I entered the residential unit of the Betty Ford for my opioid addiction after a brief stay in detox, as I had already detoxed at home. I found the accommodations to be nice and adequate, but not luxury, more like a nice dorm with a meeting area and kitchen. We had mostly 2 to a room and a patio area. The oversight was there, but not overbearing. The staff are so nice and caring; from the techs to nursing, the instructors, counselors and even the cafeteria staff. After 3 weeks in residential I moved to PHP, which is a great intensive learning environment. I live nearby so I went home, but many people go to Daisy Lane, which is a nice housing site for sober living. After PHP, there is another step down to IOP, which I intend to go to as well to complete my treatment. The grounds are just beautiful with lush green grass against a backdrop of gorgeous mountains. The cafeteria is great with a variety of fresh foods and daily changing salad bar. I have really enjoyed my stay and experience here and I have been clean and sober for over 60 days now. Betty Ford has saved my life and I never want to go back to drugs and alcohol again.

This program doesn’t meet the most basic standards of care for an inpatient rehab. About 30% of the time there’s no staff physically in the dorms. When present, dorm staff mostly sat in their locked office (with a privacy partition drawn shut). Detox protocol seems dependent on how you pay for the program (self-pay stays in detox MUCH longer than insurance). A patient in my dorm had a detox seizure and the other patients (not staff) responded. The patient arrived in the dorm with obvious visible constant tremors. About 2 days later, when he had the seizure I ended up being the person to call 911 and the in house medical staff had NO hustle to help. You could ignore prescribed meds for a few days before the staff reacted. I once slept through my assigned nighttime med time (you walk to a different building to collect your medication) and no one noticed. I entered the program and went over a week without meeting with a psychiatrist despite requesting to see a doctor. When I did finally meet the dr it was only a half hr appointment. Betty Ford failed to refill two different prescription medications. Over the course of almost a week I asked everyday for a medication their doctor prescribed. It was never filled. I asked everyday for like 5 days for Betty ford (before I ran out) to refill a prescription antidepressant medication I’ve taken for 14 years. I discharged on the day i was scheduled to run out; they just placed the empty antidepressant bottle in my discharge medication bag as though it was full. Many groups are lectures w one provider for 60 plus patients. These lectures consist of counselors reading from a PowerPoint. One presenter incorrectly defined “listless” (it was written on his PowerPoint) as having lots of energy. This was pretty concerning to me. My counselor (group therapy coordinator) was unable to separate his personal experiences from my treatment. When I mentioned specific phobias around men/asked about single-sex (not gender) accommodations he made it about him and his sexual orientation and political views. I needed a copy of my medical records to discharge and go to another program. Betty Ford said they just got a new computer system (EMR) and would be unable to send medical records “for a few months”. I wouldn’t recommend to anyone even if this program had a more appropriate price tag. It currently cost $28,000 a month. I emailed the address they write on these comments and no one emailed back.

First Day, First Impression Today was my first day at Betty Ford, and I came here as a first-timer with an open mind, a willingness to be vulnerable, and a genuine desire to change my life. Because of that, first impressions matter. I understand that a large treatment center is busy and that staff have many patients to care for. But when someone is new, small things can feel very significant. Tonight I needed help learning how to use the safe. I pressed the call button specifically to ask for assistance. When no one came, I eventually went to the front desk myself—and still could not get anyone to come show me how to use it. That may sound like a small inconvenience, but on your first day in an unfamiliar environment, it doesn't feel small. You're trying to understand the rules, the routines, the environment, and what is expected of you. You shouldn't have to wonder whether anyone is going to respond when you ask for help. I am not writing this to condemn Betty Ford. I am writing it because I came here expecting a level of attentiveness consistent with the reputation of this institution. This is only my first day, so I will reserve judgment about the treatment itself. I am here to do my part, and I genuinely hope Betty Ford will do theirs. I came here ready to heal. I hope that from tomorrow forward, I feel like I am being met with the same level of commitment that I brought with me when I walked through those doors. light button has been pressed for about 1 hour.. without counting me walking to the front desk.

As the long-term partner of a patient here, the negligence and dismissal of rules that occurred in this facility has caused me significant emotional distress. 1. The guidance counselor Christina called me directly and told me that my long term boyfriend had to break up with me. This was bizarre behavior and out of the blue, as we were doing fine until I went out of the country for a trip. I had been spending thousands of dollars and taking time out of my schedule to visit my partner in the desert every week. When I came back, things were off with him. I was confused. It turned out that my long term partner was having an affair with another patient he met in this rehab the entire time. I discovered this information through social media, not because either of them told me. Christina knew about the affair and allowed it to happen, then cruelly made my long-term partner break up with me over the phone and lied about the reason why he “had to” be single (he is not by definition single if he is having an affair with another patient, by the way) by disguising it as concern for his health and wellbeing. In my opinion, such affairs should not happen as the patient should be focusing on themselves and getting sober, not romantic relations, especially if the person already has a partner and is supportive of their partner. This event has caused me significant distress and emotional turmoil. It is negligent and dishonest to allow such a thing to happen in a rehab and for a counselor to help cover it up and allow it to happen. The patient should be focused on getting sober, not hurting and betraying their partner. 2. The psychiatrist prescribed my partner adderall after a few months of him doing a sober living program there, which was one of the things he was addicted to. Again, this is negligent and preposterous behavior, to not even take into account that he has a history of abusing adderall and to prescribe it. While he was in the sober living program, he explicitly told me over text that he was tempted to abuse the adderall they prescribed to him by snorting it. Most likely, he abused it while he was in the program. I believe the psychiatrist should lose their license for this kind of medical mismanagement. Overall, the events that have occurred here have caused me significant distress. If you are the loved one of a patient here, be careful, and take everything the doctors and counselors say with a grain of salt, as they lie and engage in malpractice often. They will allow your loved one to relapse or engage in activities that they claim are against the rules, as the staff allows it.
