I took my elderly mother with impaired gait (uses a cane) and intermittent episodes of vertigo in for an appointment with Kurt Malkemes, DPM.
Upon arrival, the Dr was discussing resolving EPIC issues with a front desk staffer. The Dr looked at me a few times while conversing with the staffer and at no point said “Hello, excuse us, we’ll be with you shortly…” After almost 5 minutes the Dr left and the staffer (w/ short blonde hair& a septum ring)looked at me and said, “thanks for your patience.” That is a statement made AFTER informing a patient and/or their designated care provider that you’ll require them to wait a few minutes for assistance. Both the Dr and staffer ignored me (us) and continued their conversation like I (we) were invisible.
Next, I’m helping my mother with the digital paperwork on the tablet. The short blonde hair septum ring wearing staffer begins talking loudly to an elderly patient as the elderly patient struggles with opening the door and pushing a rolling walker forward. This patient ends up stuck in the doorway, so I assist by holding the door open while the patient wheels into the seating area and thanks me. The entire time this elderly patient struggled in the doorway, the short blonde hair staffer at the front desk remained ALOOF AND SEATED. Just sat at the desk talking loudly to the elderly patient while watching the elderly patient struggle in the doorway. Zero compassion for the elderly/ physically impaired.
The waiting time was roughly 20-25 minutes. We enter the room and a staffer is sitting in the chair typing on a tablet. This staffer NEVER looks up as we’re standing RIGHT THERE in the tiny room. My mother then asks “ME,” “should I sit down now?” I respond, “I’m not sure we haven’t even been acknowledged.” FINALLY the staffer looks up and says “Hi, I’m Brittany, the Medical Assistant,” and instructs my mother on where to sit after draping the footrest, asks a few questions, then tells us the Dr will be in soon and leaves.
I go to the restroom, upon my return the Dr is reviewing a chart in preparation to enter the room my mother is in. The Dr looks at me and gives me a tight lipped smirk, but AGAIN says nothing. I enter the room, the Dr enters the room. The Dr stated their name and addresses my elderly mother by HER FIRST NAME ONLY and begins my mother’s evaluation and service. At this point, I’m thinking this will be her first and last visit.
Lastly, once the appointment is completed the short blonde hair staffer is talking (AirPod in one ear and now masked) we walk to the counter and wait. Next I hear, “these are the available dates…which one works for you?” I ask if we’re being spoken to, at no point were we acknowledged or even looked at. Their eyes were glued to the computer and an AirPod in place, appearing to be on a call.
We agree on a date and they ask about my mother’s last Dr’s visit. I ask in an “inside voice” if they’re referring to her PCP or Endocrinologist. Britney loudly states, “Your mom’s a diabetic right?!” This was a blatant HIPAA violation as other patients were also in the seating area and now know one of my mother’s diagnoses. ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. That was the final straw for me. The staff here were incredibly unprofessional on multiple levels and it starts from the top. If you do not mind the bar being on the ground, schedule your visit with the Greenbelt location.
