DermatologyCosmetic Dermatology
At Chevy Chase Dermatology, we strive not only to provide our patients with the best possible results of offered treatments, but also to make them feel valued and respected. We insist on continual education of our staff and strongly believe that staying abreast of the most recent knowledge is essential in order to give our patients the care they want and deserve. Our Medical Director, Dr. Sommerville, believes that dermatologists are uniquely trained and qualified to understand the basis of skin reaction patterns and to respond to cosmetic and medical concerns that often coexist in the same patient. Dermatologists are also trained to safely address any unforeseen complications of treatments that may rarely arise.

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections represent a truly quick and minimally-invasive treatment used most commonly for frown lines between the brows, forehead lines and for “crow’s feet”. In a skilled injector’s hands, these injections can also accomplish a noticeable but subtle lateral brow lift which leads to an attractive, rested appearance. All of this can be achieved with minimal discomfort in about 10 minutes! The lines that are treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic result from repeat muscle movements over the years. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a highly purified protein that blocks the nerve impulses reducing the movement of those muscles. With less movement, the surface of the skin gradually smoothes out as the wrinkles begin to fade. It takes up to 7 days following the injections for results to show and the effect lasts approximately 4 months for most patients. Since each patient is unique, Dr. Sommerville performs these injections after carefully assessing the involved muscles and determining the amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic to inject. Her goal is to give her patients a natural, youthful appearance while significantly reducing or eliminating the wrinkles. Dr. Sommerville does not believe in the "frozen", "over-botoxed" look that her conservative, professional clients definitely prefer to avoid. In fact, it is best to retain some movement of the muscles in order to avoid the telltale, obvious, "real housewife" from a TV show look. Another reason to choose Dr. Sommerville for your treatment is that she takes the time to personally dilute Botox powder with saline. Most patients are not aware that Botulinum toxin is sold as a powder in vials that must be diluted prior to each use. This task is relegated to support staff in most practices. By personally diluting the vial contents with saline, Dr. Sommerville ensures that the concentration is optimal for each patient, delivering long-lasting, beautiful results. Botulinum toxin injections can also be used effectively for treatment of long-standing, localized, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). The results of a single treatment in the armpits can last over 6 months.

Long term hair reduction can be achieved with intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments. Multiple treatment sessions are required spaced approximately one to two months apart depending on the area being treated, hair type and color. Touch up sessions may also be needed in the future. Patients may expect some redness, swelling and discomfort in the treated area. Rarely, blistering may occur.

How is the Fire and Ice Facial different from other facials? Fire and Ice Facial | Washington DC | Chevy Chase MDFire and Ice Facial also known as an Oscar’s favorite Red Carpet Facial by iS CLINICAL® is a hot Hollywood trend for a good reason. This intensive facial based on natural botanical ingredients bridges the gap between basic medi-spa facials and invasive chemical peels. Fire and Ice Facial provides immediate results thanks to powerful ingredients such as unbuffered glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, malic acid, and retinol. The rich, intensive, cinnamon-scented, skin warming first part of the facial is the “fire” component. It effectively exfoliates the skin reducing fine lines while smoothing, softening, and stimulating cell turnover. The briskly cooling second stage of the facial is the “ice” component which provides a soothing and hydrating treatment nourishing the skin with hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, green tea, licorice, grape seed and rosemary extracts. Fire and Ice Facial has been featured on the Doctor’s Show. InStyle magazine in 2014 has chosen it as the Celebrity Facial of the Year! How often can Fire and Ice Facial be performed? In most cases, Fire and Ice Facial can be performed monthly for a series of 5 to 6 treatments in order to reduce sun damage, rough skin texture, acne breakouts, congested pores and hyperpigmentation while restoring a healthy glow to dull skin. Is there any downtime associated with this facial? Although there may be some temporary redness immediately following the treatment, most patients do not experience any residual peeling at home. This is precisely the reason why Fire and Ice Facial is favored before major Hollywood events.
