  My husband is on hospice care from Gilchrist at the assisted living facility where he lives in Towson. I am very unimpressed by what I have seen in the two months he has been on it. The hospice nurse did not pick up that he had a UTI. His paid private caregiver was the one who realized that. Gilchrist was of no help when I asked them to help speed up the order for an antibiotic. But they gladly offered to give him Morphine which I have forbidden them to do without my personal permission. He is not in any pain and has no difficulty breathing; therefore, there is absolutely no need for Morphine. They got him what they say is a hospital bed but it’s not; it is a glorified mediocre cot! When I called the nurse’s hotline at Gilchrist last night to ask about the results of some tests taken 5 days ago, they had no information on those and said they couldn’t provide any updates until Monday morning because his “care team” is off for the weekend. So 3 or 4 extra days of no treatment for his current infection. He doesn’t meet the qualifications for hospice care but two doctors had what they call the “end of life discussion” where they alleged he had less than 6 months to live (an unfounded determination) and he was put on hospice care, Most people don’t know this but Medicare reimburses a doctor who has one of these discussions with a patient’s family. A doctor gets approximately $150 from Medicare just for opining that the patient will be dead in less than 6 months. My husband has dementia and can live for years even in the very last stage of it so this is an invalid assumption. The government is currently investigating hospice fraud in at least 25 states. That should tell you all you need to know about Gilchrist.

  I highly recommend this facility. My father spent his remaining days here. I can't express enough gratitude for the staff, their support, kindness, professionalism and experience. I dont have much family to rely on for support, but not once did I feel alone or lost throughout the process, and that is a beautiful thing! I also did not feel that my dad was left alone at times that I couldn't be by his side. The staff kept me well informed as he progressed through the stages. The facility itself was also very nice and well kept, and was very peaceful to be in. I loved the birds, I know my dad would have loved them too.

  My dad spent 5 days here on respite. The staff was very kind and attentive! My dad really enjoyed the food, which was nice because he did not eat very much at home. He had a beautiful room, looking out onto a courtyard. Deer visited nearby every day. It was clean and bright, and we are so thankful for the time he spent there.

  My brother was gravely ill and we chose Gilchrist Towson for him to spend his final days at. The care he recieved was beyond excellent. From the administrative to the medical and nursing aspects of his stay there I only encountered excellence. And if I may give an example of how they went far above normal expectations, my brother had left a cane that was decorated by a lady friend back at his previous stay at Hopkins. Can you believe a nurse got on the phone and tracked this item down and had it commuted to my brother at Gilchrist from Hopkins? He was so grateful. And when my brother did pass away a social worker not only gave me documentation for my bereavement leave at work but set in motion the means for my brother to donate his remains. If Gilchrist was so excellent in these peripheral aspects of their care can you imagine their actual medical care of their patients? Gilchrist I can only say thank you for taking care of my brother. I highly recommend you to the community.

  My brother recieved Gilchrist hospice care while he was at Lorien Encore and received excellent care from Encore and Gilchrist until his last breath.
