What is General Dentistry? General Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, the maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures, and their impact on the human body. To the layman, dentistry tends to be perceived as being focused primarily on human teeth, though it is not limited strictly to this. What is the importance of general dentistry? Dentistry is widely considered necessary for complete overall health. Doctors who practice dentistry are known as dentists. The dentist’s supporting team – which includes dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians, and dental therapists – aids in providing oral health services. What People Say About Us! Very professional and helpful. STRONGLY RECCOMENF THIS DENTAL OFFICE. Click here to read more reviews. State of the Art Dental Technology Candlewood Dental Care uses only state of the art equipment. We use a Intra-Oral Camera– this is new technology that allows the dentist to take a still picture of a tooth or area in the mouth so the patient can see what is going on in their oral cavity. We also use a Velscope which is new technology that uses a special wavelength of light to illuminate improperly dividing cells as the link between oral cancer and the HPV virus becomes more prominent it is vital to get an annual oral cancer screening. What is Preventative Dental Care? Preventative Dental Care is the information and treatment you receive to ensure your mouth stays healthy and to prevent disease. Our hygienists are trained in the most up-to-date procedures to make sure your visits are comprehensive. At every hygiene visit, your blood pressure will be taken and disease processes will be discussed, both dental and systemic. Your mouth is a passageway to your body so we not only want your mouth to be healthy, but also want you to be healthy overall. Whether it is your first visit with us or a check-up appointment, you will receive top-notch care and information to make sure your mouth and overall well-being are as healthy as can be. Why Choose Candlewood Dental for Preventative Dentistry in CT At Candlewood Dental Care, we use state-of-the-art equipment to provide the best care for our patients. We utilize intraoral cameras so we can show you what we see! These cameras take still pictures of teeth, gums, or soft tissue so you can see areas of concern and understand why certain procedures need to be done. We also use a Velscope to perform oral cancer screenings. Usually, during your routine dental visit, a dentist or hygienist performs a visual clinical oral cancer screening, making sure all areas in the mouth are normal without ulceration or swelling. However, new studies have shown that there is a link between oral cancer and HPV. Studies have also revealed that if a mass is noticeable with the naked eye, the malignancy has progressed too far. The VELscope technology uses a special blue light to excite the abnormal cells in the mucosa and make them fluorescent. Because of the link with HPV, it is recommended that all adults from the age of 18 get regular VELscope oral cancer screenings once a year. The periodontium includes the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth, like the bones and ligaments that hold the teeth in place. A periodontal procedure involves these structures. Your gums and bone that surround the teeth are the reason why they are sturdy in your mouth. As these tissues start getting inflamed and infected, your teeth become compromised. At My Candlewood Dental, Dr. Lorraine Burio offers effective treatment for all stages of gum disease at our New Fairfield, CT office. What Is Periodontitis? Periodontitis, also known as periodontal disease, affects the bone and ligament that hold your teeth in place. Periodontal disease is the #1 cause of tooth loss. Once you get to the stage of having periodontal disease, you need to have special cleanings called scaling & root planning, more commonly referred to as “Deep cleanings.” At our New Fairfield office, Dr. Burio or a hygienist cleans all the way to the bottom of the “turtleneck” (with local anesthetic of course) to make sure the bacteria and inflammation are removed. Dr. Burio also sometimes uses a laser to clean and disinfect the area if a pocket is too deep. Once you get a deep cleaning, you will need to see the hygienist every 3 months for periodontal maintenance. Studies have shown that the bacteria that causes periodontal disease takes about 90 days to re-colonize. A 3-month maintenance visit will make sure you do not get active periodontal disease again. Gingivitis In New Fairfield, CT Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gingiva (gums). This occurs when you do not visit the dentist for your cleanings, have poor oral hygiene, do not floss, take certain medications, or have hormonal changes, like puberty or pregnancy. Your gums hug your teeth tight to keep bacteria out, kind of like a turtleneck. If this “turtleneck” loosens due to any of the above-listed reasons, a pocket forms allowing bacteria to enter and wreak havoc on the periodontium. If the gum loosens any more than a certain amount, you will no longer be able to keep the area clean. When you get to this point you progress from having gingivitis to periodontitis, or the inflammation of the periodontium. What Are The Symptoms Of Gum Disease? Gums that bleed during and after tooth brushing Red, swollen, or tender gums Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth Receding gums Formation of deep pockets between teeth and gums Loose or shifting teeth Changes in the way teeth fit together upon biting down, or in the fit of partial dentures. Even if you don’t notice any symptoms, you may still have some degree of gum disease. In some people, gum disease may affect only certain teeth, such as the molars. Only a dentist or a periodontist can recognize and determine the progression of gum disease. Gum Disease Treatment In New Fairfield, CT Non-Surgical Treatment Deep Cleaning Laser treatments – prevent surgery Surgical Treatment – if the disease can not be controlled with the above treatments, we will refer you to a specialist to evaluate for further treatment. My Candlewood Dental refers Wisdom Tooth Extractions to a recommended oral surgeon. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon or your dentist can remove a wisdom tooth. The procedure often can be done in the dentist’s or surgeon’s office. You may have the surgery in the hospital, especially if you are having all your wisdom teeth pulled at one time or if you are at high risk for complications. If you have any infections, surgery will usually be delayed until the infection has cleared up. Your doctor or dentist may have you take antibiotics to help heal the infection. To remove the wisdom tooth, your dentist will open up the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. He or she will separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth. Sometimes the dentist will cut the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove. After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches. Some stitches dissolve over time and some have to be removed after a few days. Your dentist will tell you whether your stitches need to be removed. A folded cotton gauze pad placed over the wound will help stop the bleeding. What To Expect After Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery In most cases, the recovery period lasts only a few days. Take painkillers as prescribed by your dentist or oral surgeon. The following tips will help speed your recovery. Bite gently on the gauze pad periodically, and change pads as they become soaked with blood. Call your dentist or oral surgeon if you still have bleeding 24 hours after your surgery. While your mouth is numb, be careful not to bite the inside of your cheek or lip, or your tongue. Do not lie flat. This may prolong bleeding. Prop up your head with pillows. Try using an ice pack on the outside of your cheek for the first 24 hours. You can use moist heat-such as a washcloth soaked in warm water and wrung out-for the following 2 or 3 days. Relax after surgery. Physical activity may increase bleeding. Eat soft foods, such as gelatin, pudding, or a thin soup. Gradually add solid foods to your diet as healing progresses. Do not use a straw for the first few days. Sucking on a straw can loosen the blood clot and delay healing. After the first day, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to reduce swelling and relieve pain. You can make your own salt water by mixing 1 tsp (5 g) of salt in a medium-sized glass [8 fl oz (240 mL)] of warm water. Do not smoke for at least 24 hours after your surgery. The sucking motion can loosen the clot and delay healing. Also, smoking decreases the blood supply and can bring germs and contaminants to the surgery area. Avoid rubbing the area with your tongue or touching it with your fingers. Continue to brush your teeth and tongue carefully. Your dentist will remove the stitches after a few days, if needed. Why It Is Done A wisdom tooth is extracted to correct an actual problem or to prevent problems that may come up in the future. When wisdom teeth come in, a number of problems can occur: Your jaw may not be large enough for them, and they may become impacted and unable to break through your gums. Your wisdom teeth may break partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them. Food and germs can get trapped under the flap and cause your gums to become red, swollen, and painful. These are signs of infection. More serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or a cyst. One or more of your wisdom teeth may come in at an awkward angle, with the top of the tooth facing forward, backward, or to either side. How Well It Works Wisdom tooth removal usually is effective in preventing: Crowding of the back teeth. A wisdom tooth becoming stuck in the jaw (impacted) and never breaking through the gums. Red, swollen, and painful gums caused by a flap of skin around a wisdom tooth that has only partially come in. Gum disease and tooth decay in the wisdom tooth, which may be harder to clean than other teeth, or in the teeth and jaw in the area of the wisdom tooth.

An orthodontist is the oral health care provider who specializes in diagnosis, prevention, interception, and treatment of malocclusions, or “bad bites,” of the teeth and surrounding structures. Malocclusions can result from crowded, missing, or extra teeth or jaws that are out of alignment. This specialist is responsible for straightening teeth by moving them through bone by the use of bands, wires, braces, and other fixed or removable corrective appliances or retainers. This specialist treats children as well as adults who may wish to improve their appearance and bite. Schedule Your Consultation

Complete Dentures by Candlewood Dental Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” Made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, a conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about eight to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. Conventional vs. Immediate Dentures Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made. Partial Dentures A removable partial denture or bridge usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position. A precision partial denture is removable and has internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to the adjacent crowns. This is a more natural-looking appliance.
