DENTAL EXAMS AND CLEANINGS

The health of your teeth and mouth is very important to the well-being of your entire body. Although routine brushing and flossing at home are necessary to keep your smile looking its best, visiting our office for a comprehensive exam and cleaning is essential. The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your dentist every six months to ensure your teeth stay healthy and your smile remains beautiful.

ORAL CANCER SCREENING

Our office is not only dedicated to your smile, we’re also dedicated to your overall wellness. We take a holistic approach to your dental care, which includes an oral cancer screening as a part of your regular exam. Like other kinds of cancer, oral cancer can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. We have the skills and tools to identify early signs and symptoms of oral cancer and pre-cancerous conditions. Although these symptoms may be caused by other, less serious problems, it is essential to visit our office to rule out the possibility of oral cancer.

FLUORIDE

You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly, and visit the dentist every six months, but did you know that rinsing with fluoride — a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay — also helps keep your teeth healthy and strong? Fluoride is effective in preventing cavities and tooth decay by coating your teeth and preventing plaque from building up and hardening on the tooth’s surface.

Sealants

Sometimes brushing is not enough, especially when it comes to those hard-to-reach spots in your mouth. It is difficult for your toothbrush to get between the small cracks and grooves on your teeth. If left alone, those tiny areas can develop tooth decay. Sealants give your teeth extra protection against decay and help prevent cavities.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

A child’s first visit to the dentist should be enjoyable. Children are not born with a natural fear of the dentist, but they can fear the unknown. Our office makes a special effort to use pleasant, non-frightening, simple words to describe each treatment. We want you and your little one to feel at ease from the moment your family arrives at our office. The more you and your child know about the first visit, the better you will feel.

EMERGENCY DENTAL CARE

If you or your little one experiences a dental emergency, be sure to call our practice as soon as possible. If you need immediate attention after hours, call our emergency phone number and our on-call staff member will help you. If you are unable to reach our office during an emergency, dial 911. We are here to help you at any time, on any day. When your or your child’s dental health is at risk, we will do everything we can to make sure you’re treated as soon as possible. While dental emergencies are rare, they can happen, and it’s vital to know how to take care of your teeth no matter what.

HEALTHY MOUTH, HEALTHY LIFE

The human body is a complex puzzle, where one part is intrinsically linked to all the others. In regards to oral health, good dental hygiene involves much more than just your mouth. It is impossible to be fully healthy if you don’t have good oral health. Oral-systemic health is the idea that oral health is a critical and interconnected component to your overall health and well-being. Studies show that people who have poor oral health are more likely to have other health conditions.

MOUTHGUARDS

Whether you wear braces or not, protecting your smile while playing sports is essential. Injuries to the mouth and jaw are among the most common injuries suffered by athletes. Mouthguards help protect your teeth and gums. If you participate in basketball, boxing, hockey, football, gymnastics, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, rugby, track and field, skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding, skydiving, soccer, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting or wrestling, it is recommended by the American Dental Association that you wear a mouthguard.

NIGHTGUARDS

If you often wake up with jaw pain, earaches, or headaches, or find yourself clenching or grinding your teeth, you may have a common condition called bruxism. Although the causes of bruxism are not really known, several factors may be involved. Stressful situations at home, school, or work, problems in sleeping, an abnormal bite, and crooked or missing teeth may contribute to bruxism. Many people do not even know that they grind their teeth because it often occurs when one is sleeping. If not corrected, bruxism can lead to broken teeth, cracked teeth, damaged restorations, or even tooth loss. There is an easy, non-invasive treatment for bruxism. Nightguards are an easy way to prevent the wear and damage that teeth-grinding cause over time. Custom-made by a dentist from soft material to fit your teeth, a nightguard is inserted over your top or bottom arch and prevents contact with the opposing teeth.

TEETH FOR LIFE

Practicing good oral hygiene means maintaining your smile by visiting our office regularly and taking care of your teeth and gums between checkups. We want to make sure you get the most out of your office visits, and your teeth stay healthy for life! We’ll work with you to provide complete dental care, and show you how to maintain your smile at home with the right dental products for you and your family.

GUM DISEASE

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums surrounding your teeth. It is one of the primary causes of tooth loss in adults. Because it is virtually pain-free, many patients do not know they have the disease. During each regular checkup, we will check for signs of periodontal disease by measuring the space between your teeth and gums.

SCALING AND ROOT PLANING

Scaling and root planing is one of the most effective, non-surgical ways to treat gum disease before it becomes severe. This procedure cleans between the gums and the teeth down to the roots. Scaling is basically the process of removing dental tartar from the surfaces of the teeth. Root planing is the process of smoothing out the root surfaces and removing any infected tooth structure. If you have gum disease or gum pocketing, the gum pockets around the teeth will have deepened, thereby allowing tartar deposits to form under the gum line. A careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from deep periodontal pockets, and smoothing the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins, will help ensure your gum disease is controlled.

SAME-DAY DENTISTRY

At Modern Dental Smiles, we can transform your smile in a single visit with our use of modern technology. Dr. Bally can prepare your tooth for a crown, take a digital impression, and create your all-porcelain ceramic crown right here in our on-site lab. With same-day crowns, there is no need to take multiple days off work, wear a temporary crown, or come to our office for multiple visits.

BONDING

Bonding is a conservative way to repair slightly chipped, discolored, or crooked teeth. During dental bonding, a white filling is placed onto your tooth to improve its appearance. The filling “bonds” with your teeth. Because it comes in a variety of tooth-colored shades, it closely matches the appearance of your natural teeth. Tooth bonding can also be used for fillings instead of amalgam. Many patients prefer bonded fillings because the white color is much less noticeable than the silver amalgam. Bonding fillings can be used on front or back teeth, depending on the location and extent of tooth decay. Bonding is less expensive than other cosmetic treatments and usually can be completed in one visit to our office. However, it can stain and is easier to break than other cosmetic treatments such as porcelain veneers. If it does break or chip, let us know. The bonding generally can be easily patched or repaired in one visit.

FILLINGS

Traditional dental restoratives, or fillings, are most often made of silver amalgam. The strength and durability of this traditional dental material make it useful for situations where restored teeth must withstand extreme forces that result from chewing, often in the back of the mouth. Newer dental fillings include ceramic and plastic compounds that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. These compounds, often called composite resins, are usually used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, but they can also be used on the back teeth, depending on the location and extent of the tooth decay.

BRIDGES

A bridge may be used to replace missing teeth, help maintain the shape of your face, or alleviate stress on your bite. A bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth, looks great, and literally bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been. Your bridge can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials, and is bonded onto surrounding teeth for support. The success of any bridge depends on its foundation: the other teeth, gums, or bone to which it is attached. Therefore, it’s vital to keep your existing teeth, gums, and jaw healthy and strong.

CROWNS

Crowns are a cosmetic restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. They are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially destroyed by tooth decay. Crowns are “cemented” onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong. Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength to hold a filling. Unlike fillings, which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth. Your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression, which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed.

DENTURES

Dentistry is all about smiles, and having a confident, healthy, beautiful smile is important even for patients who wear dentures. Our practice provides personalized denture services that meet the needs and comfort levels of our patients. All our patients are unique and we create one-of-a-kind dentures that feel good and look natural.

ROOT CANALS

In the past, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you would probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called root canal treatment, your tooth can be saved. Root canals are a relatively simple procedure involving one to three office visits. Best of all, having a root canal when necessary can save your tooth and your smile!

CRACKED TEETH

Because we live longer and more stressful lives today, we are exposing our teeth to many more years of potentially damaging habits such as clenching, grinding, and chewing on hard objects. These habits make our teeth more susceptible to cracks. Our office may treat a cracked tooth to prevent further damage to the tooth structure and tissue. Cracked teeth do not always show any visible signs of damage, but may present a variety of symptoms, including erratic pain when you chew with them, and pain or sensitivity to heat and cold. In many cases, the pain may come and go, making it difficult for us to locate the source.

PROSTHODONTICS

A beautiful smile is vital to your health, hygiene, confidence, and self-esteem. At our office, we can help you have the most attractive, natural-looking smile possible through advanced prosthodontic care. Prosthodontics, or prosthetic dentistry, is an area of dentistry that concentrates on the aesthetic restoration and replacement of teeth to their proper form and function.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Your smile is one of your most important features. Dentistry is continually evolving, and with a variety of advanced treatment options, patients of all ages can easily achieve a beautiful, healthy, and aesthetic smile. ARE YOU READY FOR A SMILE MAKEOVER? If you’re considering cosmetic dental treatment, ask yourself a few simple questions: Do you hesitate when you smile? Would you like to increase your self-confidence? Do you want to look your best in social or professional situations? Are you ready to reverse any dental imperfections you may have? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, cosmetic dentistry may be the solution you’ve been looking for!

DENTAL IMPLANTS

People are living longer than ever. Though regular brushing, flossing, and checkups allow many of us to maintain our natural smiles for a lifetime, sometimes our teeth just can’t keep up. If you’ve lost a tooth (or several) due to injury or disease, dental implants can rejuvenate both your smile and your oral health. An implant is a synthetic tooth root in the shape of a post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The “root” is usually made of titanium: the same material used in many replacement hips and knees, and a metal well suited to pairing with human bone. A replacement tooth is fixed to the post. The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable. Permanent teeth are more stable and feel more like natural teeth. The ideal candidate for implants is a non-smoker who has good oral health, including a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw, and healthy gums with no sign of gum disease.

We are American expats living abroad in a country where unfortunately there are very few dental hygienists. While visiting the area, my family of 5 had all our teeth cleaned by Lisa at Modern Dental Smiles of Jupiter. It was one of the best teeth cleanings we ever had! Lisa was thorough, gentle, patient and knowledgeable. A true master of her craft! Hopefully we can get a cleaning with Lisa and the friendly folks at Modern Dental Smiles next time we are in Jupiter!
