Our surgeons at Metropolitan Eye Center have performed over 20,000 cataract procedures since 1985. We specialize in the No Stitch, No Patch technique that requires minimum sedation. The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure within our building at Lakeshore Eye Surgery Center and often takes only fifteen minutes or less to perform. We pride ourselves in having the most advanced diagnostic technology available to help us provide the best surgical outcomes. This is particularly important in determining how you want to see after your cataract procedure. Your natural lens that develops the cataract will be replaced by an artificial Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL). You and your surgeon will have a personal conversation about your postoperative vision preferences. Some patients don’t mind continuing wearing glasses while others want to take advantage of the opportunity to see near, intermediate and distant without dependence on glasses or contact lenses. After a thorough examination and review of your diagnostic tests, our surgeon will suggest the IOL best suited for you. Currently, we offer standard IOLs, multifocal IOLs (Vivity and Synergy Multifocal), and Toric IOLs (AcrySof Toric and Tecnis Toric). We also offer the Light Adjustable Lens that is the first and only IOL that is adjusted after implant, to give the patient vision customized specifically for them. Basic cataract surgery is mostly covered by Medicare along with a standard IOL. Premium IOLs have an out-of-pocket cost.

One of the most popular ways to correct vision is with a procedure called LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis), which uses a laser to change the curvature of the cornea (outer window of the eye). Lasik eye surgery Detroit has quickly become the procedure of choice for most patients because they recover quickly and have fewer side effects and complications than with other methods of vision correction. In fact, most LASIK patients notice a significant improvement in their vision soon after surgery. LASIK surgery, eye surgery Detroit removes tissue within the cornea to treat low to high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. To treat nearsightedness, the steep cornea is made flatter by removing tissue from the center of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina. To treat farsightedness, the flat cornea is made steeper by removing tissue outside of the central optical zone of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from behind the retina to directly on the retina. To treat astigmatism, the cornea is made more spherical — like a basketball instead of a football. This eliminates multiple focusing points within the eye and creates one point of focus on the retina. Astigmatism can be treated at the same time as nearsightedness and farsightedness. LASIK is for those who: want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts are at least 18 years of age have had a stable eye prescription for at least one year have no health issues affecting their eyes have no signs of glaucoma or cataracts What to expect on surgery day: You will arrive at the laser center about an hour prior to your procedure. Once you have been checked in you may be offered a sedative to help you relax. You will then be prepared for surgery. The area around your eyes will be cleaned and a sterile drape may be applied around your eye. Anesthetic eye drops will be used to numb your eyes; no injections or needles will be used. When your eye is completely numb, an eyelid holder will be placed between your eyelids to keep you from blinking during the procedure. The area around your eyes will be cleaned and a sterile drape may be applied around your eye To make the corneal flap, the IntraLase FS Laser, the laser beam is focused into a tiny spot of energy that passes harmlessly through the outer layers of the cornea until reaching its exact focal point within the central layer of the cornea, and your doctor will gently fold the flap out of the way. During this process, you may feel a little pressure, but no pain. You will then be asked to look directly at a target light while the laser reshapes your cornea. The Excimer laser will be programmed with the information gathered in your pre-operative exam. The laser treatment will be completed in less than a minute or two, depending on the amount of correction needed. To finish the procedure, the protective layer will be folded back into the place where it will bond without the need for stitches. Following your procedure, your eye(s) will be examined with a slit lamp microscope. Then you will be given additional eye drops, and your eyes may be shielded for protection. Your vision will probably be a little blurry at first, so someone will need to drive you home. You should relax for the rest of the day. You may experience some discomfort for 12 to 24 hours, but this is usually alleviated with an over-the-counter pain reliever. Some people experience sensitivity to light, and watering or swelling of their eyes for a few days following their procedure. You will be asked to come back the next day for another examination of your eye(s). Most people can actually see well enough to drive the next day but it’s best not to drive until you have been examined. You should be able to resume your normal activities the day after surgery. Vision can fluctuate for up to six months, but most people can see well enough to pass a driver’s license vision exam following their procedure. Realistic expectations: The decision to have LASIK is an important one that only you can make. The goal of any refractive surgical procedure is to reduce your dependence on corrective lenses. However, we cannot guarantee you will have the results you desire. The vast majority of our patients are extremely happy with their vision after Lasik eye surgery in Detroit and can do most activities without dependence on corrective lenses.

Glaucoma is a disease that can steal your vision if not detected and treated early. It is generally caused by elevated pressure within the eye (Intra-Ocular Pressure or IOP) that will eventually damage the delicate optic nerve at the back of the eye causing loss of vision and eventually blindness. Initially, eye drop medication is prescribed to reduce the elevated pressure within the eye. However, many patients forget to use their drops and drops are not always effective at reducing pressure. Once we determine you are at risk, we will create a schedule for monitoring your IOP based on your unique situation. Patients that have difficulty achieving good IOP control will need more frequent check-ups. Other patients with stable IOP and a low risk of glaucomatous progression may only need to be checked annually or semiannually. We use the latest in glaucoma diagnostic technology on each of our glaucoma patients. This technology includes the automated Humphrey Visual Field analyzer with STAT-PAC, as well as nerve fiber layer analysis with the Heidelberg Spectralis SD-OCT. For patients who do not have stable IOP, we offer surgical procedures such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), surgical trabeculectomy, and laser Iridotomy that can often reduce or eliminate the need for topical or oral glaucoma medications.

Metropolitan Eye Center has been serving families in Metro Detroit for many generations. Our eye care patients range from pre-teens who need well eye exams, eyeglasses or contact lenses up to seniors for their aging eye conditions and everyone in between. Our initial diagnostic procedures such as the Optomap Retinal Eye Exam and the Icare tonometer, that is used to check the pressure in the eye without the “puff” of air, are patient-friendly for all ages and are done at most eye exam appointments. Surgical procedures that are done here in our facility include LASIK vision correction, femtosecond laser cataract surgery, and blepharoplasty. We continually invest in the most state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical equipment. We’re committed to providing the most advanced care available. Shorepointe Optical Studio carries top quality frames for adults, teens, and children using lenses that are made to fit the patient’s individual needs.
