Extremely disappointed with my experience at LensCrafters in Southfield, MI under Dr. Dawn Caldwell. I purchased colored contact lenses and was never properly informed that my vision would likely be blurry simply because they were color lenses. After wearing them, the vision quality was terrible to the point that I could barely read text messages on my phone without the words appearing layered, distorted, and surrounded by glare.
When I returned seeking help, the front desk staff — with the exception of one employee — showed very little empathy or concern about the situation. Instead of treating this like a legitimate vision problem, the overall attitude felt dismissive and transactional.
What makes this even worse is that I was told I had to purchase a 6-month supply instead of being offered the option to order a single trial pair first. This entire issue could have easily been avoided if proper trial lenses had been provided before pushing a large purchase. I later learned that trial pairs are commonly supposed to be part of the fitting process, but that was either skipped or poorly explained in my case.
Instead, I spent a significant amount of money on contacts that do not provide clear vision, only to be told afterward that blurry vision is “normal” with colored contacts. That is something that absolutely should have been disclosed BEFORE the sale — not after refusing to help or refund the purchase.
To make matters worse, when I attempted to resolve the issue, I was told I would also be charged for another reexamination, and the soonest appointment available to even evaluate why the lenses were not working properly was over a week out. So after already paying for lenses that do not work correctly, I’m expected to wait another week and pay additional money just to address a problem that should have been handled properly from the beginning.
This entire experience felt far more sales-driven than patient-focused. For a company specializing in vision care, I expected honesty, transparency, proper fitting procedures, and a willingness to stand behind the products being sold.
At this point, I will be pursuing this matter further through the Better Business Bureau and other appropriate consumer protection authorities because the handling of this situation has been extremely unprofessional. I strongly recommend that anyone considering colored contacts at this location demand trial pairs first and avoid committing to large supply purchases upfront.

Highly DON’T recommend. I’ve been going here for years (8+). I missed one appointment called and told them I had another appointment that ran over and they said they could no longer schedule an appointment and I’d be treated as a walk in and you know with kids that doesn’t work. I really hate to find another eye doctor but that’s a ridiculous policy to have especially since I called to explain and they have plenty of appointments available on their site. They rather lose 4 customers than to make an accommodations to reschedule a customer for another time.
Taking your child to an optometrist for an eye exam is the best way to learn if your child needs glasses. Many children who need glasses aren’t aware that they do. Signs of vision problems in children include sitting too close to the television, squinting, sensitivity to light, difficulty with eye-hand coordination, and avoiding visual activities like reading and drawing. To see if your child needs glasses, schedule your child’s eye exam today.
Is a contact lens exam different than an eye exam?
A normal, comprehensive eye exam will allow your optometrist to determine if your eyes are healthy enough to wear contact lenses. During your contact lens fitting, detailed measurements of your eyes will be taken to determine the right contact lenses for you. There is an additional fee for a contact lens fitting and evaluation for all contact lens patients (both new and established patients). Schedule your eye exam today to have all of your questions about contact lenses answered.
What is the difference between an eye exam and a vision screening?
A comprehensive eye exam is administered by an optometrist and can detect not only vision problems but problems with eye health and general health as well. A vision screening is typically performed by a general medical practitioner such as a pediatrician or a nurse. While a vision screening can help identify vision issues, it can miss many important issues that a comprehensive eye exam can identify. This is why everyone is encouraged to get annual eye exams. Schedule your eye exam today!
Why should I get an eye exam?
An annual eye exam involves more than just updating your glasses or contact prescription. A comprehensive eye exam can also detect eye health issues as well as general health problems. Conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected in early stages through an eye exam, and this can result in early treatment. Schedule your annual eye exam today.
What should I bring to my eye exam?
You should bring your vision insurance and medical insurance information to your eye exam. If you currently wear any prescription lenses, bring your eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. You should also bring any and all questions you may have. Contact your optometrist if you have specific questions about any additional items you think you may need to bring to your eye exam.
