LASIK

Dr. Bruce Cohen has been performing LASIK eye surgery in the greater St. Louis, Missouri, area since 1994. Dr. Cohen was one of the first LASIK surgeons in the area trained to use the excimer laser for laser refractive surgery after its approval by the FDA in 1995. Dr. Cohen’s longstanding expertise gives his patients peace of mind and confidence that they will soon be enjoying sharper, clearer vision.

Cataract Surgery

Blurry vision increases your chances of falls, getting into car accidents, or stumbling at night. Studies show that patients with cataracts experience many complications and if the condition is not eventually treated, it can even lead to blindness. Symptoms of cataracts include blurry sight, decreased night vision, and seeing glares or halos around light. When you remove cataracts, your vision is restored and your symptoms alleviated. You may no longer need contact lenses or glasses after surgery.

IOL Refractive Surgery

These artificial lenses have different uses. While some IOLs fit atop the natural lens of the eye, other IOLs completely replace the lens. In either case, patients can experience improved vision thanks to these implants. Intraocular lenses are artificial lens implants that are made of a safe and comfortable clear plastic. These lenses are custom designed to enhance your eyesight and are often placed as part of cataract surgery.

Dry Eye Treatment

Tears help your eyes stay healthy and feel comfortable. If you are not producing enough tears or if you are producing poor-quality tears, it can cause a condition called dry eye. Each time you blink, your eye gets covered by a tear film. This tear film consists of three layers: An oily layer produced by the meibomian glands. These glands produce oil that prevents tears from drying too quickly.

PRK Surgery

Dr. Cohen, our experienced surgeon, will use a Visx Custom Wavefront Laser to reshape your cornea during a short outpatient procedure. This is performed at our state-of-the-art St. Louis, MO, practice. PRK helps light rays that enter your eye focus more effectively on the surface of the retina, reducing or eliminating distorted vision. The end result is sharper, clearer eyesight that may make contact lenses or prescription glasses a thing of your past.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects your macula, the part of your retina responsible for central vision. Dry AMD occurs when the macula becomes thinner, causing gradual vision changes. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels leak and cause scarring of the macula, resulting in sudden changes in central vision. If left untreated, this disease can result in permanent vision loss. In fact, it is the leading cause of vision loss among people over 50.

Corneal Cross-Linking

Corneal cross-linking is a treatment for the eye disease known as keratoconus. Keratoconus causes your cornea, which is the front part of your eye, to degrade over time. This weakening leads to a bulging of the cornea, which can severely blur and distort your vision. Some studies suggest that keratoconus occurs in as many as 1 in 500 people. While symptoms may start in one eye and seem mild at first, this condition typically worsens for as long as two decades. If left untreated, the only solution may be a major and costly corneal transplant surgery.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the retina, the light sensitive tissue located at the back of the eye. High blood sugar levels can cause damage to the retinal blood vessels. The damaged blood vessels leak blood into the retina, impairing vision. In later stages, new blood vessels grow to replace the damaged retinal blood vessels. Unfortunately, these new blood vessels are poorly formed and prone to ruptures and leakage that affect the condition of the retina.
