduces the risk of any potential issues being overlooked. The ability of the technology to capture soft tissue imaging is indispensable when diagnosing a wide range of tooth and jaw issues. Faster, more accurate diagnosis means less time in the dentist’s chair for patients. Providing the best possible treatment sooner lets us provide better oral health outcomes for you and your family. Planning Your Treatment to the Finest Detail The team at Centre for Smile Designs uses our modern 3D imaging technology for more than just diagnosis. It is a powerful tool for planning treatment. Traditionally, many procedures were impossible to plan fully without invasive exploration. Now, highly detailed 3D imaging provides improved planning, leading to fewer complications. 3D Imaging and Dental Implants Dental implants are among the most widely recommended tooth replacement options today. They provide strong and durable replacement teeth, whether for individual crowns or implant-supported dentures. At Centre for Smile Designs, we use CBCT to carefully plan your dental implant treatment.

Mini Dental Implants

Over one-quarter of adults 65 or older have eight or fewer teeth remaining. You may have tried to replace your missing teeth with traditional dentures that are challenging to wear. Traditional dentures can create additional difficulties for patients already struggling. One of the ideal solutions for these patients is dental implants. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry estimates that over 3 million Americans have at least one dental implant in place. And this number continues to grow by 500,000 every year! However, not everyone may be a candidate for conventional implants. Fortunately, there is another option: mini dental implants. As the name suggests, these alternative treatments are smaller versions of traditional implants created to help secure dentures. John Hopkins, DDS, of Centre for Smile Designs provides gentle mini dental implant procedures in Gulfport, MS. If you want to improve your denture retention or enhance your smile, turn to Centre for Smile Designs. What Are Mini Dental Implants? Mini Dental Implants in Gulfport, MSMini dental implants resemble conventional dental implants but are smaller in diameter. Traditional implants are approximately 5 mm around, with mini implants measuring less than 3 mm. These smaller dental devices are available in various lengths, and Dr. Hopkins will choose the best option that matches your jaw size and shape. Conventional dental implants consist of three pieces and require multiple appointments to complete the procedure, which involves surgically placing the titanium post, attaching the abutment, and placing the artificial tooth on top. Mini dental implants have a single titanium post with a connected adapter. This adapter allows a denture or artificial tooth to connect to the metal rod using a socket and an O-ring. Benefits of Choosing Mini Dental Implants Mini dental implants have a variety of uses, including serving as a replacement for a single tooth or several teeth, as well as stabilizing dentures. These implants can provide you with numerous benefits. Less Jawbone Structure Needed Conventional dental implants require adequate bone structure to support them. Because mini dental implants are smaller, they do not need as much jawbone, making them more suitable for patients who have lost jawbone density. No Required Bone Grafting For traditional implant placement to succeed, patients with lower jawbone density typically must have jawbone grafting before implant placement. The site can take one year to heal, which can substantially delay your implant placement. In contrast, mini dental implants do not require an additional bone grafting procedure. Less Invasive Surgery Mini dental implants do not require extensive surgical procedures like conventional dental implants do. Instead, Dr. Hopkins uses a local anesthetic, making the process less invasive and painful. Faster Recovery Time Because the procedure is less invasive, patients require less recovery after placing mini dental implants. This means that you will be able to resume your normal activities and begin eating the foods you enjoy more quickly.

I went in for a filling and they were amazing, especially Ms. Alison! They were informative and so sweet, explaining the process step by step as they helped me with my emergency . They also gave me insight on future dental procedures I would need that other dental offices didn’t even mention to me even though I went the same week. I will be back!

Not a good business. The staff discusses patients’ confidential information with people outside the office. I had an unpaid balance that I forgot about, and the woman at the front desk gossiped to a mutual friend about me needing to pay off my past-due bill. It was embarrassing and completely unprofessional. I was also hesitant to pay anything further because the filling I had done there was poorly done. It was uneven and looked like a 10 year old could’ve done it better, and I ended up having to get it corrected by another dentist. The new dentist was shocked by the quality of the work, especially since it had only been done about two weeks prior. I won’t be returning, and I would be careful dealing with an office where private patient information is discussed outside of the practice.
