Child and adolescent individual therapy applies techniques and methods to help kids who are experiencing difficulties with their emotions or behavior. Although there are different types of therapy, most rely on communications as the basic tool for bringing about change in a child’s feelings and behaviors. Individual therapy will involve an individual child or adolescent and also typically involves primary caregivers to the extent necessary. Playing, drawing, building, and pretending, as well as talking, are important ways children and adolescents share their feelings and resolve problems. Our therapy services can help address ADHD, behavioral issues, learning disabilities, social skills, and much more.

TMS
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and is a FDA-cleared treatment for depression. Using an electromagnetic field similar to an MRI machine, TMS delivers precise, non-invasive pulses to the area of the brain shown to be underactive in depression. TMS is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).
At Sonder, we offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment for depression using NeuroStar Advanced Therapy, a cutting-edge, non-invasive approach that fits into a holistic plan for emotional wellness.
TMS is:
Safe and FDA-cleared
Non-drug and non-invasive
Covered by most insurance plans
Now available in both traditional and accelerated treatment formats
If you’ve felt like nothing else is working—or you’re simply ready for a new path forward—TMS could be the proactive next step.
Accelerated TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Our new protocol significantly reduces the time required for treatment, allowing patients to experience improvements in their mood in a shorter time frame.
This innovative approach builds on well-established TMS techniques while enhancing accessibility and efficiency.
FDA Cleared, First in Its Class
In a historic advancement for adolescent mental health, NeuroStar is the first and only TMS treatment approved by the FDA for use in adolescents (ages 15–21) with MDD. This clearance represents a new gold standard in depression care for teens, particularly those who haven’t responded to therapy or medication.
Backed by Real-World Results
Over 1,000 adolescents have already received NeuroStar TMS in real-life settings.
78% experienced a clinically meaningful reduction in their depression symptoms.
The FDA clearance was based on this compelling data from NeuroStar’s proprietary TrakStar® platform.
Safe, Effective, & Proven
TMS does not circulate in the bloodstream and comes without common medication side effects like weight gain, fatigue, or sexual dysfunction.
Mild side effects may include headache or scalp discomfort, usually resolving after the first week.
When used alongside existing treatment plans, TMS has shown remarkable safety and efficacy, helping teens finally find relief.
Quick Access to Care
NeuroStar’s cutting-edge coil design means there’s no delay in offering TMS for adolescents.
Sonder’s TMS services are ready for your teen today!
Changing the Future of Mental Health
An estimated 4.3 million adolescents in the U.S. live with major depressive disorder. TMS expands the treatment landscape, offering a practical and powerful solution when other treatments fall short.
We’re proud to bring this life-changing technology to families in our community and to walk beside you on the path to healing.
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with OCD symptoms. By enhancing neural activity in the cerebral cortex, TMS can reduce compulsive thoughts and behaviors.
Unlike medications, TMS is a non-drug, non-invasive therapy with minimal side effects. This makes it an ideal option for individuals who have not found lasting relief through traditional treatments.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sonder Behavioral Health and Wellness - Oakdale
What is TMS Therapy?
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a medication-free treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate the parts of the brain involved in mood regulation. These areas are often underactive in people with depression.
Unlike ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), TMS Therapy treatment for depression is comfortable, non-sedating, and requires no downtime. You’ll stay awake and alert during your session, then go about the rest of your day.
Sessions typically occur 5 days a week for 6 to 8 weeks in our warm and welcoming clinic. Treatments last between 4 and 40 minutes, depending on your personalized protocol.
Is TMS Therapy Safe?
Yes. Unlike medication, it works directly on your brain’s mood centers without systemic side effects.
Some patients report mild headache or scalp discomfort in the first week. These side effects are temporary and usually improve quickly.
Neurostar – The TMS Therapy preferred by Doctors.
How effective is TMS?
The results speak for themselves. More than 5 million NeuroStar TMS Therapy treatments have been delivered to over 140,000 patients nationwide.
According to clinical data:
83% of patients saw measurable improvement in their depression symptoms.
62% of patients reached remission.
These outcomes make TMS Therapy treatment for depression one of the most effective options for individuals who haven’t found relief with other approaches.
Who Is a Good Candidate for TMS Therapy?
TMS Therapy is often associated with treatment-resistant depression, but it doesn’t have to be your last resort! In fact, many individuals are now exploring TMS Therapy earlier in their treatment journey to avoid long-term medication use or worsening symptoms.
You may be a candidate if you:
Are age 15 or older and diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder
Have tried at least one antidepressant without success
Want a non-drug option that works alongside therapy and other treatments
TMS Therapy can also be used as an adjunct treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in adults.
Is TMS Therapy Covered by Insurance?
Yes. Most major insurers—including Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and commercial plans—cover TMS treatment for depression, as long as you meet medical criteria. Our team will walk you through the process, conduct a benefits investigation, and offer financing or assistance options as needed.
What is Spravato?
Spravato is a prescription nasal spray made from esketamine, a fast-acting medicine related to ketamine. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which target serotonin or other neurotransmitters and can take weeks to work, Spravato acts on the brain’s glutamate system—helping to form new neural connections and relieve symptoms more quickly.
It’s been FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression and for those experiencing depression with suicidal thoughts. For many, it represents a new beginning after years of struggling with medications that haven’t worked.
At Sonder, we administer Spravato in our certified outpatient treatment center, where your safety, comfort, and progress are our top priorities.
Who is a good candidate for Spravato?
Spravato may be a great option for you if you:
Have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
Are experiencing acute suicidal ideation
Have tried at least two other antidepressants without enough relief
Spravato may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with a history of psychosis, certain substance use disorders, certain heart conditions, high blood pressure, or liver concerns. Our team at Sonder will conduct a thorough evaluation to ensure Spravato is a safe and effective option for you, helping you find the best path for your treatment.
How does Spravato differ from Traditional Antidepressants?
Most traditional antidepressants—like SSRIs and SNRIs—work by increasing levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine in the brain. These medications typically take 4 to 6 weeks to build up in your system and begin relieving symptoms. And for some people, they may not work at all.
Spravato (esketamine) is different.
Spravato targets the brain’s glutamate system, a completely different pathway than traditional antidepressants.
Glutamate is the brain’s most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter and plays a major role in mood regulation, learning, and memory.
By acting on NMDA receptors (a type of glutamate receptor), Spravato helps create new neural connections in the brain—essentially “rewiring” areas affected by depression.
This mechanism is thought to be responsible for Spravato’s rapid effects, often providing relief within hours or days rather than weeks.
In short: Spravato offers a new way forward, especially for those who haven’t responded to other treatments. It doesn’t just boost brain chemicals—it helps the brain reconnect and heal in a fundamentally different way.
Can I Be on Both Spravato and Antidepressants?
Yes, you can—but it’s not always required. Spravato is FDA-approved both as a stand-alone treatment and as an add-on to an oral antidepressant, depending on your diagnosis. For treatment-resistant depression, it’s typically used alongside an oral antidepressant. However, for patients experiencing acute suicidal thoughts or behavior, Spravato may be used on its own.
That said, some insurance companies may require you to stay on an oral antidepressant in order to approve coverage. Our team will walk you through your specific insurance requirements and work with you and your prescribing provider to determine the best and safest treatment plan for your needs.
Spravato vs. Ketamine: What’s the Difference?
Both Spravato and ketamine-based treatments have shown promise for people with treatment-resistant depression. However, there are key differences:
Spravato is FDA-approved for depression and must be administered in a certified clinic under medical supervision.
Ketamine is not FDA-approved for depression (when used off-label) and is available in various forms, including IV infusions, intramuscular shots, and lozenges.
Insurance typically covers Spravato, while ketamine treatment is usually out-of-pocket.
Both work by targeting the glutamate system, but Spravato uses esketamine, a more targeted form of ketamine.
At Sonder, we prioritize evidence-based, accessible care. For those who qualify, Spravato offers an effective, insurance-covered option with a strong safety profile.
What can I expect during Spravato treatment?
Spravato treatment at Sonder is structured for both comfort and safety:
Initial Assessment: The process begins with a call from our Spravato Coordinator, who will discuss your needs, answer any questions, and gather initial information. If Spravato is a good fit for you, we’ll schedule a thorough intake appointment with one of our experienced psychiatric providers to plan your treatment.
Authorization: Our Spravato coordinator will handle the prior authorization process with your insurance to secure approval for the medication, which may take up to 30 days. Approval doesn’t guarantee full coverage, so you may have out-of-pocket costs like deductibles or copays. Before starting treatment, we’ll conduct a benefits investigation to clarify your financial responsibilities, ensuring you’re fully informed.
In-Clinic Administration: Spravato is delivered through a nasal spray that you’ll administer yourself at our clinic, with support from our trained staff. Afterward, you’ll relax in a comfortable, private room for two hours while our team monitors your safety and ensures your well-being.
Please Note: You must arrange a ride home after every treatment session. For your safety, patients cannot drive themselves after receiving Spravato. A family member, friend, or rideshare service (such as Uber or Lyft) is acceptable. Additionally, you should not drive or operate machinery until the next day, after a full night’s sleep.
Treatment Schedule: Spravato treatment starts with two sessions a week for four weeks, totaling eight sessions. Then, you’ll shift to one session per week for the next four weeks. After these first eight weeks, your provider will adjust the schedule based on how you’re responding. You’ll check in with your Spravato provider every four weeks to track your progress and personalize your care.
What are the possible side effects of Spravato?
Most Spravato side effects are mild and temporary, and not everyone experiences them. You may not have any side effects at all, but potential ones include:
Feeling detached or “out of it” (dissociation)
Dizziness
Nausea
Headache
Slightly higher blood pressure
Needing to urinate more often
Nasal or sinus discomfort
Our trained staff closely monitors every session to ensure your safety and comfort throughout your treatment.
Does insurance cover Spravato?
Yes! Most insurance plans do cover Spravato (esketamine), including both the medication and the necessary medical supervision as long as their criteria are met. Approval criteria are generally similar across insurance companies, and we work closely with you to ensure your treatment is covered as fully as possible, making the process as smooth and manageable as we can.
Before starting treatment, our team will:
Conduct a benefits investigation to determine your specific coverage
Provide a clear estimate of any out-of-pocket costs
Assist with obtaining prior authorizations, if necessary
When applicable, explore financing options or manufacturer assistance programs
We accept nearly all insurance plans and are committed to finding the best solution for your needs.
Is there a long waiting list for Spravato?
Not at all! Spravato services are currently available at our Minnetonka location and we have immediate openings for new patients.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth is the delivery of psychological, medical, and/or other health-related services and information via electronic telecommunication technologies. (You might also have seen it referred to by other terms, like telemedicine , teletherapy , telepsychiatry , telepsychology , online therapy , virtual therapy , remote therapy , e-health , or e-medicine.)
At Sonder, we use a HIPPA compliant telehealth platform to provide therapy sessions and medication management through video conferencing on a mobile device, tablet, or computer. (A member of our team will walk you through the necessary steps to get connected when you make your appointment.)
Telehealth is safe, convenient, and effective.
Is teletherapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes, teletherapy is every bit as effective as in-person therapy. A comprehensive analysis of 20 years of data comparing teletherapy and in-person therapy concluded that there is no difference between these two delivery methods (Batastini, 2021).
In fact, teletherapy is actually a preferred option for some people! Many of our clients share that telehealth has made therapy more accessible by removing common barriers, such as childcare stress and cost, time off work, traffic, distance, and mobility issues.
Is telepsychiatry as effective as in-person psychiatry?
Yes, but with an important qualification:
There is strong evidence that telepsychiatry is effective– marked by diagnostic reliability, clinical outcomes, and a high degree of patient satisfaction. Recent research also emphasizes that most people are both comfortable with and willing to use telepsychiatry (Sharma & Devon, 2021).
However, while both therapy and medication management services can be accessed virtually, in certain instances it might be more appropriate or necessary for a patient to come in to our clinic for face-to-face appointments.
Please consult your medication management provider to determine what’s best for you. (Not connected to a provider yet? Contact us here and a member of our team will follow up with you to answer any questions and help get you scheduled.)
How do I schedule a telehealth session?
Scheduling a telehealth session is quick and convenient.
If you’re new to Sonder (or returning after a break): Contact us here and a member of our team will follow up to get you scheduled.
If you’re a current patient: Please note that telehealth might not be appropriate for certain situations/services, so consulting your provider is a necessary first step. If you and your provider determine telehealth is a good fit for you, simply contact your provider to schedule your next appointment or call us
What kind of technological resources do I need access to in order to access telehealth?
It’s essential that you’re able to communicate clearly with your telehealth provider. So, to access teletherapy or telepsychiatry services, you’ll need a computer, tablet, or mobile device that has a camera, microphone, and speakers.
To help guard against disruptions during your session, you’ll also need access to a strong internet connection (either WiFi or wired) and a secure place from which to participate. Plug-in or wireless headphones or earbuds can help reduce noise.
Can I access telehealth services from anywhere?
Yes. One of the benefits of telehealth is its flexibility.
You’re welcome to connect from just about anywhere, provided you’re able to access your appointment from a safe, reliable, private, and relatively distraction-free location in the state in which your provider is licensed. (Note: All of our providers are licensed in Minnesota. A few have licenses in other states. To learn more about this, please contact us and we can answer your questions and verify eligibility.)
Many people enjoy connecting with their provider from the comfort of home. Others prefer “attending” their sessions from a secure location at work or even in their car. (Some insurances do have certain limitations around locations that are acceptable for telehealth. Questions about this? Please contact us.)
Our telehealth platform includes a user-friendly mobile app, which makes connecting with your provider flexible and easy. It’s all about what’s best for you.
How secure is the technology you’re using for telehealth?
Our providers (and all of our team members) act in accordance with HIPAA regulations and current best practices, including technology that is encrypted to ensure security.
Are my telehealth therapy sessions still confidential?
Yes. All of our providers follow HIPAA-compliant practices, including connecting to each of your telehealth sessions from a private location using secure technology. We take seriously our commitment to protecting your privacy, but you share in this responsibility by taking steps to ensure that you’re connecting from a safe, private, and interruption-free location, device, and network.
What happens if we have technical issues during a telehealth session?
We’ll do all we can to guard against, and troubleshoot, technical issues and disruptions to your session. In the unlikely event that we’re unable to resolve connection issues, we will only bill for the time we were able to “meet” with you directly. But, rest assured that in most instances, we’re able to troubleshoot these issues and help get you connected!
How can I prepare for my telehealth appointment?
Once your device, connection, and location are secured, you can prepare for your teletherapy or telepsychiatry appointment by taking some time to reflect on your questions, needs, and goals. This will help focus the time with your provider.
Many patients also find it helpful to enlist support from trusted people around them, asking for assistance with childcare, time off to attend sessions, or simple check-ins and accountability.
How is a telehealth appointment billed? Does it cost the same as an in-person session?
Telehealth is billed in a very similar fashion to in-person appointments. (We take care of all this on our end to make the process as seamless as possible for you!) The cost of a telehealth session is the same as the cost of meeting with your provider in person.
Can you see young children via telehealth?
Telehealth can be an excellent option for children and families! In many cases, sessions can be adapted (and even improved) using technological components. (We do ask that a parent or guardian be present during these sessions to assist with any tech issues that may come up.)
There are some instances, however, where telehealth sessions might not be appropriate for kids. Certain types of play therapy or parent-child interaction therapy, for example, are best completed in person. As always, it will be up to your (or your child’s) provider to determine if telehealth services are appropriate.
Who isn’t eligible for telehealth?
In addition to specific types of play therapy or family therapy discussed above, there are certain modalities that must be delivered at one of our clinics. For example, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) are two treatments that require patients to be present in-person.
(Not sure if telehealth is appropriate for you? Contact us to speak with a member of our team or consult with your current provider at your next appointment.)
Finally, our providers are only able to work with individuals who are present in the state in which their provider is licensed. (Note: All of our providers are licensed in Minnesota. A few have licenses in other states. To learn more about this, please contact us and we can answer your questions and verify eligibility.)
What if I want to switch from in-person to telehealth appointments going forward?
Each person is different, and so is their wellness plan.
For many people, starting services in person might be most appropriate. In most instances, it works to transition to telehealth if that becomes the preferred modality; for others, a hybrid of both works best.
To determine if telehealth is right for you, please consult with your current provider.
Can my in-person appointment be switched to a telehealth visit at the last minute?
We understand life can sometimes pose unexpected challenges to attending your sessions in person! If something comes up, please call us at (952) 999-6097 as soon as possible.
In most cases, and when appropriate, we’ll be able to change your in-person appointment to a telehealth session in just a few minutes.
Wherever you are, we’re ready to meet you there.
What is accelerated TMS?
Accelerated TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Our new protocol significantly reduces the time required for treatment, allowing patients to experience improvements in their mood in a shorter time frame.
This innovative approach builds on well-established TMS techniques while enhancing accessibility and efficiency.
Who is a good candidate for accelerated TMS?
This treatment may be right for you if you meet the following criteria:
Age: 15 years or older
Diagnosis: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) or significant signs/symptoms of MDD and currently experiencing a major depressive episode
Treatment History: A history of at least one antidepressant medication
What does the accelerated TMS treatment process involve?
At Sonder, we aim to make your experience as seamless as possible. Here’s what you can expect when you partner with us for accelerated TMS:
Initial Assessment:
You’ll begin by consulting with one of our TMS Coordinators. They’ll gather your information and schedule an intake with one of our TMS providers.
Treatment Sessions:
The accelerated TMS protocol is completed over five consecutive days in our comfortable outpatient office.
Each session lasts approximately 3 minutes and 20 seconds and includes 6 to 8 treatments per day (6 on Monday and Friday; 8 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).
You’ll be in-office from 9am to 4pm, allowing for significant symptom relief in just one week.
Post-Treatment Monitoring:
After each session, our team will monitor your response to ensure your comfort and safety.
What makes Sonder’s accelerated TMS protocol unique?
Our accelerated TMS protocol utilizes a proven F3 mapping technique to determine the optimal treatment location based on individual anatomy This makes it more accessible than other protocols requiring complex neuroimaging.
Our approach also prioritizes convenience. Unlike the SAINT protocol, which requires 10 treatments per day, our method condenses treatment to ensure effective results in a more manageable timeframe.
How effective is accelerated TMS?
Our recent pilot study highlighted the efficacy of this new protocol, showcasing:
Significant reduction in depression symptoms: Participants reported substantial improvements, with many experiencing positive changes within the first week.
High response rates: Approximately 70% of participants showed a meaningful response to treatment.
These findings reinforce the potential of accelerated TMS to offer rapid and lasting relief from chronic depression.
We prioritize your safety and will monitor your experience closely to address any concerns that arise.
Will my insurance cover accelerated TMS?
We are pleased to offer financing through CareCredit. Accelerated TMS is not currently covered by insurance, however, standard TMS is covered by most insurance companies. We encourage you to reach out to our team to discuss financing options.
Is TMS Right for Your Teen?
NeuroStar TMS is cleared for adolescents (ages 15–21) with Major Depressive Disorder who have not improved with antidepressants or therapy alone.
TMS is covered by many insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and most commercial providers. Our team can help you explore coverage and financing options.
What is TMS for OCD?
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with OCD symptoms. By enhancing neural activity in the cerebral cortex, TMS can reduce compulsive thoughts and behaviors.
Unlike medications, TMS is a non-drug, non-invasive therapy with minimal side effects. This makes it an ideal option for individuals who have not found lasting relief through traditional treatments.
Why Consider TMS for OCD?
FDA-Cleared: Clinically validated as an adjunct treatment for OCD, providing relief for treatment-resistant cases.
Non-Invasive: No surgery, anesthesia, or systemic side effects like those associated with medications.
Compatible with Existing Treatments: TMS can be used alongside medication and therapy to enhance results.
Minimal Disruptions: Short, 18-minute sessions with no recovery time, allowing you to continue your daily life without interruption.
Are you a crisis mental health clinic?
We do not offer crisis services. Please call 911 or the Hennepin County Crisis Connection in the event of an emergency: COPE for adults (612-596-1223) and Child Crisis for children (612-348-2233.)
Does Sonder take insurance?
Yes, we are in-network with most major insurance companies. We attempt to verify that you have coverage prior to your visit and we will handle all the billing to your insurance plan. Ultimately, your health insurance is your benefit and you are responsible for knowing your coverage.
How do I know which therapist to see?
The provider you see will depend on your reason for seeking therapy, your preference in treatment modality, your insurance, and your schedule. We encourage you to read the biographies of each of our providers to determine who you think may be a good fit for you.
We are available to answer any questions you may have or to facilitate your decision making process.
How often would I come to therapy?
That depends on your reason for seeking therapy and your specific needs. We want you to come as often or as occasionally as is best for your situation. Most clients start with weekly, one-hour sessions but others may come in less frequently. Very occasionally, some clients will come twice a week if they are experiencing a more acute issue or need extra support.
The duration of therapy also varies from individual to individual. Some people need only short-term therapy because their issue requires only a few new skills that are relatively easy to learn and implement. Whereas other people may desire longer-term therapy to explore how their personal history is contributing to their current struggles. Depending on the situation and the individual, learning new skills and gaining insights is a process that can happen slowly or more quickly.
While we do not want to rush the therapeutic process, we also do not want to keep anyone in therapy longer than is necessary or desired. Your therapist will be able to give you a better understanding of your timeline once he or she has had an opportunity to meet you and gain a better understanding of your personal history and reasons for seeking therapy.
What does Out-of-Network or Point-of-Service mean?
These mean that you have a choice in your insurance plan to go outside of your particular HMO or Managed Care Network. This gives you options and typically you will have a deductible and then an 80/20 plan. The advantage of these is that there is less control from the insurance company over your care.
What is the cost of therapy?
The cost of therapy depends on your insurance coverage. To better understand your behavioral health coverage, contact your insurance company to inquire about your explanation of benefits (EOB).
If you are without insurance or your insurance is limited, we will make every effort to work with you to find a payment plan.
What should I expect at my first therapy appointment?
The first therapy appointment is referred to as the “intake session.” During this appointment, your therapist will be gathering information from you to better understand your personal history and reason for seeking therapy. You will also have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Together, you and your therapist will discuss the best plan of action for you moving forward.
Can medication help me?
The short answer: It depends. For many of the concerns that bring folks to therapy, medication can be a valuable tool to help address what’s going on. For others, medication might not be appropriate.
The best way to find out is to request an appointment to talk through your options with our medication management team. And in the meantime, check out this post on 7 common medication questions.
How long will it take for my medication to start working?
Again, the short answer is: It depends. While most medications begin “working” right away, the length of time before you notice a difference can vary quite a bit.
Think of other medications you may have taken before:
