We are giving UFC Kailua five stars because of the incredible experience our daughter has had learning from Coach Curtis Huff in the kids karate and self-defense program.
Our daughter is naturally very sweet, and even at a young age we felt it was important for her to build self-confidence, learn how to speak up, say “stop,” and feel empowered to use her voice. As parents, we can teach those things at home, but there is something very valuable about having a trusted coach and adult reinforce those same lessons in a structured and positive environment.
What Coach Curtis teaches goes far beyond karate. Yes, the kids are learning how to move their bodies, defend themselves, focus, and build new skills — but they are also learning discipline, strength, humility, honor, respect, confidence, patience, and mental strength. From the outside, it may look cute watching kids do karate, but once you see the care and intention behind the coaching, you realize it goes much deeper than that.
Coach Curtis specializes in working with kids around ages 7–12, teens, and adults, and he has a very unique way of meeting each person where they are. It is not a “keep up or you’re out” type of environment. He challenges each student within their own skill set while still pushing them to grow, learn, and become stronger both physically and mentally.
My husband and I have also taken Coach Curtis’s adult classes, and I can honestly say we have been humbled by the experience. I have had personal trainers in the past and have been going to UFC Gym for almost 10 years, and Coach Curtis is by far one of the most passionate people I have met when it comes to the craft of what he does. This is clearly not just a job for him. He teaches with purpose, patience, and skill, and he has a unique ability to explain things in a way that is truly helpful and easy to understand.
I am honestly surprised more families are not signed up for his classes, because this is such a valuable opportunity for kids, teens, and adults. The training is not just about self-defense or karate — it is about learning how to carry yourself with confidence, discipline, patience, humility, and strength.
If you are thinking about putting your child, teen, or even yourself into the karate or self-defense program, I highly encourage you to try it. It is a unique opportunity to learn from someone who genuinely cares and provides amazing training in both skill and character.
