Minimally invasive cervical disc replacement is a good solution for neck pain, arm pain, or pressure on the spinal cord (myelopathy) that hasn’t improved with non-operative treatments. Motion Preserving Neck Surgery Fast recovery Recovery from a disc replacement is very fast - usually only one week in a collar. Safe, and motion preserving Multiple studies show disc replacements are safe, protect the other discs from wearing out, and have fewer re-operations than fusions. Not suitable for everyone Disc replacement isn’t suitable for all patients, you should see an experienced surgeon to help make that decision. Significant arthritis or instability are some of the contraindications to disc replacement. A minimally invasive ACDF allows the surgeon to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord or nerves from bulging discs and arthritis through a small incision in the neck. ACDF - A gentler neck fusion Easy recovery Most patients wear a hard collar for three weeks after ACDF. Go home the same day ACDF can often be performed as an outpatient procedure, depending on your comorbidities. Small Incision The incision is typically an inch long and is usually hidden in a skin crease. Frequently asked questions about minimally invasive anterior cervical discectomy and fusion What is a minimally invasive anterior cervical discectomy and fusion? When is it used? During a laminoplasty, the lamina is opened up to create more space for the spinal cord and nerves. The lamina is opened on one side, and held into place with a small plate. This is a great option, but not suitable for all patients depending on their neck alignment. Motion preserving neck surgery Fast recovery Typically patients wear a collar for less than 2 weeks, and only for pain relief as needed. Non-Fusion SInce we don’t fuse the bones, you maintain your range of motion Increases space for the spinal cord The spinal canal surface area increases over 60%

Cervical foraminotomy is a procedure that increases the space available for the nerves as they leave the spine. It’s typically done through a small incision. It can avoid the need for a fusion. Cervical Foraminotomy Fast recovery No need to wear a collar after surgery Outpatient surgery Typically one small incision, and you can go home the same day Works for radicular pain This isn’t an option if you have pressure on the spinal cord.

Kyphoplasty is usually done in the office to stabilize a vertebral compression fracture. The procedure uses a needle to inject cement into the fracture, effectivley glueing it together, Compression fractures cause a lot of back pain, and are associated with osteoporosis in most cases. Fast Pain relief Its a small, in office procedure Typically a kyphoplasty takes less than 10 minutes, and is done with local anesthetic Fast pain relief Pain relief can be immediate following the procedure. Glues the fracture together The bone cement, or glue used in kyphoplasty is the same material used to hold knee replacements in place. Unfortunately, every time you move, or bend your back the motion re-opens the fracture and prevents healing, and causes pain. A kyphoplasty injects bone cement into the fracture and stabilizes the fracture while your bone heals around it. Compression fractures are a sign of osteoporosis, and you should have your bone density checked after having a fracture.
