Breast Surgery Procedures

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast enlargement, or breast enhancement, is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. Breast augmentation increases or restores breast size using silicone gel implants, saline implants, or fat transfer. Breast enlargement with implants has a long and proven history of satisfying women who want to enhance or restore balance to their figures. See Dr. Restifo’s Breast Augmentation Before & After Gallery here. If you’re curious how you might look with breast implants, you can try MENTOR’S breast implant simulator (please note this is not as advanced as the Vectra 3D imaging used at the preoperative appointment but is simply a tool to begin envisioning your transformation). Please note: Although many doctors perform cosmetic procedures, you need to know that plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and cosmetic surgeons are not the same thing, plus board-certification matters. Learn more about specialization here. Also be sure to watch the video: How to Avoid Unqualified Practitioners. Dr. Restifo is a Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon with over twenty-five years of experience performing surgery with excellent results. He does breast augmentation procedures (sometimes combined with a breast lift) two or three times a week on average. Watch Real Patient Testimonials! Am I A Good Candidate For Breast Augmentation Surgery? The most common reasons why people consider breast augmentation include: You feel your breasts are too small for your body frame You want a firmer, fuller, or better-proportioned figure Your breasts have lost volume and firmness due to pregnancy, age, or gravity The size and/or shape of your breasts have been negatively affected by weight loss Your breasts are noticeably different in size and you want to restore symmetry You feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit and form-fitting outfits You are likely a good candidate for breast augmentation if you are in good health and have realistic goals and expectations. Dr. Restifo’s Approach To Breast Augmentation Surgery Fully Customizable Breast Enhancement We know that every woman is unique in both her desires and her body shape. With that in mind, we take the time during the pre-operative consultations to learn what each patient hopes to gain from breast augmentation surgery and to decide which implant type and implant placement are best for her. In this way, every one of our patients enjoys a completely customized treatment designed with her specific goals in mind. We use Vectra® 3D imaging to make it easy to envision possible results. Dr. Restifo and his staff aim to ensure your experience is as safe and as comfortable as possible, and that you receive the best possible results. Complementary Procedures Breast augmentation can achieve dramatic and beautiful results on its own as well as in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery or non-invasive procedures. Sometimes combining breast augmentation with a breast lift will yield more satisfying results.

Think of this as a “touch-up”, either major or minor. A breast revision can include an implant exchange, replacement, or removal. It may involve lifting or re-lifting the breast tissue or moving an implant to a better position, or improving the appearance of the scar. Any aspect of your prior surgery that is no longer satisfactory can also be addressed by breast revision surgery. Am I A Good Candidate For Breast Revision Surgery? The most common reasons that people consider breast revision surgery include: You want to change your implant/breast size Your body contours have changed due to weight fluctuations and you want to create more balanced proportions You are unhappy with the results of a prior breast augmentation surgery or you want to address problems that have developed with your implants / breast tissue The position of your implants is undesirable Your saline implants have deflated or your silicone implant has a shell disruption or other structural issue You experienced capsular contracture (tightening of the scar tissue around the implant) You want to remove your breast implants You are likely a good candidate for breast revision surgery if you are in good health and have realistic goals and expectations. Dr. Restifo’s Approach To Breast Revision Fully Customizable Breast Revision Surgery During different seasons in life, a woman’s body may change alongside her aesthetic preferences based on lifestyle and life-stage. For this reason, our pre-operative consultations focus on understanding what each patient hopes to gain from breast revision surgery and to what type of procedure is the best option, and what approach will achieve the best long-term aesthetic results. Dr. Restifo has over twenty-five years of experience specializing in plastic surgery of the breast and body. He has performed hundreds of breast revision surgeries and is fully committed to ensuring each patient’s safety, satisfaction, and comfort. He will also be candid about what can be accomplished through breast revision, and will make recommendations to ensure the best possible outcome. Please note: Although many doctors perform cosmetic procedures, you need to know that plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and cosmetic surgeons are not the same thing, plus board-certification matters. Learn more about specialization here. Also be sure to watch this Plastic Surgery Channel video: How to Avoid Unqualified Practitioners. Complementary Procedures Breast revision can achieve dramatic and beautiful results on its own as well as in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures. Dr. Restifo may recommend combining breast implant replacement or removal with other procedures such as a breast lift for more satisfying results.

What Is A Breast Lift? Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift is a surgical procedure performed to raise and reshape breasts that have sagged as a result of aging, pregnancy, weight loss, heredity, gravity or other factors. By trimming excess skin and tightening supporting tissue, patients can achieve an uplifted, youthful breast contour. After surgery, the breasts are higher on the chest and firmer to the touch. The nipple and areola can also be repositioned or resized during this procedure to further enhance the appearance of the breast. See Dr. Restifo’s Before/After Photo Gallery for Breast Lift procedures. Please note: Although many doctors perform cosmetic procedures, you need to know that plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and cosmetic surgeons are not the same thing, plus board-certification matters. Learn more about specialization here. Dr. Restifo is a Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon with over twenty-five years of experience performing surgery. He does breast lifts and/or lift/augment procedures at least once a week. Watch Dr. Restifo’s video, “Maximize Your Breast Lift with Breast Mesh”. Am I A Good Candidate For A Breast Lift? A breast lift is a safe and effective procedure that can address the following issues: Sagging breasts Uneven or lopsided breasts (see video Fixing Breast Asymmetry) Breasts that have lost shape or volume Breasts that are flat or elongated Nipples or areolas pointing downwards Nipples or areolas positioned below the breast crease Drooping and/or stretched areolas One breast lower than the other Ideal candidates for this procedure should be in good overall health, maintain a stable weight and have realistic expectations. It is recommended that women who are still planning to have children postpone this procedure since pregnancy and nursing can counteract the effects of a breast lift by re-stretching the skin. Dr. Restifo’s Approach To Breast Lifts Fully Customizable Treatment Plan We know that every woman is unique in both her desires and her body shape. We also recognize that lifestyle and life-stage play a significant role in determining the best course of treatment when it comes to breast surgery. Dr. Restifo devotes ample time during each pre-operative consultation to learn what each patient hopes to gain from breast surgery. By the end of a consultation, patients have a better understanding of whether a breast lift, either on its own or combined with breast augmentation, will achieve their desired results. With over 25 years of experiencing performing breast lifts and breast lift/augmentation surgery, Dr. Restifo is fully committed to each patient’s safety, comfort, and satisfaction.

What Does A Breast Lift With Implants Involve? Breast augmentation/mastopexy, also known as breast lift with implants, is a combined procedure which increases or restores breast size and shape by using saline or silicone implants combined with a breast lift (mastopexy). Am I A Good Candidate For Having A Breast Lift With Implants? The most common reasons why people consider a breast lift with implants include: Your breasts have lost volume, shape, and firmness due to pregnancy, age, weight loss, or gravity Your breasts are noticeably different in size or shape, and you want more symmetry and fullness Your breasts appear deflated and your nipples and/or areolas are pointing downwards or positioned below the breast crease You are likely a good candidate for a breast lift with augmentation if you are in good health, have maintained a steady body weight, and have realistic goals and expectations. Dr. Restifo’s Approach To Breast Lift With Implants Fully Customizable Breast Enhancement We know that every woman has both a unique body and individual aesthetic preferences. For this reason, we take the time during the pre-operative consultations to learn what each patient hopes to gain from breast surgery. This helps to determine whether a breast lift/augmentation is the right course of treatment, and what type of implant and placement will achieve the best possible outcome. Dr. Restifo and his team provide highly personalized care to ensure that your experience is both safe and comfortable thereby yielding exceptional results. Watch Dr. Restifo’s Breast Implant Videos! See Dr. Restifo’s Breast Augmentation with Lift Photo Gallery. If you’re curious how you might look with breast implants, you can try MENTOR’S breast implant simulator (please note this is not as advanced as the Vectra 3D imaging used at preop appointments but is simply a tool to begin envisioning your transformation). Dr. Restifo has been doing breast lifts with implants for 25+ years. He is considered an expert in this procedure and regularly presents at the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery conferences about his techniques. Please note: Although many doctors perform cosmetic procedures, you need to know that plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and cosmetic surgeons are not the same thing, plus board-certification matters. Many women are genetically predisposed to having breasts that are uneven in size and shape. These differences in breasts are often undetectable to patients themselves, causing no problems at all, while other women can have obvious asymmetry, which can cause both an unbalanced appearance and emotional distress. Asymmetric breasts can be corrected through breast surgery that either enlarges the smaller breast or reduces the larger one. Implants can be placed in smaller breasts or a breast reduction can be performed on larger breasts. If the nipples appear at different heights, surgery can relocate one or both of the nipples. All of these options produce breasts that are more similar in appearance, working with each woman’s unique body to achieve the best possible results. Creating a more balanced appearance can help improve physical balance, self-confidence and body image. Dr. Restifo is a Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon with over twenty-five years of experience performing surgery. He regularly treats patients with breast asymmetry and those who had atypical adolescent breast development.

Large breasts can negatively impact a woman both physically and emotionally, causing symptoms such as chronic back pain, rashes, poor posture, low self-esteem and restricted activity. Many women seek treatment to reduce the painful effects of their large breasts, while also improving their self-confidence and overall quality of life. Also known as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction surgery reduces the size of large, disproportionate breasts by removing excess fat, tissue and skin for a more desirable appearance and relief of physical and emotional symptoms. During the breast reduction procedure, the surgeon makes either a circular incision around the nipple then downwards or an anchor incision that circles the nipple and extends down the breast and along the breast crease. Fat and glandular tissue is then removed, while excess skin is tightened to produce a smaller, natural-looking breast. The nipple and areola are not removed but are usually repositioned higher on the breast. The results of a breast reduction are visible right away and will continue to improve as swelling and bruising subside. Scars will continue to fade over time, becoming less and less noticeable. See Dr. Restifo’s Before/After Photo Gallery for Breast Reduction. Will Insurance Cover Breast Reduction? One of the most commonly asked questions patients have is whether insurance will cover any portion of breast reduction. The answer is, it depends. It depends on your insurance provider. It depends on whether the size of your breasts is causing other health concerns (e.g. back or neck problems), and it depends on how much tissue may need to be removed. Insurance companies typically require documentation that you’ve tried to correct any issue with physical therapy prior to seeking plastic surgery.

Modern surgical technology makes it possible to construct a natural-looking breast after mastectomy (breast removal) for cancer or other diseases. The procedure is commonly begun and sometimes completed immediately following mastectomy so that the patient wakes with a new breast mound instead of no breast at all. Alternatively, reconstruction may begin years after mastectomy. Many insurance companies cover reconstruction following breast cancer surgery, and legislation is currently before Congress to make coverage mandatory. Women whose cancer seems to have been eradicated with mastectomy are the best candidates for breast reconstruction. Those with health problems such as obesity and high blood pressure and those who smoke are advised to wait. Others prefer to postpone surgery as they come to terms with having cancer, consider the extent of the procedure, or explore alternatives. The reconstruction itself consists of multiple operations, the first of which involves the creation of a breast mound and is performed during or after mastectomy in a hospital under general anesthesia. Later surgeries, if necessary, may be done in the hospital or an outpatient facility, with either general or local anesthesia. There are several ways to reconstruct the breast, both with and without implants; your breast surgeon and plastic surgeon should work together with you in deciding which approach is best for you. Breast reconstruction has not been proven to affect the recurrence of cancer or other diseases, chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Nevertheless, in addition to the complications possible from any surgical procedure (bleeding, fluid collection, excessive scar tissue, or difficulties with anesthesia), there are some risks inherent in breast reconstruction, including infection around the implant, if an implant is used, and capsular contracture, when the scar (capsule) around the implant tightens, causing the breast to feel hard. Treatment for capsular contracture varies from “scoring” the scar tissue to removing or replacing the implant. Some patients may need time to come to terms emotionally with their new breasts.

Gynecomastia is a common condition that affects nearly half of all men, resulting in localized fat and/or glandular tissue in the breasts. For most cases of gynecomastia, the cause is unknown, but this condition may be linked to certain medications or diseases. Many men are embarrassed by this condition and seek treatment to achieve a smooth, contoured chest through male breast reduction. Male breast reduction may be performed using liposuction, surgery or a combination of the two, depending on the amount and type of tissue found in the breasts. If the breasts consist of mostly fatty tissue, liposuction may be used to suction out fat from an incision in the nipple or underarm areas. For breasts with an excessive amount of glandular tissue, excision surgery may be performed, which requires cutting away the excess fat, skin and tissue through a larger incision. Your surgeon will determine which technique is best for you based on your individual goals for surgery. After breast reduction surgery, patients will usually be able to return home the very same day. Post-operative symptoms may include swelling and discomfort, which can be managed through pain medication and compression garments worn for the first few days after surgery. Patients will be able to return to work once they feel well enough, but should avoid sexual activity and strenuous exercise for a week or two while the chest heals. For most patients, breast reduction surgery produces a flatter, more well-defined chest that can last for many years, as long as patients maintain a stable weight. Dr. Restifo routinely performs gynecomastia surgery.

What Is A “Mommy Makeover”? Also known as a post-pregnancy makeover, the “Mommy Makeover” refers to a series of procedures designed to restore a woman’s figure after bearing children. This may include cosmetic surgery of the breast, such as augmentation, lift, or reduction, in conjunction with cosmetic surgery of the abdomen, such as one of the tummy tuck procedures. The “Mommy Makeover” is named because it addresses the changes that typically occur during the course of one or more pregnancies which may include: Loss of breast shape and volume Sagging breasts Stretched areolas Excesses of skin and fat in the abdomen Bulging of loose or separated abdominal muscles By addressing both the abdomen and the breasts, mommy makeovers can lead to spectacular transformations of a woman’s body. Many women view this as “getting my body back”, and consider it to be a logical restoration of their physical and emotional well-being which adds to the joy of bearing and raising children. If you’re considering breast implants, you might want to try MENTOR’S breast implant simulator (please note this is not as advanced as the Vectra 3D imaging used at the preoperative appointment but is simply a tool to begin envisioning your transformation). Watch Real Patient Testimonials! Am I A Good Candidate For A Mommy Makeover? The best candidates for mommy makeovers are in good physical condition and finished with child-bearing, and who want to restore their figure to address the effects of pregnancy and childbirth. You may be a good candidate for a mommy makeover if: You want to restore your breasts and tummy to a more youthful appearance Pregnancy has negatively affected the size and shape of your breasts, leaving them deflated, uneven, with decreased volume, drooping nipples or stretched areolas Your skin has lost elasticity and is sagging You have stretch marks on your abdomen or breasts Your abdominal muscles are bulging and/or are separated following pregnancy Your waistline and/or hips are undefined You’ve got pockets of fat in your abdomen that will not respond to diet and exercise You are distressed about your post-pregnancy contours Your wardrobe choices and self-confidence have been negatively affected Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should wait before undergoing a mommy makeover since skin in the abdominal and breast areas typically loosen after substantial weight loss.

Body Procedures

What Is A Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty? Abdominoplasty, often called a “tummy tuck,” is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the US. Tummy tucks help flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin, and by tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall. Dramatic changes are achieved, restoring the abdominal contours to a more youthful and proportioned appearance. Many women report they are fully confident to wear a bikini again while most men claim a significant boost in self-esteem. See Dr. Restifo’s Before/After Photos for Tummy Tuck for Woman and Tummy Tuck For Men. Watch Real Patient Testimonials about Dr. Restifo! Are There Different Types Of Tummy Tucks? There are other tummy tuck variations, such as a “mini” tummy tuck and a “reverse” tummy tuck, which target excess skin and fat in either the lower or upper abdomen, respectively. A tummy tuck that is combined with breast surgery (augmentation, lift, or reduction) is often referred to as a “Mommy Makeover”. Please note: Although many doctors perform tummy tuck procedures, it’s important to understand that plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and cosmetic surgeons are not the same thing, plus board-certification matters. Learn more about specialization here. Dr. Restifo is a Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon with over twenty-five years of experience performing surgery. He typically does over 100 tummy tucks each year. Am I A Good Candidate For A Tummy Tuck? The best candidates for abdominoplasty are in good physical condition with pockets of fat or loose skin that haven’t responded well to diet and exercise. Often the surgery to remove excess skin and fat involves less effort than the weight loss itself, and many patients consider the tummy tuck to be their “reward” for achieving a much healthier body weight. If you need to lose weight before having surgery, check out our special deal with Edge Fitness Clubs. You May Be A Good Candidate For A Tummy Tuck If: Your skin and muscles have been affected by pregnancy or massive weight loss You’ve got pockets of fat or excess skin in your abdomen that will not respond to diet and exercise Your body image or self-esteem has been compromised because of your abdominal contours Your skin has lost elasticity and/or you have stretch marks on your abdomen Your wardrobe choices and self-confidence are affected by excessive loose skin Your weight is stable Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should wait before undergoing the procedure since skin in the abdominal area typically loosens after substantial weight loss. Patients who plan to get pregnant should also wait. Dr. Restifo’s Approach To Tummy Tucks We take the time during every pre-operative consultation to learn what each patient wants to achieve from a tummy tuck, both for their bodies and for their self-confidence. By listening to what patients have to say and closely examining them rather than performing a one-size-fits-all procedure on every person, we provide patients with completely customized treatment that takes into account their specific goals. Both men and women can benefit from this extremely effective body contouring surgery.

The abdomen is often the site of localized fat accumulation that may result in a bulge or prominence. Many patients are frustrated by their inability to correct this completely with diet and exercise. Liposuction will remove this fat from underneath the skin without leaving significant scars, resulting in an improved abdominal contour. Recovery times are minimized by this approach as well. However, the skin must have sufficient elasticity to tighten after the fat is removed. Patients with many stretch marks or generally loose or flabby skin may be better candidates for abdominoplasty.

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess fat and skin from the upper arms for a more toned, slimmer appearance. Over time, the soft tissue in the upper arm becomes lax and may begin to droop and sag, resulting in arms that appear loose and hanging. Many people are embarrassed by the appearance of sagging upper arms, and seek treatment to restore a slimmer, more youthful appearance. The arm lift procedure is ideal for patients who have a significant amount of excess, hanging skin or fat in the upper arm area, maintain a stable weight and have realistic expectations for surgery. It is also important that patients are healthy overall, with no major medical conditions that may be affected by surgery. See Dr. Restifo’s Before/After Photo Gallery for Arm Lift. Please note: Although many doctors perform arm lifts you need to know that plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons typically hold different credentials and that board-certification matters. Learn more about specialization here. Dr. Restifo is a Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon with over twenty-five years of experience performing surgery with excellent results. He does arm lifts regularly.

Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that can be used to remove stubborn fat and tissue from stubborn areas of the body, including the upper arms, which have a tendency to sag with age or significant weight gain or loss. The liposuction procedure can achieve a slimmer contour with minimal scarring by inserting a cannula through a tiny incision to suction out fat and tighten tissue. Patients can achieve noticeably younger-looking arms from liposuction with short recovery times and often only a local anesthetic required. It is important for patients to maintain realistic expectations and use liposuction for minor fat reduction and shaping rather than for significant weight loss. Moreover, arm liposuction gets best results for patients whose skin is able to bounce back. An arm lift (brachioplasty) may be a better option if your skin has lost elasticity.

A body lift, also known as a belt lipectomy, is performed to remove excess skin or fatty tissue on the body that results from age or extreme weight loss. More extensive than just a tummy tuck, the body lift is performed on the lower torso and upper legs and resculpts the abdomen, hips, back, buttocks and outer thighs. Why Get A Body Lift? Exercise and a healthy diet cannot always achieve the desired results for people who have loose, sagging skin and uneven contours. Aging, sun damage, cellulite, genetics, pregnancy, and significant fluctuations in weight may contribute to poor tissue elasticity and can result in sagging of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. A body lift may help to achieve a firmer, more youthful-looking body. Candidates For Body Lift People who have lost a large amount of weight, either through gastric bypass surgery, intestinal bypass surgery, lap-band surgery or change in nutrition and fitness habits, may have excess skin on their bodies and are excellent candidates for a body lift. Other people who are unable to lose 30 or 40 pounds through diet or exercise may also opt for body lift surgeries. A body lift is also an option for normal-weight women who have given birth and want to remove remaining skin and tissue after losing post-pregnancy weight. The Body Lift Procedure The steps of the body lift procedure differ depending on the needs of the patient. In most cases, however, the surgeon will operate on the stomach first, removing excess skin from the belly button to the pubic area and then tightening the abdominal wall muscles. This is the area that is most often loosened by pregnancy or excessive weight loss. The fat and skin from above the belly button is pulled down and sutured in place, and the belly button is pulled out to its normal position. The procedure continues with the buttocks and thigh areas, with the incisions being made as inconspicuous as possible. In cases that require the removal of fat, liposuction is often involved. The entire body lift procedure takes 3 to 6 hours and is performed under general anesthetic. Recovery A body lift is a major surgical procedure and requires significant recovery time. Most patients can expect to remain in the facility for 1 to 3 nights after the operation and can typically return to work in 2 to 4 weeks. Patients are encouraged to walk after the surgery, but to avoid other activities such as exercising until sufficient healing has occurred. This usually takes 6 to 8 weeks. Approximately 75 percent of the swelling goes down after six weeks and 90 percent after about three months. Risks And Considerations As with every surgical procedure, a body lift has risks and potential complications. These include: Fluid accumulating under the skin (seroma) Small skin separations Reduced sensation in the treated area Infection Bleeding (hematoma) Blood clots Unfavorable scarring Skin discoloration Recurrent looseness of skin Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications

As we get older, our buttocks and thighs may begin to droop and sag like other areas of the body, such as the breasts and stomach. Stubborn pockets of localized fat may develop as well, which do not go away despite traditional weight loss attempts such as diet and exercise. Fortunately, like these other areas, there are surgical options available for reversing these changes and restoring a tighter, firmer and more youthful appearance to the buttock and outer thigh area. These cosmetic procedures can be performed alone, or in combination with other cosmetic procedures, such as part of a body lift or with a gluteal augmentation. When combined with other procedures, patients can achieve maximum aesthetic results and enjoy a younger and more refreshed appearance overall. Candidates For The Buttock Lift Procedure The buttock lift procedure is ideal for candidates who are in good general health and have excess skin and tissue within the area, as a result of the natural aging process, pregnancy or significant weight loss. This procedure should not be considered an easy weight loss solution, and should be performed on patients who are close to their ideal weight, but are unhappy with the appearance of their buttocks and outer thighs. It is important for patients to have realistic expectations in order to achieve successful results from this procedure. What Happens During My Buttock Lift Procedure? The buttock procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The entire procedure usually takes two to three hours to perform. Your doctor will place the incision across the top of the buttocks, low enough to be concealed by underwear or a bikini. This incision spreads along the back from one hip bone to the other. After the incision is made, excess skin and fat are removed from the buttocks and thighs. This may be done using liposuction if there is a large amount of fat to be removed. The skin is then stretched to position the buttocks and thighs into their new position, and the area is sutured closed. Compression garments are usually applied to help reduce swelling and expedite the healing process. Some patients may need to stay overnight after this procedure, while others can leave shortly after the effects of anesthesia have worn off. Please note: Although many doctors perform cosmetic procedures, you need to know that plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons are not the same thing, plus board-certification matters. Learn more about specialization here. Dr. Restifo is a Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon with over twenty-five years of experience performing surgery. He does buttock lifts frequently. Watch Real Patient Testimonials about Dr. Restifo! What Should I Expect From During My Recovery? After the buttock lift procedure, patients may experience temporary swelling, soreness and bruising for a few days. These side effects can be controlled with pain medication prescribed by your doctor. Most patients can return to work and regular activities after about two weeks, but should avoid strenuous exercise for at least four weeks. The appearance of the scars from this procedure will continue to change for up to 18 months, but usually fade and can be easily concealed. Results The results of this procedure are considered long-lasting, as long as no significant weight loss occurs. Patients can enjoy a trimmer contour with improved skin tightness and smoothness. The appearance of cellulite can also be improved through this procedure. Even after a buttock lift, patients are not immune to the effects of aging, and the buttocks and outer thighs will begin to droop and sag again over time. However, the buttocks and outer thighs will continue to look better than if a lift had never been performed on them. Risks And Considerations Although this procedure is considered safe for most patients, there are certain risks and complications associated with any type of surgical procedure. Some of these risks may include infection, healing problems, blood clots and fluid drainage. Patients can reduce these risks by choosing a skilled and experienced surgeon to perform their procedure, and by adhering to their surgeon’s instructions before and after the procedure.

Many women suffer from enlarged labia minora (the inner genital lips). Some may not like the appearance of their large, uneven or thick labia, which can sometimes extend beyond the labia majora. Others may be bothered by labial irritation while conducting normal activities or may find it difficult to keep the labial area clean. Still, others may experience pain during sexual intercourse, sports or other vigorous activities. Large, thick or uneven labia can be an embarrassing condition to discuss with a doctor or gynecologist, but there is a procedure available to help. Labiaplasty reduces large labia or reshapes uneven labia, improving their appearance and reducing associated discomfort. Labiaplasty is a relatively minor surgical procedure that trims large or uneven labia minora for cosmetic, hygienic, pain relief and/or functional reasons. Labiaplasty can be performed alone or together with other procedures such as vaginoplasty and liposuction for more extensive vaginal rejuvenation. Some women are born with large, thick or irregular labia. Others may develop large labia after giving birth or as they age. Whatever the cause, you do not have to live with large labia if they cause you pain or lower your confidence. If you are unhappy with the way your labia look, feel or interfere in your life, labiaplasty may be the solution you’ve been looking for. Please note: Although many doctors perform labiaplasty you need to know that plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons typically hold different credentials and that board-certification matters. Learn more about specialization here. Dr. Restifo is a Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon with over twenty-five years of experience performing surgery with excellent results. He does labiaplasty frequently. Some (though not all) patients are good candidates for having labiaplasty done in the comfort of our Orange office location (saving money on anesthesia and facility fees). Intended Goals Of Labiaplasty Labiaplasty offers solutions to large labia in several ways. By trimming large labia, labiaplasty can: Improve the appearance of the vagina and vulva Boost self-confidence Reduce discomfort caused by clothes rubbing against the labia Eliminate pain caused by large labia during sexual intercourse Improve or restore sexual satisfaction that was hampered by large labia Labiaplasty Procedure Labiaplasty is generally done just after the patient has had her period. Before the labia reduction procedure, the patient receives anesthesia or IV sedation along with medications to block nerve signals and minimize bleeding. Then the surgeon trims excess labial tissue. Recent advances in surgical techniques allow surgeons to recreate the edges of the labia with a natural-looking color and shape. Finally, the surgeon closes the wounds with absorbable stitches and applies an antibiotic cream and sanitary pad. Recovery From Labiaplasty Most patients have an easy recovery after labiaplasty, experiencing only mild swelling and little to no discomfort. Patients typically return to work in two to four days and resume sexual activity in six weeks. Post-operative care involves carefully washing the area and using antibiotic creams to prevent infection. The body naturally absorbs the stitches used during surgery over time, so no follow-up procedure is needed to take them out. Risks Of Labiaplasty Complications with labiaplasty are rare, but as with any surgery, there are risks. These can include bleeding, infection, poor healing, labial asymmetry, labia that are smaller or larger than desired, and the need for a second surgery. Labiaplasty is a delicate procedure. One way to ensure that your surgery is as safe as possible and achieves your goals is to choose a qualified, experienced surgeon who has performed many successful labiaplasty procedures.

Non-Invasive Procedures

A Liquid Face Lift for woman and men involves improvement in every area of your face, including eye and nose area, chin, cheeks, mouth, neck and forehead. A Liquid Face Lift involves the use of advanced dermal fillers, such as Juvederm®, Radiesse®, and Restylane® usually in combination with BOTOX®. The Liquid Face Lift is an non-surgical procedure which helps to lift and contour facial features. Look younger and more vibrant with a Liquid Face Lift turning back time has never been easier or more affordable. Just because your getting older certainly doesn’t mean you have to look it.

Liquid rhinoplasty is a procedure in which injectable fillers are used to alter and sculpt a patient’s nose without invasive surgery. The most commonly used fillers are hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma) or calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse). The injected liquid “fills” the depressed areas on the nose, lifting the tip or smoothing the bumps on the nasal bridge. Liquid rhinoplasty or non-surgical rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure and rarely corrects functional or breathing problems of the nose. Results usually last six months to one year depending on which fillers are used, and the procedure may be repeated.

Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that, either surgically or with injections, increases lip size. Either the upper or lower lip, or both, can be augmented. Whether the results are temporary or long-lasting depends on the type of augmentation performed. There are several different techniques for augmenting lips. Most involve injecting a facial filler, although fat transfers (also called fat grafting) and implants are also options. Injectable fillers usually contain a hyaluronic-acid material. Fat transfers inject fat that is harvested from the patient’s body. Implants are placed under the skin; they are often made of a soft, solid-silicone elastomer. Which type of augmentation is used depends upon the individual patient, doctor preference and the cosmetic results desired.

Cheek augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that attempts to reshape the person’s facial topography into a more visually aesthetic form. It is commonly combined with similar cosmetic operations such as a facelift or chin augmentation because the implants can be inserted through the incisions for those surgeries. This can be an elective surgery or a response to a deformity or accident which has disfigured the face.

Juvederm® Radiesse | Juvederm | Restylane Orange CT | New Haven | Fairfield CountyJUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved dermal filler that, according to its manufacturer, Allergan, Inc., is designed to “temporarily treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds” in people older than 21. Unlike the original JUVÉDERM injectable gel, JUVÉDERM XC is infused with lidocaine to make its injection more comfortable. JUVÉDERM XC is a smooth-consistency gel that restores volume to the skin, and smooths away moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar that occurs naturally in the body. In terms of the skin, HA’s role is to deliver nutrients and hydration, and act as a cushioning agent. Young, healthy skin contains a lot of HA, but factors that include aging and sun exposure reduce the amount, causing skin to lose structure and volume. JUVÉDERM XC is most effective in improving the appearance of nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth on both sides of the face. Radiesse® Radiesse | Juvederm | Restylane Orange CT | New Haven | Fairfield CountyRADIESSE® volumizing filler is a synthetic injectable filler that has been U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved for reducing moderate-to-severe wrinkles, folds and creases around the nose and mouth by augmenting the skin’s natural collagen supply. It is a safe, effective and long-lasting alternative to injectable collagen and other dermal fillers for smoothing wrinkles and adding facial volume and contour. RADIESSE filler is composed of microspheres in a water-based gel; the microspheres are made of a substance called calcium hydroxylapatite, which stimulates the production of collagen. When injected into lines and wrinkles, the additional collagen that is produced smooths out the lines and wrinkles, and adds volume to the skin. Restylane® Radiesse | Juvederm | Restylane Orange CT | New Haven | Fairfield CountyU.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved Restylane® injectable gel is a cosmetic “filler” that contains hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that is found in the body. HA gives volume and elasticity to the skin, but as the body ages, HA levels decrease, resulting in loose skin and wrinkling. When injected, Restylane gel is designed to plump the skin beneath lines and wrinkles, smoothing them out and making them less noticeable. The most common areas for Restylane treatment are the glabellar lines (which run between the eyebrows) and the nasolabial folds (which run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth). Restylane injectable gel is also FDA-approved, for those 21 and older, for enhancing the lips. According to manufacturer Medicis, results can last for up to 6 months, at which point the hyaluronic acid is reabsorbed by the body.

Modern technology provides a variety of successful laser resurfacing treatments for improving the condition of the skin. Laser skin treatments employ focused beams of light energy to counteract the effects on the skin of acne, aging, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, scars, or poor nutrition. Resurfacing laser treatments are safe and efficient, requiring little downtime to provide effective results. Much less invasive than dermabrasion and chemical peels, laser treatments remove damaged skin and rejuvenate the patient’s appearance. Most of the time, such treatments are sought for the face, but may also be performed on other parts of the body. Reasons For Laser Resurfacing Patients seek laser resurfacing for a variety of reasons, all related to discontent with their appearance. Laser resurfacing may be performed for any of the following reasons: To decrease or eliminate wrinkles or stretchmarks To diminish the appearance of scars To rejuvenate non-responsive skin after a facelift To remove age spots or spider veins To repair sun-damaged skin To improve skin tone due to melasma or other causes To remove warts or birthmarks To decrease the size of enlarged pores To remove tattoos Types Of Laser Resurfacing There are two basic types of laser resurfacing treatments: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative Laser Resurfacing Ablative laser treatments, which penetrate more deeply, actually cause a wound, since they remove a layer of skin. Since ablative resurfacing actually vaporizes a layer of the skin, it provides more dramatic results and requires fewer sessions, but also requires a longer period of healing. Non-Ablative Resurfacing Non-ablative treatments do not burn away skin tissue, but use laser energy to stimulate collagen growth and tighten underlying skin. Non-ablative resurfacing is gentler than ablative and requires less downtime, but may necessitate more treatment sessions and may yield less dramatic results. In general, non-ablative laser treatments are used when the repair needed is less extensive. Also, non-ablative treatments are recommended for people of color for whom ablative resurfacing may be more likely to cause unsightly changes in pigmentation. A form of ablative resurfacing known as fractional ablative laser is now increasingly in use. This procedure targets more specific regions so that laser microbeams pinpoint and peel away smaller areas of skin. During fractional laser surfacing, no visible wounds are caused, so, although results are more noticeable, less downtime is necessary than after conventional ablative treatments. For some individuals, fractional ablative laser resurfacing represents the best of both worlds. The Laser Resurfacing Procedure Laser treatments for skin conditions are typically performed in the doctor’s office with topical anesthesia. Procedures typically take between 30 and 90 minutes to perform, depending on the size and location of the treated area. While some individuals will notice significant results after just one treatment, particularly with ablative procedures, many patients will require multiple sessions in order to achieve the desired results. It is also possible that additional touch-up treatments will be needed at a future date. Risks Of Laser Resurfacing Although laser skin treatment is considered safe for most patients and is typically performed with no long-term complications, there are certain risks associated with any type of medical procedure. While considered rare, risks may include: Infection Scarring Redness Pigmentation changes Acne Milia, tiny white bumps on the skin Recovery From Laser Resurfacing Recovery from laser resurfacing procedures varies according to the particular procedure undergone and the individual patient’s skin type. In all cases, however, patients who have undergone these treatments should avoid sun exposure wherever possible. Recovery From Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing After treatment, patients may experience redness and peeling at the treated site as the skin heals. The duration of these side effects varies, but is commonly several days. Ice packs may ease discomfort and improve appearance. Normal activities can be resumed during healing, and makeup may be applied to camouflage any unwanted, evidence of treatment. Recovery From Ablative Laser Resurfacing After ablative laser resurfacing, the treated skin will temporarily be raw, swollen and itchy and the yellowish liquid that oozes from treated areas may form crusts. After treatment, a thick ointment, such as petroleum jelly, and a watertight dressing will be applied to the affected area. If treatment has been performed on the face, the patient may be instructed to keep the head elevated during the night. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers may be recommended for symptom relief. To help avoid scarring, patients are instructed not to pick at crusts or pieces of skin. Visible healing may take a week or two.
