Oral Pathology

Oral pathology encompasses oral disease, its causes, and its effects. Oral diseases have a number of causes, including biological, chemical, or physical agents or hormonal or developmental changes. Abnormal tissues in the head and neck regions are called lesions. Different types of lesions can indicate different pathologies; such as benign lesions or malignant lesions (cancers). Our surgeons will perform a complete head and neck exam, which includes the oral cavity in order to determine if a biopsy is required. True North Oral Surgery & Implants performs oral pathology in Woodbury, Maplewood & Forest Lake, MN. Contact us to schedule an appointment for an oral exam.

Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, is done to correct misalignments or other abnormalities in the upper and/or lower jaw. The surgery is performed to improve function and can specifically address problems with breathing, occlusion (bite) and chewing ability, difficulty chewing, and/or speaking that are due to poor jaw or tooth alignment. The surgery often dramatically affects appearance as well, supporting greater facial harmony, although this is usually not the primary reason the surgery is performed. Our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons bring advanced training and extensive experience to every procedure, ensuring patients receive the best surgical care in a comfortable experience. As specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery, we have a deep understanding of the jaw, oral cavity, and surrounding structures — and we work closely with your orthodontist and dentist to deliver the best possible outcomes. Orthognathic surgery can involve procedures such as an osteotomy (bone cutting), bone grafts, distraction osteogenesis (stretching of the bone), and orthodontic (braces) care. Orthognathic correction is conducted in stages, and the course of treatment can last from a few months to a year or more. The surgical procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, and most patients can expect a recovery period of several weeks. We offer a range of anesthesia options and will discuss the approach that best supports your well-being during your consultation.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift, also sometimes referred to as sinus augmentation, is performed when there is a need to increase the amount of bone structure in the molar and/or pre-molar section of the upper jawbone. This surgery is usually performed for the purpose of supporting a dental implant, which can be placed once the bone has healed and shows sufficient density and mass to support the implants.

Sedation for Oral Surgery

Various sedation methods, such as nitrous oxide, conscious oral sedation, and IV sedation, are available to help patients remain calm during oral surgery procedures. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," provides quick relaxation and wears off soon after treatment. At the same time, conscious oral sedation keeps patients awake. Still, it significantly reduces anxiety; for more complex procedures or those with heightened anxiety, IV sedation or general anesthesia may be recommended, allowing patients to sleep throughout the treatment. Your dentist can guide you in choosing the most suitable sedation option based on your specific requirements.

Oral Surgery Procedures

Oral surgery encompasses a variety of procedures aimed at addressing complex dental issues that cannot be resolved with general dentistry alone. These procedures require precision and expertise to ensure optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes. From dental implants to orthodontic surgeries, oral surgery can help restore and enhance your oral health, offering long-term solutions tailored to your unique requirements.

Surgical Orthodontics

Oral surgery for orthodontics is a specialized field that assists in correcting dental and facial irregularities to improve function and aesthetics. It often involves minor surgical procedures to prepare the mouth for orthodontic devices, ensuring that teeth align correctly and efficiently. Whether it’s exposing unerupted teeth or placing temporary anchorage devices, oral surgery complements orthodontic treatments for optimal results. As a trusted oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, we work closely with your orthodontist and dental team to address severe cases involving jaw bone abnormalities, bite problems, and issues that affect jaw alignment.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting may be required to address defects in a patient’s jaw. Bone grafting is a form of reconstructive surgery that helps to generate and rebuild bone and increase bone density. Bone grafting is a specialized procedure designed to restore and regenerate bone tissue in areas where it has deteriorated. This process is crucial for patients who need dental implants whose jawbone lacks sufficient bone structure. By using advanced techniques and bone grafting materials, we rebuild the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for implants that mimic natural teeth in both function and appearance. Dental implants are the preferred replacement method for missing teeth because they are firmly anchored in the jaw and restore full functionality — but successful placement requires sufficient bone structure at the implant site.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are removed only if they are deemed potentially problematic. There are several reasons a wisdom tooth might be labeled as problematic. Factors that determine whether or not wisdom teeth must be removed include jaw size, crowding, proper occlusion, and impaction. Often, radiographs taken at regular dental cleaning appointments will show when wisdom teeth extraction is recommended.

Dental Implants

The best solution to replace missing teeth, dental implant surgery can simulate the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. Implants can help preserve the health of neighboring teeth, maintain bone structure, contribute to an improved ability to chew, and provide patients with the confidence to smile. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, typically made from a titanium post, that are placed into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge. These three parts work together to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, allowing for a new smile that looks and feels completely natural. Implants provide a stable foundation and security, enabling you to eat, speak, and enjoy life without worry. This treatment can completely transform your self esteem.

Amazing staff and an amazing doctor! I was really nervous about my procedure, but everyone took such great care of me. They were understanding, patient, and made me feel as comfortable as possible from start to finish. The IV went in so smoothly that I didn’t even feel the pinch.
