Do NOT go here if pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
I signed up while 22 weeks pregnant. At no point when I registered did Club Pilates disclose their policy that pregnant people can only attend Level 1 classes- that I would pay full price but only be allowed to access half the class offerings.
This policy is extremely paternalistic and violates the bodily autonomy of pregnant women. Corporate should eliminate it, and Silver Spring should be ashamed of itself for enforcing it. Trust women to know what is best for their bodies and babies. Do not police what classes they can and cannot attend.
The studio manager said it was a “liability” to take a level 2.0 class. She also told me that I was required to use a wedge under my back- that this accommodation was mandatory for women in the second trimester. My doctor said it was safe to lie on my back for core exercises unless I felt discomfort. I should be allowed to listen to my doctor and my body- not some random Pilates studio manager.
Pregnant women are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Is Club Pilates policing its attendees with disabilities? Or does it trust them to know their limitations and what’s best for their bodies? If a person walks in with a visible disability, are they told to “stick to level one” classes? Are they called a liability? Pilates was invented as a tool to help strengthen ALL bodies. That includes pregnancy.
The CDC recommends 150 minutes a week of vigorous activity for healthy pregnant women. There’s no reason why pregnant women can’t continue to do Level 1.5 or 2 classes in pregnancy if they did them prior to conception (I did).
The worst part of the experience was how unwelcoming the instructors were when I disclosed my pregnancy. Marcia started class 4 minutes late, didn’t ask about injuries & was then upset with me because “I should have told her I was pregnant.” (It’s the instructor’s job to provide space to disclose conditions. If you show up late & don’t ask…). She also ended class early despite starting it late. Anita told me, “we really don’t want pregnant people in level 1.5." (Also started class late).
My experience attending a level 1 class: Instructor was 5 min late (studio manager started class on her behalf). I was told I couldn’t participate unless I used a wedge. I accepted the wedge. At one point instructor cued bridges with feet on foot bar. When I began the move, she called my name out publicly and told me to use the gray bar instead. That’s right- I was required to modify in the level 1 class that was supposed to be “safe” for me. The instructor also violated my privacy by announcing modifications for pregnancy when I didn’t ask for them. I was mortified, ashamed and pissed because I’m fully capable of deciding what my body is and is not capable of. This class also lasted 45 minutes instead of the scheduled 50.
Only bright spot was Zachary. I felt consistently welcome and empowered in his classes. I also enjoyed the intro class with Kendra.
Other concerns-
1. I went to a Saturday 1 PM class and the instructor (Vivian) never showed up. They cancelled all classes for the whole Saturday.
I ended up eating the cost of my last few credits because I felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome in the space. I'm super disappointed because my hope was to do pilates all through third tri & post partum and this studio is walking distance from my house.
If you’re pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, there are other studios in the DMV that explicitly encourage pregnant women to participate and post recommended modifications on their website. Opt for one of these!!! They will make you feel more welcome and not like a “liability."
Club Pilates Silver Spring-- if you're reading this-- TRUST WOMEN TO KNOW THEIR OWN BODIES. People should always come before corporations-- if corporate policies are making people feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, maybe it's time to revisit them.

I have been taking classes at the Silver Spring Club Pilates for a few years and look forward to continuing to reap the benefits and results from attending. The staff is courteous and well trained, the facility is well maintained, and I receive a great workout on the machines that provide resistance training without the need for the bulkiness of weights. Every part of my body is challenged and the results have shown that I am much stronger and flexible than with any other form of workout.

I absolutely loved this Pilates reformer suspend class! The instructor was knowledgeable, encouraging, and attentive to form, which made the class challenging while still feeling accessible. I got a great full-body workout and really felt the difference afterward. The studio had a welcoming atmosphere, and the class was the perfect balance of strength, flexibility, and control. Recommend Club Pilates to anyone who wants to get chiseled and develop core strength.

I had arthroscopic surgery done on my right knee 2+ years ago, minor scoliosis, incredibly tight hamstrings. And this past summer, I had some swelling and pain that flared up again in my right knee. My doctor told me to go do more physical therapy and to do Pilates because the workout can really isolate particular muscle groups, build strength, and increase mobility, without putting much pressure on your back.
After nearly a dozen 1:1 sessions over the last 6 weeks and doing some of the exercises at home, I am seeing the most improvement I have seen in years in both my mobility, stretching my knee, and my core. As a guy in my late 30s who did a lot of basketball, volleyball, and some swimming growing up, this is the best workouts I have done as an adult hands down. I highly, highly recommend!
