Breast Procedures

Breast augmentation (mammaplasty) is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of women each year have this surgery to improve their appearance. Breast implants can be used to increase your breast size, restore lost volume, create greater symmetry for uneven breasts and reshape your bust line. Candidate Profile If you’re 18 years or older and feel self conscious about your breasts being too small, uneven or lacking in firmness, you may benefit from breast augmentation. Ideally, you should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the benefits and potential complications of plastic surgery. You may wish to stabilize your weight before having this operation; substantial weight loss after surgery may affect the appearance of your implants. Heavy smokers and patients with health conditions that increase the risk of side effects during or after surgery may not be the best candidates for this operation. Patient Consultation Overview During the consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will discuss your options and expectations including: The type of implant you want (saline may require a smaller incision, but many patients prefer the more natural feel of silicone) The volume of each implant (measured in cc’s) required to achieve your desired cup size The shape of the implants (round or teardrop) based on your desired breast profile Implant placement (beneath the existing breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle) How the implant will be inserted (under the breast, through the armpit or around the lower edge of the areola) If the placement of your nipples will be adjusted and whether a breast lift (mastopexy) may be needed to correct drooping Your plastic surgeon will also explore your full medical history and the potential risks and side effects of surgery. You can discuss breast augmentation costs with the patient coordinator along with payment plan options. Breast augmentation prices can vary substantially based on a number of factors unique to each patient; the total cost may be more or less than the prices you have seen on other cosmetic surgery websites. The Procedure This operation is done under general anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation to ensure your comfort and safety. The procedure may take 1 to 3 hours. The surgeon makes an incision, moves tissue aside to create a pocket and inserts the breast implant. Silicone implants are inserted pre-filled while some saline implants may have their volume adjusted after insertion. After implant placement, the incision is closed with sutures. A drainage tube may be placed to help manage fluid accumulation. This tube will be removed later. Most patients return home the same day. Recovery Following all post-procedure instructions is critical for optimal breast augmentation recovery. If you have a job that requires a lot of sitting, you may be able to return to work in less than a week with your plastic surgeon’s approval. Physical activity involving moderate lifting, pushing and pulling will be limited for some time after surgery. Resuming your normal exercise regimen may not be advised until 1 to 2 months after the operation. You should be able to return to light everyday activity such as walking, sitting and standing within a day or two after their breast enhancement procedure. You may begin showering again 3 to 7 days after surgery once the bandages are removed and your surgical incisions have begun to heal. Stitches are typically removed after about a week. Pain, breast sensitivity, skin tightness, discoloration, itching and swelling are normal side effects of this surgery. These symptoms should resolve with time. Breast augmentation scars will remain, but typically fade to become less noticeable. Potential Complications This operation carries many of the same complication risks as other types of plastic surgery. Complications that are unique to breast augmentation include: Capsular contracture (development of hard, fibrous scar tissue around the implant) Rippling or unevenness of the skin over the implant Implant shifting out of position Implant rupture and deflation A dissatisfactory outcome that may call for revision Changes in breast and nipple sensation (which may be permanent) Difficulty obtaining clear mammogram images Inability to breastfeed Results Many patients report greater satisfaction with their appearance and more self confidence after receiving breast implants. You should choose a plastic surgeon with appropriate credentials and a substantial amount of experience to increase the likelihood of a satisfactory result.

Breast Lift Details A breast lift, known as mastopexy, raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. It can also help in cases where the areola becomes enlarged over time or where a patient may have lost a significant amount of breast volume. In such cases, breast implants in conjunction with a breast lift can achieve breast enlargement at the same time as the shape and position of the breasts are enhanced. Intended results include: Higher breasts (lifted) Tighter breast envelope (increased skin tightness) Improved breast symmetry More pleasing breast shape More youthful appearance Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Call your doctor | Resources Reasons for Breast Lift Procedure A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from: Pregnancy Breastfeeding Weight fluctuations Aging Gravity Heredity What to Expect from Mastopexy Procedure Prior to scheduling a breast lift surgery, you will meet with your cosmetic surgeon for a consultation visit. Be prepared to discuss: Why you want the surgery, your expectations and desired outcome Medical conditions, drug allergies and medical treatments Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs Previous surgeries Family history of breast cancer and results of any mammograms or previous biopsies Your breast lift surgeon may also: Examine your breasts and take detailed measurements of their size and shape, skin quality, placement of your nipples and areolas Take photographs for your medical record Discuss the use of anesthesia during your breast lift Prior to surgery, you may be asked to: Get lab testing or medical evaluation Take certain medications or adjust current medications Get a baseline mammogram before surgery and another one after surgery to help detect any future changes in your breast tissue Stop smoking well in advance of plastic surgery Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding Anesthesia. Although local anesthesia may be used, general anesthesia is generally administered. With general anesthesia, you will be asleep. With local anesthesia, the selected area will be numbed. Description of the procedure. A common method of lifting the breasts involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision is horizontal beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease. After your plastic surgeon has removed excess breast skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which in a sagging breast may have been stretched, can be reduced in size. Skin that was formerly located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it to reshape the breast. The nipples and areolas remain attached to underlying tissue, which usually preserves sensation and the ability to breastfeed. Variations to breast-lifting techniques. There are many variations to the design of the incisions for breast lift surgery. The size and shape of your breasts, size of your areolas and the extent of sagging are factors that will help your cosmetic surgeon determine the best technique for you. In some instances, it may be possible to avoid the horizontal incision beneath the breast. Sometimes a technique may be used that avoids this horizontal incision, as well as the vertical incision that runs from the bottom edge of the areola to the breast crease. If you are a good candidate for a modified technique, your doctor will discuss this with you. If you and your breast enhancement surgeon have decided that it is desirable to have a breast enlargement at the same time, this will require breast implants. He/she will review the necessary information with you and may provide you with a brochure on breast augmentation. Closing the incisions. After your breasts are reshaped and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed. Some incision lines resulting from breast lift are concealed in the natural breast contours; however, others are visible on the breast surface. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade significantly over time. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape may be used to close the skin. How long will it take? About one to three hours. How much will it hurt? Anesthesia prevents pain during surgery. You may have some bruising and tenderness of the breasts for several weeks after your cosmetic surgery. Talk to your plastic surgeon about medicine to help manage the pain.

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) is a plastic surgery procedure that decreases the size of the breast by removing unwanted fat, glandular tissue, and skin. Women with very large breasts are most likely to request this procedure. However, a less extensive version of breast reduction called “gynecomastia surgery” is becoming increasingly popular among men who have excess breast tissue. Candidate Profile If you’re a woman with breasts that are disproportionately large or asymmetrical, you may be a candidate for this surgery. Ideally, you should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the benefits and risks associated with cosmetic surgery. If you’re not at or near your ideal weight, your surgeon may recommend a weight loss program prior to this operation to minimize the amount of fatty tissue that must be surgically removed. Patients who smoke or have a health condition that could increase the risk of surgical side effects may not be the best candidates for this procedure. Patient Consultation Overview Your plastic surgeon will need to know your treatment goals. For example, you might be seeking this procedure to relieve one or more of the following symptoms: Back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts Difficulty maintaining correct posture due to being “front heavy” Chronic yeast infections or other rashes under your breasts Breasts that are not the same cup size Drooping caused by age or as a result of pregnancy/breastfeeding Persistent irritation or grooves caused by bra straps Your cosmetic surgeon will review your entire medical history and walk you through the potential risks and side effects of the operation. In some cases, reduction mammaplasty is considered medically necessary rather than cosmetic. You’ll need to discuss your case with your surgeon and your insurance provider to find out whether any of your breast reduction costs may be covered by insurance. Breast reduction prices can vary depending on the extent of the surgery, whether both breasts will be reduced, and whether additional procedures such as a breast lift will be done at the same time. The Breast Reduction Procedure This procedure may be done under either general or local anesthesia depending on the surgeon’s assessment of the nature of the operation and your specific medical profile. This procedure may take 2 to 4 hours. The surgeon typically makes an incision around the areola, down to where the breast meets the rib cage, and along the breast crease. This is where your breast reduction scars will be. The surgeon will remove skin, fat, and breast tissue as needed to reduce and reshape the breast. Liposuction may be used for fat removal. The nipple and areola may need to be repositioned to provide a normal appearance. The incisions are sutured closed and small tubes may be placed temporarily to drain excess fluid. You may be fitted with a special surgical bra or compression bandages to aid healing. Breast Reduction Recovery Some patients go home the same day while others must remain in the hospital for several days. Drains are removed after about three days and sutures are removed after 7 to 10 days. Tenderness, swelling, and bruising are normal side effects that should resolve over time. Your surgeon will let you know when you can resume regular activities. If your breast reduction recovery goes well, this may be just a few weeks. Potential Complications from Breast Reduction Surgery This operation carries many of the same complication risks as other types of plastic surgery. Potential complications that are unique to breast reduction include: Asymmetrical or unsatisfactory results requiring revision Changes in breast and nipple sensation (which may be permanent) Tissue death of any portion of the breast due to insufficient blood supply Fluid- or blood-filled cysts (hard lumps) that develop during the healing process Possible inability to breastfeed Limited arm and/or shoulder movement after surgery Breast Reduction Results Many patients who have breast reduction surgery experience significant, ongoing relief from backache and posture problems. Many patients report that they feel more comfortable engaging in physical activity and sports. They also feel less self-conscious about their appearance and have an easier time finding well-fitting clothing. What Is Gynecomastia? Gynecomastia is enlargement of the breasts in men. It is relatively common, occurring in about one-third of men. About 65 percent of boys develop some degree of breast enlargement during puberty. This is normal and usually goes away by age 18. The breast tissue is firm in men with gynecomastia. In contrast, the breast tissue is soft in men with fat on their chests, hence looking like enlarged breasts (fatty enlargement of the breasts). Causes | Risk factors | Symptoms | Diagnosis | Prevention | Resources | References Causes Of Gynecomastia Men normally produce much more male hormones (androgens) than female hormones (estrogens). Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance in the female and male hormones. The hormone imbalance can be caused by: Aging Testosterone deficiency Certain medications, such as digoxin (a heart medication), spironolactone (a diuretic), cimetidine (a medication for stomach conditions) and many others Anabolic steroids used to enhance athletic performance in sports Marijuana use Liver or kidney failure Chronic kidney disease Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) Tumors of the testicles, lung, stomach, liver, kidney or pituitary gland Gynecomastia Risk Factors A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition. By definition, only men can get gynecomastia. Risk factors: Age: over 50 Obesity Excess alcohol consumption leading to liver cirrhosis Chronic liver or kidney disease Presence of a condition or medication that decreases androgen or estrogen production Family history Symptoms Of Gynecomastia Symptoms of gynecomastia include: Enlargement of the breasts with firm tissue, usually on both sides Tenderness How Is Gynecomastia Diagnosed? Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history, and perform a physical exam. You may need to be referred to a doctor who specializes in hormone disorders (an endocrinologist). Your doctor will be especially interested in other symptoms you have had and your use of medications. He/she will focus on your weight, breast exam, testicular exam and any other signs of a hormone problem. Diagnostic tests may include: Blood sample — to check the function of your liver, thyroid and kidneys, as well as other hormone levels Ultrasound — a test that uses sound waves to examine the breasts CT scan — a type of x-ray that uses a computer to make pictures of the breasts Biopsy — if the diagnosis or cause remains unclear, a sample of breast tissue may be removed and sent to a pathology laboratory for evaluation Treatment For Enlarged Male Breasts Usually, treatment for gynecomastia is not needed. However, it is important to find and treat the underlying cause of the gynecomastia. For example, if you are taking a medication that causes gynecomastia, your doctor will ask you to discontinue it or change to a different medication if possible. It is particularly important to exclude tumors as a cause of gynecomastia, and, if one is found to be present, to treat it. If treatment of gynecomastia is needed, medications are sometimes used, though they can produce unwanted side effects. On rare occasions, gynecomastia surgery by a plastic surgeon is used to remove breast tissue. Can Gynecomastia Be Prevented? Prevention of gynecomastia requires avoiding known risk factors. Thus, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, avoiding steroids and refraining from marijuana use will prevent gynecomastia from those sources. Body Procedures

Liposuction is an elective surgical procedure. It reshapes the body through the removal of excess body fat. Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Call your doctor | Resources | References Reasons for Liposuction Procedure Some common reasons for choosing to have liposuction surgery include: Reshaping the body so that it is more in tune with an individual’s ideal body image Removing unwanted fat pockets that could not be lost with diet and exercise Boosting self-confidence and feelings about appearance Reducing the chest size of males suffering from gynecomastia (enlarged breasts) Removing fatty deposits known as lipomas Liposuction cosmetic surgery results are not the same for everyone. Some factors that may affect results include: Age — Older patients may not see the same results as younger patients because their skin is less elastic Experience of the doctor — Plastic surgeons with more experience tend to have fewer problems Some factors that may increase the risk of complications from lipo include: Diabetes Smoking Severe heart or lung disease Taking certain medicines Poor blood circulation Recent surgery in the area to be suctioned Having a large area suctioned, or large amounts of fat removed What to expect from Liposuction Prior to procedure. Your plastic surgeon will likely: Evaluate you as a candidate for liposuction surgery: Ask about your medical history, illnesses, medicines, drug allergies and previous surgeries You may be asked to stop taking some medicines (including herbal supplements) up to one week before the procedure like: Aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs Blood thinners, such as clopidogrel (Plavix) or warfarin (Coumadin) Discuss previous weight losses/gains and how they affected your body Have you identify the areas you would like to have suctioned Test your skin elasticity (ability of the skin to stretch and return to normal) Estimate the amount of fat needed to be removed for best results Discuss your ideal surgical outcome and body image versus realistic expectations Determine your emotional stability (after plastic surgery, some patients tend to become depressed temporarily) Discuss the different types of liposuction available Prepare you for the procedure by: Discussing surgical techniques and anesthesia options Giving you instructions Addressing your questions and concerns Leading up to your liposuction cosmetic procedure: Refrain from smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding diet Arrange for a ride and for help at home The night before, eat a light meal; do not eat or drink anything after midnight If advised by your cosmetic surgeon, take a shower in the morning or the night before the procedure; you may need to use special antibacterial soap Anesthesia. There are two anesthesia options for liposuction surgery. Your doctor will help you to decide which is best for you. Local anesthesia — This numbs the area. You will be awake during the procedure. General anesthesia — You will be asleep during the procedure. Description of procedure. After anesthesia has taken effect, a special fluid containing saline (salt water), additional anesthetic, adrenalin (to minimize bleeding) and bicarbonate (to minimize pain from injection) will be injected into the fatty areas. One of the following three extraction techniques will be used: Wet technique — The amount of fluid injected is less than the amount of fat to be removed. Super wet technique — The amount of fluid injected is equal to the amount of fat removed. Tumescent technique — Three times as much fluid is injected to the body as fat removed. After the fluid is added, a small incision will be made near the area to be suctioned. In traditional liposuction, the lipo plastic surgeon will use an instrument called a cannula to suction the fat. A cannula is a hollow tube, like a drinking straw. A vacuum pressure unit, which is attached by a hose to the cannula, will provide the suction for the procedure. Once fat has been removed, the incisions may be sutured closed or left open to drain. The following are different types of liposuction surgery available: Power-assisted liposuction — This involves the use of a vibrating cannula that disrupts the fat cells prior to their removal. The technique is especially useful in areas where the fat is more difficult to remove or in areas previously liposuctioned. Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) — This involves the use of ultrasound energy provided via a probe under the skin. The fat cells are disrupted and the fat is then removed by traditional liposuction. There may be a reduction in bleeding and swelling and an increase in skin tightening with this procedure.

A thigh and buttock lift reshapes the thighs and buttocks by reducing excess skin, and in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body. Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Call your doctor | Resources Reasons for procedure If fitness and weight loss efforts have not achieved your goals for a body that is firmer, more youthful looking and more proportionate to your overall body image, a surgical thigh or buttock lift may be right for you. A thigh and buttock lift tightens loose, sagging skin in the buttocks, thighs and hips, and improves the appearance of dimpled skin. What to expect Prior to procedure. Prior to butt lift surgery, your doctor may ask you to: Get lab testing or a medical evaluation Take certain medications or adjust your current medications Stop smoking well in advance of surgery Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding Anesthesia. Thigh and buttock lift cosmetic surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and you will be put to sleep with an intravenous sedative. After you are asleep, a breathing tube will be placed in your mouth to ensure that the airway is secure during the position changes necessary during the procedure. Description of the procedure. Incision patterns vary based on the area or areas to be treated, degree of correction, and patient and cosmetic surgeon preference. One common technique places incisions in the groin, extending downward and wrapping around the back of the thigh. The underlying tissue will be reshaped, and tightened, and skin will be reduced and redraped, resulting in more proportionate and smoother body contours. Lifting the entire thigh and buttock will require much longer incisions that start in the buttock crease, extend around the groin, come up over the side of the abdomen and reach over the flank and across the back. Deep support sutures within underlying tissues help to form the newly shaped contours. Sutures close the skin incisions. How long will it take? About two to four hours. How much will it hurt? Anesthesia prevents pain during plastic surgery. Pain following a thigh and buttock lift is typically controlled by oral pain medications. The first day of surgery, you may require injections or intravenous pain medications, but usually pain pills relieve discomfort after that. Average hospital stay. Buttock and thigh lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Depending on the size of your lift, you may leave the hospital on the same day of the procedure or spend one or two nights in a skilled nursing facility or hospital. Postprocedure care. After your thigh and buttock lift: Dressing or bandages may be applied to your incisions Compression garments may be placed to control swelling, support the suspended tissues, and smooth and flatten the skin One or more small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain excess fluid or blood that may collect Sutures in the incision closure may require removal Activity is determined by the progress of the healing of the incision You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site(s) following surgery Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health When to follow up with your plastic surgeon Call your doctor After arriving home, contact your cosmetic surgeon if any of the following occur: Signs of infection, including fever and chills Persistent high temperature Redness, swelling, increasing pain, bleeding or discharge from the incision site Opening of any part of the incision Any other problem or concern In case of an emergency, call 911. Possible complications. Complications are rare but no plastic surgery procedure is completely free of risk. If you are planning to have a thigh and buttock lift, your doctor will review a list of possible complications, which may include: Unfavorable scarring Bleeding (hematoma) Infection Fluid accumulation Skin loss

Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles to create a smoother and firmer abdominal profile. How much does a tummy tuck cost? Learn more about tummy tuck costs as well as pricing for other plastic surgery procedures here at UMass Memorial Cosmetic Surgery Center in Worcester, MA. We also serve Boston, Cape Cod, and surrounding areas. Financing is also available for tummy tucks and other cosmetic surgery procedures. Tummy tuck testimonial Hear from Kara about her tummy tuck Reasons for a tummy tuck procedure | Candidates for a tummy tuck | What to expect from a tummy tuck | Tummy Tuck Resources | Plastic Surgery Resources Reasons for a tummy tuck procedure Many of us strive for a flat and well-toned abdomen through exercise and weight control. But sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop a loose or sagging abdomen that protrudes. The most common causes for this condition include: Pregnancy Aging Significant fluctuations in weight Heredity Prior surgery Candidates for a tummy tuck The ideal candidates for tummy tuck surgery are patients in relatively good physical shape, but who have excess skin or fat in the abdominal area that is resistant to exercise. This includes the laxity of underlying muscles due to pregnancy, which have stretched beyond the point where they can naturally return to their normal location and shape. What to expect from a tummy tuck consultation Prior to scheduling tummy tuck surgery, you will meet with your plastic surgeon for a consultation. Be prepared to discuss: Why you want the abdominoplasty surgery, your expectations and desired outcome from a tummy tuck Medical conditions, drug allergies and medical treatments Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs Previous surgeries Your tummy tuck surgeon may also: Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors before a tummy tuck Take photographs for your medical record Discuss your options and recommend a course of treatment after a tummy tuck Discuss likely outcomes of the abdominoplasty and any risks or potential complications Prior to a tummy tuck procedure You may be asked to: Get lab testing or a medical evaluation Take certain medications or adjust your current medications before a tummy tuck Stop smoking well in advance of, and after, tummy tuck plastic surgery Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding during tummy tuck surgery Special instructions you receive w ill cover: What to do on the day of your tummy tuck procedure The use of anesthesia during your tummy tuck Postoperative care and follow up after the tummy tuck The tummy tuck procedure A full tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision in the area between the pubic hairline and navel. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the degree of the necessary tummy tuck correction. Through this incision, weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and sutured and excess fat, tissue and skin is removed. A second incision around the navel may be necessary to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen. Sutures, skin adhesives, tapes or clips close these tummy tuck incisions. Your tummy tuck will result in a flatter, firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate with your body type and weight. The final results of the tummy tuck may be initially obscured by swelling and your inability to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete. Within a week or two, after your tummy tuck you should be standing tall and confident about your new slimmer profile. Tummy tuck variations There are many variations both to the tummy tuck technique and design of the incisions. In some instances, it may be possible to avoid an incision around the navel. When the amount of loose skin is minimal and the excess fat deposits are located below the navel, a short horizontal incision is all that is necessary during the tummy tuck. This procedure is called a partial or mini abdominoplasty. Sometimes liposuction may be used alone, or in conjunction with abdominoplasty, to remove abdominal fat during a tummy tuck cosmetic surgery procedure. Endoscopic abdominoplasty is another technique for minimizing scars and may be useful when patients have only a mild degree of excess fat and muscle laxity. Learn more about liposuction procedures in Worcester at the UMass Memorial Cosmetic Surgery Center. People who are obese may be asked to consider weight loss first before a tummy tuck procedure. This would include diet and exercise recommendations, and referral to a bariatric surgeon when appropriate. Popular weight-loss surgery procedures include lapband surgery and gastric bypass.

Face Procedures

What Is A Brow Lift? A brow lift (forehead lift) is designed to address excess skin and sagging in the upper part of the face. Often, raising the forehead skin back to a more youthful position will correct drooping in the upper eyelids as well. This is a less extensive surgery than a full face lift but can still create a significant improvement in appearance. Brow Lift Candidates If you’re over 40 and displeased with deep forehead wrinkles and a lowered brow line, you may be a candidate for this procedure. Ideally, you should be in good health and have a clear understanding of the risks, benefits and typical outcomes of the procedure. Smoking and certain medical conditions can make some patients poor candidates for plastic surgery. The Forehead Lift Consultation During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will discuss the various methods available for performing brow lift surgery. The recommended technique depends on factors such as the specific areas you need lifted to: Minimize deep horizontal wrinkles along your forehead or above the bridge of your nose Reduce vertical creases between your brows Lift a drooping brow and raise your upper eyelids Lower your hairline to reduce the appearance of a high forehead Make your brows more symmetrical The procedure type will impact the location and extent of your brow lift scars. Usually, these are hidden in the hairline. If you have significant hair loss along your brow line (or if future balding is likely), your scars may be visible. Your surgeon will thoroughly review your medical history and ensure that you’re informed about all aspects of the procedure. Brow lift prices depend on a number of factors including the extent of the surgery and if you have additional corrective procedures done at the same time. The patient coordinator can walk you through financing options to cover the brow lift cost. The Brow Lift Procedure This is typically an outpatient procedure that takes 1 to 3 hours. It’s performed with local anesthesia (often paired with conscious sedation to keep you relaxed). With a coronal brow lift, the surgeon makes an incision across the top of the head from ear to ear. This allows the surgeon to lift the forehead skin and tighten various underlying tissues as needed. A strip of skin is also removed to provide maximum lifting of the entire forehead area. In an endoscopic brow lift, several short incisions are made along the hairline to allow the surgeon to tighten targeted areas. A small fiber optic instrument called an endoscope is inserted into the incisions to help the surgeon see the muscles and connective tissue during the procedure. With either type of brow lift, permanent sutures may be inserted under the skin to lift and hold underlying structures in the desired position. External brow lift incisions may be closed with removable or dissolving sutures, clips, or surgical adhesives. A small tube may be temporarily placed to drain fluid from the incision. Results Of Brow Lift Surgery A brow lift can smooth out the forehead and raise the eyebrows and eyelids to a more youthful position. Many patients feel they look much younger and less tired after this surgery. Forehead Lift Recovery Brow lift recovery times vary depending on the type of procedure. If you have a coronal brow lift, you can expect the site to take significantly longer to fully heal. You may need to rest for a week or more before resuming normal activities. Swelling, bruising and some pain are typical side effects of this surgery. Stitches are removed in about a week and healing of the incisions can take several weeks. The final effects of the forehead lift may not be apparent for several months. Following your surgeon’s post-procedure instructions carefully is critical for the best outcome. Risks Of Forehead Lift Surgery This operation carries many of the same complication risks as other types of plastic surgery. Potential complications that are unique to brow lifts include: Hair loss along the incision lines A hairline that is too high Nerve injury causing weakness or paralysis of facial muscles Asymmetrical results requiring revision surgery Changes in sensation such as numbness, tingling or itching Sutures in the underlying tissue that cause irritation or become visible through the skin Eye irritation or dryness

“Chemical peel” uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of facial skin. There are currently three options available: alphahydroxy acids (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol. Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Possible complications | Resources Reasons To Get A Chemical Peel Men and women choose chemical peels for cosmetic reasons. They can reduce or remove facial blemishes, acne scars, uneven skin tone, and wrinkles. Chemical peels may also remove precancerous skin growths and even control acne. What To Expect From Chemical Peels Prior to the procedure. During your consultation with your doctor, you will discuss what your expectations are and any medical conditions you may have. Your doctor may pretreat the skin with: Retin A or an AHA cream to thin out the skin Hydroquinone, a bleaching agent, if you have blotchy skin You may also want to: Arrange for a ride to and from the procedure Arrange for help at home after the procedure Anesthesia. Anesthesia is not required because the chemical solution acts as an anesthetic. However, sedation may be used before and during the chemical peel to relax you and keep you comfortable. Description of the procedure. AHA peels: Your cosmetic surgeon will apply the AHA solution to your cleansed facial skin, a process that usually takes no more than ten minutes. Phenol and TCA peels: Typically, the skin is thoroughly cleansed. Then, your doctor will carefully apply the phenol or TCA solution. You may feel a stinging sensation as the peel solution is applied, but this feeling will quickly pass. A full-face TCA peel usually takes no more than 15 minutes. Two or more TCA peels may be needed to obtain the desired result. These may be spaced out over several months. Mild TCA peels may be repeated as often as every month. If phenol solution is used, your doctor may coat the treated area with petroleum jelly or waterproof adhesive tape. With lighter chemical peels, no covering is necessary. A full-face phenol peel generally takes one or two hours to perform, while a phenol peel to a smaller facial region (perhaps the skin above the upper lip) may take only 10 or 15 minutes. Chemical Peels Worcester, MA Average hospital stay. This procedure may be done in the cosmetic surgery center. It may be possible to leave the hospital or surgery center on the same day as the chemical peel. Postprocedure care. It is common to experience some temporary flaking, scaling, redness, and dryness of the skin. In addition, your face may become extremely swollen and your eyes may become swollen shut. Your doctor may prescribe mild pain medication. If tape was used to cover your face, it will be removed after a day or two. Scabbing may occur. You may be limited to a liquid diet. You may be advised to not talk often during the first days of recovery. Avoid direct sun exposure and wear sunblock. You may return to work after two weeks. Possible complications Chemical peels provided by a qualified experienced cosmetic surgeon are generally a safe procedure but are not free of risk or complications. If you are planning to have a chemical peel, your doctor will review a list of possible complications, which may include: Infection Scarring Stinging Redness Irritation Uneven pigment change Resources American Society of Plastic Surgeons https://www.plasticsurgery.org/

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, corrects protruding or disfigured ears. It can also improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Call your doctor | Resources Reasons for procedure Cosmetic ear surgery can correct a birth defect in the ear or an ear that is misshapen due to injury. It can help with a rare condition called macrotia (overly large ears), protruding ears occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees, and dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery. What to expect Prior to procedure. Be prepared to discuss why you want the plastic surgery procedure and your desired outcome. Your physician will review your current medications and allergies to medications and may also: Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors Take photographs for your medical record Discuss your options and recommend a course of treatment Discuss likely outcomes of ear surgery and any risks or potential complications Prior to otoplasty surgery, you may be asked to: Get lab testing or a medical evaluation Take certain medications or adjust current medications Stop smoking, well in advance of the cosmetic surgery procedure Avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding Anesthesia. Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include local, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will recommend the best choice for you. Description of the otoplasty procedure. Correction of protruding ears uses surgical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold (the rim of the ear) and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). Incisions for cosmetic ear surgery are generally made on the back surface of the ear. When incisions are necessary on the front of the ear, they are made within its folds to hide them. Internal, nonremovable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place. External stitches close the incision. Techniques are individualized, avoiding distortion and an unnatural “pinned back” appearance. After the procedure. Ear surgery offers almost immediate results in cases of protruding ears, and is visible when the dressings that support the new shape of the ear during healing are removed. With the ear permanently positioned closer to the head, surgical scars are either hidden behind the ear or within the natural creases of the ear. Will it hurt? Anesthesia prevents pain during surgery. Discomfort immediately following ear surgery is normal and can be controlled with pain medication. There may be an itchy feeling under bandages. It is essential that bandages remain intact and are not removed for any reason. Failure to do so may result in loss of some of the correction and may require additional surgery. Postprocedure care. At the hospital: After surgery, bandages or dressings will be applied to keep your surgical site clean, protect it from trauma and support the new position of the ear during initial healing. You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to take care of your ears following otoplasty surgery Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection When to follow up with your surgeon At home: Following your physician’s instructions is very important to the success of your plastic surgery, and your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to take care of yourself. Surgical incisions should not be subjected to excessive force, abrasion or motion during the time of healing. Make sure you attend follow-up visits as scheduled. Should any complications occur, notify your cosmetic surgeon, who will determine if any additional treatment is needed. Call your doctor After you leave the hospital, contact your doctor if any of the following occur: Signs of infection, including fever and chills Redness, swelling, increasing pain or discharge at the incision site In case of an emergency, call 911. Possible complications. Some of the risks associated with ear surgery include: Bleeding (hematoma) Blood clots Asymmetry Infection Poor wound healing Change in skin sensation Skin contour irregularities Skin discoloration/swelling Anesthesia risks Unfavorable scarring Allergies to tape, suture materials, glues, blood products, topical preparations or injected agents Pain, which may persist Resources American Society of Plastic Surgeons https://www.plasticsurgery.org/

What Is Blepharoplasty? Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is among the top five most commonly requested cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. Both men and women typically seek this procedure to combat the signs of aging. A specialized version of this surgery is also popular among Asian Americans in their 20s and 30s who want to create a crease in their upper eyelid. Candidates For Eyelid Surgery You may benefit from this procedure if you’re dissatisfied with the appearance of sagging skin or constant puffiness around your eyes. Ideally, you should be in good overall health and have realistic goals for plastic surgery – including understanding that there are risks involved. Smokers or patients who have a medical problem that increases the risk of surgical complications may not be good candidates for this procedure. If you have dry eye or other eye conditions, be sure to tell your surgeon. The Eyelid Surgery Consultation Correction can be done on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both depending on what you perceive as your problem areas. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss your options for tightening and smoothing the skin around your eyes along with the risks and benefits of each procedure. Typical issues patients want improved include: Skin that sags down over the crease in the upper eyelids Puffy upper eyelids Bags (sagging and/or puffy skin) under the eyes Wrinkles around the eyes In some cases, a brow lift is needed for patients who have upper eyelid sagging as the result of a drooping brow. Botox, dermal fillers and chemical peels may be recommended for rejuvenation in combination with eyelid correction for maximum results. Eyelid surgery prices vary based on the techniques used and other factors. You can discuss eyelid surgery costs with the patient coordinator to determine an affordable payment schedule. The Blepharoplasty Procedure This surgery is often done using local anesthesia as the amount of tissue being removed is small. Intravenous sedation is given to help ease discomfort and anxiety. For surgery on the upper eyelid, the plastic surgeon will typically make an incision in the crease of the eyelid that reaches to just past the outside corner of the eye. For the lower lid, the incision is often made just below the lash line or on the inside of the lid. These techniques help make eyelid surgery scars less noticeable than scars from many other types of cosmetic surgery. Excess skin is excised if necessary and fat may be removed or redistributed to restore lost volume in other areas of the eyelid. Patients are usually able to go home the same day (with someone else driving). Eyelid Surgery Results Removing sagging skin from the upper eyelids makes the eye look more open and alert. Reducing sagging and puffiness in the lower lids minimizes signs of persistent fatigue. Many patients appreciate the rejuvenating effects of eyelid surgery since it can make their whole upper face look younger. Recovery From Blepharoplasty You should be prepared to experience some blurred vision during the first few days of eyelid surgery recovery. A sensation of tightness around the eyes, sensitivity to light, dry eyes, excessive tear production, swelling and bruising are also common side effects. These should resolve over time. Resting with your head elevated and applying cold packs to your eyes can help with discomfort. Stitches are taken out after about a week. You may begin wearing makeup to cover up bruising within the first week if you’re healing well. Most patients can resume normal activities within two weeks. It takes time for the final results of eyelid surgery to become apparent. Be patient and follow your surgeon’s instructions for optimal results. Risks Of Eyelid Surgery This operation carries many of the same complication risks as other types of plastic surgery. Potential complications that are unique to blepharoplasty include: Damage to the muscles and nerves that control the eyelids Changes in eyelid sensation Persistent eye dryness or irritation Asymmetrical or unsatisfactory results requiring revision surgery

A face lift is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Call your doctor | Resources Reasons for procedure Cosmetic reasons for a face lift include: Sagging in the midface Deep creases below the lower eyelids Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth Fat that is displaced Jowls created by a loss of muscle tone in the lower face Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw What to expect Prior to rhytidectomy procedure. Your plastic surgeon may evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors. In addition, he/she may examine and measure your face and take photographs for your medical record. Leading up to your facelift procedure, your doctor may ask you to: Get lab testing or a medical evaluation Take certain medications or adjust your current medications Stop smoking, well in advance of surgery Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding Anesthesia. Medications are administered for your comfort during the face lift procedure. You and your plastic surgeon will have decided in advance what type of anesthesia is to be used — either intravenous sedation (twilight) or general anesthesia. Description of the procedure. The face lift surgery usually involves incisions in front of and behind the ear. The incisions may extend into the scalp. Once the incisions are made, various degrees of undermining of the skin are performed, and the deeper layers of the face are lifted. Muscle tightening as well as liposuction of the neck and jowls may be performed, and excess skin is either removed or repositioned. The results are a reversal of the effects of gravity and tightening of soft tissues of the face to restore a more youthful contour to the face. How long will it take? About three hours. How much will it hurt? The recovery from a face lift procedure varies greatly between individuals, however, there is generally very little discomfort after face lift surgery. Any discomfort you may experience will be controlled with pain medication as needed. Average hospital stay. You may be permitted to go home after a few hours, although some patients may stay overnight. Postprocedure care. When facelift surgery is completed: A bandage may be wrapped around your face to minimize swelling and bruising Small tubes may be inserted beneath the skin to drain fluid that may collect under the skin Straining, bending and lifting should be avoided as these activities may predispose you to bleeding Possible complications. Complications are rare but no procedure is completely risk free. If you are planning to have a face lift cosmetic surgery procedure, your doctor will review possible complications, which may include: Unfavorable scarring Bleeding (hematoma) Infection Poor wound healing Anesthesia risks Correctable hair loss at the incisions Facial nerve injury with weakness Facial asymmetry Skin loss Numbness or other changes in skin sensation Fluid accumulation Skin contour irregularities Skin discoloration, sensitivity or swelling Call your doctor After arriving home, contact your cosmetic surgeon if any of the following occur: Sudden appearance of new swelling Severe or persistent pain Fever of 100 degrees or higher may be indicative of an infection Popped stitches Abnormal discharge from the incision site (milky or pus-like in appearance) Resources American Society of Plastic Surgeons https://www.plasticsurgery.org/ American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery https://www.surgery.org/ Face Forum https://www.faceforum.com/

What Are Facial Fillers? Facial fillers, also known as injectable fillers, can plump thin lips, enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases and wrinkles, or improve the appearance of recessed scars. At the Cosmetic Surgery Center, we use Radiesse and Restylane, both Food and Drug Administration-approved facial injectable fillers. For those wishing to avoid the injection of any foreign material, lipo transfer — the harvesting and reinjection of your own fat — may be an option. Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Possible complications | Resources Reasons for procedure Facial fillers are used for cosmetic reasons. One of the earliest signs of aging is a loss of facial fullness and the development of wrinkles. Injectable fillers restore facial contours or reduce the appearance of lines and creases. What to expect Prior to procedure. During your consultation, you will discuss what your expectations are and any medical conditions you may have with your cosmetic surgeon. He/she will carefully evaluate your facial appearance and skin tone, and examine the areas of your face to be augmented with injectable fillers. Fillers derived from nonhuman sources may require a pretreatment allergy test. Anesthesia. Icing or a topical numbing agent may be offered to make more sensitive patients comfortable. In some cases, the filler itself will contain an anesthetic agent. In other cases, local anesthetic may be administered to the treatment site. Description of the procedure. Strategic points on your face may be marked as guides to the appropriate injection sites for the filler. The injection sites will be cleansed with an antibacterial agent. Injection takes only a few moments per site and a few minutes for a course of treatment. Filling wrinkles or recessed scars involves multiple injections. In most cases, you may return to work the next day. Postprocedure care. The results of facial fillers are apparent immediately. Your initial appearance after treatment with any filler may include: Occasionally dramatic swelling, especially in the lips. If you are a first-time patient, you may want to schedule the initial injection on a Friday. Bruising can occur and can be covered with makeup. It is a good idea not to schedule filler injection right before a social function. Facial injectable fillers are not permanent and, over time, lips will lose plumpness and wrinkles and creases will fully reappear. Possible complications Injectable fillers provided by a qualified experienced plastic surgeon are generally a safe procedure, but are not free of risk or complications. If you are planning to have an injectable filler cosmetic surgery procedure, your doctor will review a list of possible complications. Depending on the specific filler used, the risks will vary and may include: Infection at the injection site “Clumping” as a result of facial movement and the natural aging process can occur with fillers that are not completely fluid and contain microscopic granular substances; over time, these can result in lumps or nodules that may require surgery Acne-like skin eruptions Antibodies to filler material may reduce the effectiveness of future injections Asymmetry Bleeding, bruising and swelling Filler material may move from the original site and produce temporary paralysis of other muscle groups or other unintended effects Skin rash, itching and swelling Skin redness Skin sensitivity Under- or overcorrection of wrinkles Resources American Society of Plastic Surgeons https://www.plasticsurgery.org/

What Is Lip Augmentation? Lip augmentation is a quick, in-office procedure that creates fuller, plumper lips and reduces fine wrinkles around the mouth. It is done by injecting fillers that enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases or improve the appearance of recessed scars. These signs of aging occur over time as a result of sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle. Lip augmentation is a good option if you: Are physically healthy Do not smoke Have a positive outlook and specific but realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Call your doctor | Resources Reasons for Lip Augmentation Lip injections can: Plump thin lips Enhance shallow contours Soften and reduce facial creases and wrinkles that occur when frowning or smiling Improve the appearance of recessed scars Restore facial contours What to expect before your Lip Augmentation Prior to the procedure. A consultation with your plastic surgeon is held prior to your procedure. Be prepared to discuss why you want the lip augmentation procedure, your expectations and medical conditions. In addition, your doctor may review your health history, discuss options, take measurements and photos, and review outcomes. Anesthesia. Most doctors use a topical anesthetic cream and may also administer local anesthesia. Description of the Lip Augmentation procedure During lip augmentation, injections are done to the following areas: the outer mouth (laugh lines), edge of lip (lipstick lines) and inner lip. Your cosmetic surgeon will carefully evaluate your facial appearance and skin tone, and examine the areas of your face to be augmented. The injection sites will be cleansed with an antibacterial agent, and numbed using ice or a topical agent. Filling wrinkles or recessed scars involves multiple injections. Some fillers used are more appropriate than others for a targeted area. Injectables include two basic classes: Fillers, to restore lost volume Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, to lessen the appearance of wrinkles Fillers work by filling the lip or wrinkle with volume and are gradually digested by the body. Botox injections weaken the underlying muscles to decrease their overlying dynamic movement. Examples of fillers include collagen lip injections, hyaluronic acid, hydroxylapatite, your own fat and polymethylmethacrylate. What to expect after your Lip Augmentation Following injections, any markings will be cleansed and ice may be offered to alleviate any temporary, minor discomfort. Makeup may be carefully reapplied so long as care is taken not to apply pressure to the treatment area. The results are immediately apparent. Your initial appearance after treatment may include: Mild swelling or bruising Temporary numbness or redness An “over-filled” appearance to treated areas The results of lip augmentation are not permanent, and if treatments are not repeated, the face and lips return to the original condition. The fillers, over time, can change and may clump. Removing them surgically may be necessary to correct this condition. Patients may immediately return to normal activities after lip injections. How long will a Lip Augmentation take? A few moments per site. Will Lip Augmentation hurt? Some discomfort may occur. Post-procedure care for Lip Augmentation Mild swelling, numbness and other symptoms occurring right after treatment can be alleviated by applying ice and will improve within a matter of hours or just a few days. Where fat is used, these conditions may persist for a few weeks. Possible complications. Complications are rare, but no cosmetic surgery procedure is completely risk free. If you are planning to have lip augmentation, your plastic surgeon will review a list of possible complications, which may include: Visible lumps Clumping that may require surgery to correct Allergic reactions Minor swelling Infection at the injection site Acne-like skin eruptions Asymmetry Bleeding, bruising and swelling Temporary paralysis of other muscle groups Skin might die Skin rash, itching Skin redness Skin sensitivity Under- or overcorrection of wrinkles Reduction in the effectiveness of future injections Call your doctor After you leave the hospital, contact your doctor if any of the following occur: Signs of infection, including fever and chills Redness, swelling, increasing pain, excessive bleeding or any discharge from the injection site Pain that you cannot control with medications In case of an emergency, call 911. Commonly referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty is a surgery done to reshape the nose. Reasons for procedure | What to expect | Call your doctor | Resources | References Reasons for procedure To change or improve appearance To improve breathing To correct an injury or birth deformity To open blocked nasal passages due to a deviated septum (in conjunction with a septoplasty) What to expect Prior to procedure. You may be asked to provide a picture of the nose shape you desire. You may also be given a book to look through to choose a nose shape. Your plastic surgeon will likely do the following: Blood tests Urine tests X-rays of the facial bones EKG or chest x-ray may be also required Take “before” pictures of your nose Leading up to your nose surgery: Arrange for a ride to and from the procedure If you are having general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything for at least eight hours before the procedure Talk to your cosmetic surgeon about your medicines. You may be asked to stop taking some medicines or herbal supplements up to one week before the procedure, like: Aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs Blood thinners, such as clopidogrel (Plavix) or warfarin (Coumadin) Ginkgo biloba or others Anesthesia. You may have general or local anesthesia. You will be asleep with general anesthesia. Local will numb the area. In this case, you may also be given a sedation medicine. It will help you relax. The type of anesthesia used will depend on your procedure. Description of the procedure. There are three main components of nose surgery: Lifting the skin of the nose from the bone and cartilage. The nose will be injected with a numbing medication and epinephrine. The epinephrine will prevent excessive bleeding. An incision will be made either inside the nostril, or outside the nostril, across the ridge between the nostrils. The skin will then be lifted off the cartilage of the nose. Remodeling bone and cartilage. Depending on the desired outcome, some nasal bone may be removed, fractured and reset to a new shape. Cartilage may also be trimmed. Other techniques involve placement of tissue grafts (bone, cartilage or mucosa) from the patient or a donor, or a synthetic graft. They will be used to help remodel the shape of the nose. For example, the tip of the nose may be narrowed or raised, the slope of the nose may be reduced or increased. The shape or size of the nostrils may also be changed. Redraping skin over the new base. Once the procedure is finished, the incisions will be closed. The skin will be redraped over the new bone structure. The skin will be tightly taped to keep it in place. A protective metal splint will then be applied on the outside of the nose. It will help to maintain the positioning during healing. Either soft plastic splints or gauze packing coated with petroleum jelly will be used as nasal packs. They may also be inserted into the nostrils as support during healing. How long will it take? About two to four hours. How much will it hurt? Anesthesia prevents pain during the rhinoplasty surgery. There will be some pain for about one to four weeks after the nose job procedure. You will be given pain medication to relieve this pain. Average hospital stay. You will most likely go home on the same day. Postprocedure care. To help ensure a smooth recovery: For the first few days after nose surgery, rest in bed with your head elevated to reduce swelling. Apply ice packs to your nose during the first two days. This will help to relieve discomfort. Take prescription or over-the-counter pain medications as directed by your plastic surgeon. Do not blow your nose at all during the first week. Do not blow your nose forcefully for one month. Protect your nose from any injury for eight weeks. Do not wear glasses. Be careful when washing your face. Avoid vigorous exercise for at least three weeks. Avoid contact sports for six months. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions. Stitches will be removed after the first week. Nasal packing will be removed after one to two days. The splint is worn for one to two weeks or more. Numbness, swelling or bruising of the surgical area and around the eyes should be expected. Expect swelling and bruising to worsen over the first several days after the rhinoplasty surgery. You can also expect some bleeding from the nose, headache and a feeling of nasal congestion. Once the swelling and bruising have diminished, expect full healing in about three to four weeks. Possible complications. Complications are rare but no plastic surgery procedure is completely free of risk. If you are planning to have a nose job, your cosmetic surgeon will review a list of possible complications, which may include: Poor healing of the skin Unsatisfactory cosmetic result Increased risk of nosebleeds Infection Reaction to anesthetic Puncture of septum or collapse of nose bridge (relatively rare)

Neck Lift Details A neck lift can tighten muscles and remove excess skin and fatty tissues from the neck area. This procedure is commonly used to restore youthful contours to areas of the neck and along the underside of the jaw line for patients who are beginning to show signs of aging. It may also be requested by younger individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight if their skin doesn’t have enough elasticity to become firm again on its own. Am I A Candidate For Neck Lift Surgery? If you are bothered by the appearance of your neck because of drooping skin, deep wrinkles or fatty deposits that don’t respond to weight loss, you may appreciate the effects of neck lift surgery. Ideally, you should be in good health and have realistic expectations about the risks and typical outcomes of this cosmetic surgery. Smokers and individuals with health problems that could increase the potential for complications may not be good candidates for this procedure. Patient Consultation Overview Your plastic surgeon will decide on the best approach based on what issues you want to correct. There are two surgical procedures that may be done separately or together as part of a neck lift: Cervicoplasty – this operation removes excess skin to smooth out wrinkles and reduce drooping Platysmaplasty – this procedure tightens up underlying muscles and restores firmness to the neck Liposuction is often performed along with a neck lift to remove unwanted pockets of fat such as those found under the chin. Botox may also be recommended to reduce the appearance of lines. Your medical history will be reviewed and you’ll receive detailed information about the benefits and risks of each procedure. Neck lift prices vary based on a number of factors including the techniques used. You can discuss ways to finance your neck lift cost with the patient coordinator. What To Expect During Neck Lift Procedure Patients usually go home the same day after this surgery. The procedure itself takes 2 to 3 hours. To ensure safety and comfort, the type of anesthesia used (local, intravenous, general) will depend on the extent of the procedure and any specific health risk factors. For both types of neck lift, the surgeon makes incisions under the chin and/or behind the ears. With a platysmaplasty, the surgeon may adjust the position of muscles or excise portions of muscle to change the contour of the neck. Permanent sutures may be used to hold the muscles in their new position. With a cervicoplasty, small areas of skin are removed along the incision line. The edges are lifted and stitched (or surgically glued) in place to create a firmer neck line. What Is Recovery From A Neck Lift Like? Symptoms like swelling and bruising are normal side effects of this surgery. Sensations of tightness, tingling, burning, numbness and pulling are also common during neck lift recovery. You may experience these symptoms for several weeks. You’ll l wear a compression bandage for the first week to support your neck area and promote healing. Returning to sedentary work within a week is typical. If you’re very active in sports, you may need to take a break for three weeks or more before resuming your regular athletic routine. Your neck lift scars should fade and become less noticeable over the course of the next 1 to 2 years. However, they may still be visible depending on where they are located. What Are The Risks? This operation carries many of the same complication risks as other types of plastic surgery. Potential complications that are unique to neck lifts include: Damage to the nerves that control the neck muscles Excessive buildup of blood or other fluids requiring surgical draining of the siteKeep in mind that aging, changes in body weight, and other factors may cause neck skin to begin drooping again What Results Can I Expect From A Neck Lift? Many patients find that a neck lift gives their neck and jaw line better tautness and restored definition. This can make them look younger and slimmer while improving their self confidence about their appearance.
