Dr. Rojeh Melikian was simply amazing. From the moment I met him, I felt truly cared for. He took the time to walk me through everything with such clarity and compassion, and I never felt rushed or overwhelmed. What really stood out was how quickly he moved to help me, he got me in to see his pain management doctor the very next day, and she was phenomenal as well.
For the first time in a long time, I feel like I’m in great hands. Dr. Melikian’s expertise, kindness, and dedication made an incredibly stressful situation so much easier to navigate. I’m genuinely grateful and can’t recommend him highly enough.

I woke up with severe muscle spasm throughout my left leg and a numb left foot Saturday morning few weeks ago.
I contacted Dr. Melikian office, Cecilia scheduled me an urgent appointment with Dr. Melikian within days.
Dr. Melikian schedule me to an MRI and told me to come straight to his office after the MRI. As I enter the office, Dr. Melikian was already checking the MRI and showed me what happened.
The left side of my L5-S1 disc was all over my nerve, severe herniation.
He scheduled me within a week for a discectomy of the L5-S1 disc.
I didn’t hesitate, I knew I am in great hands and that surgery is the only way to relive the pain from my leg and lower back.
Dr. Melikian took out the disc part that was pressuring the nerve (36mm in length)
I am now 3 weeks post surgery and still in recovery but the pressure from the nerve is gone and my foot numbness is getter better daily.
Thanks to Dr. Melikian prompt action I am pain free.
I can’t thank enough Dr. Melikian, Cecilia and the medical team at
Hoag Orthopedic Institute Surgery Center for walking normal again without any pain.

Dr. Melikian was patient in answering questions and inspired confidence that his recommended procedure would bring me relief from my pain and nerve damage (so far, so good). His post-surgery follow up has been great, as he's quickly answered by email any questions or concerns I've had.

20 days POST -OP. I have had chronic pain since I was 10 years old...now 48. Had a fusion 14 years ago C4-C7, threw the back of the neck from another Dr at UCLA. The procejure was so tramatic it took me many years to go seek more help as this prior proceddure caused me to stay away from Drs regarding my neck.
I found Dr. MELIKIAN , did my reseach on him, and went to a visit. He treated me with respect and heard me as many Dr. do not. He refered me for some nerve blocks to try and avoid sergury as a 1st option. To no avail, the blocks did not work. I appreciatae the fact that Dr. Melikian is not "knife happy" and tries other lesser options first.
I took the leap and had my surgery. Had a disc replacement and c3-c4 fusion, thru the front of the neck. I expereienced no pain post op , just some soreness in the back of the neck and a low grade fever for a several days which is normal. Before surgery, I had "cricks" in my neck constantly, muscle aches in my upper back, and sholders and tightness throughout my arms , legs and everything in between. So far, most of that is gone. I am opptomistic my progress with only get better as my interanal healing contiues. I hightly recommend Dr. Melikian. He did not sell me on surgry at all. He did not over promise and under deliver. He kept my expectations in check. After such a bad experience many years prior with another Dr., this says a lot. I had lost all trust in all spince surgions before Dr. Melikian. Also, Cecillia in his office is efficient and sweet. Both Dr Melikian and Cecilia are extrememly available. They both promplty reply to email. This is a 1st that a Dr. will check on me via without prompting him first. Again, Dr. Melikian is very available and all around a great Dr. and person.

We have three locations and serve all of Southern California. We have offices in Marina Del Rey, Newport Beach, and Los Angeles.
Why is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery more ideal for patients than open surgery?
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery has allowed us to achieve the same goals of open surgery but with smaller incisions and less disruption of surrounding tissue. This allows for faster recovery times and better long-term outcomes.
What’s the benefit of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?
This technique allows for less downtime, faster recovery, and less blood loss. These techniques also allow for surgery to be done outpatient in our surgical center with a zero MRSA infection rate.
What’s Causing My Back Pain?
The most common cause of back pain tends to be from strained muscles. The pain tends to be most severe right after the injury but can gradually worsen over the first few hours. Strain in your back muscles is most often caused by asking too much of them (ie. Lifting a heavy item) or asking them to work for too long (ie. moving boxes all day long at work).
If I’m experiencing back pain, when should I see my doctor?
Most of the time, injuries such as back strain will resolve within a few weeks with rest and anti-inflammatory medications.
Warning signs which should prompt a visit to the doctor include:
• Pain which is getting worse not better
• Pain so severe that you are unable to walk or go about your activities of daily living
• Accompanying weakness, numbness, or tingling.
• Pain that occurs after a fall or accident
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• You have a history of osteoporosis or compression fracture. For more information on osteoporosis, visit this website to read, “5 Signs Your Osteoporosis May Be Worse Than You Thought. https://www.nextavenue.org/5-signs-your-osteoporosis-may-be-worse-than-you-thought/

When Should I See My Doctor for neck pain?
Most of the time, injuries such as neck strain will resolve within a few weeks with rest and anti-inflammatory medications.
Warning signs which should prompt a visit to the doctor include:
• Pain which is getting worse, not better
• Pain so severe that you are unable to walk or go about your activities of daily living
• Accompanying arm or leg weakness, numbness, or tingling.
• Pain that occurs after a fall or accident
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Pain that has not improved after 4-6 weeks of conservative treatment.
• If you are experiencing these symptoms, call your doctor for an appointment so that you can be given a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
How is a herniated disc diagnosed and treated?
To make the diagnosis, your doctor will perform a history and physical exam to see if your symptoms are consistent with a ruptured disc. If appropriate, an MRI of your neck or back will show the exact location and size of the herniation.
The treatment goals are to relieve the discomfort and prevent any permanent injury to your nerves. Treatments range from medications and physical therapy to epidural steroid injections or surgery. Depending on the location and size of the disc, surgical intervention may consist of removing only the piece of the disc that has herniated or removing the entire disc.
What Are My Treatment Options for Degenerative Disc Disease?
After a diagnosis of degenerative disc disease has been made, we will go over your treatment options specific to your particular situation. In the absence of arm or leg weakness, treatment options will always begin with conservative treatments such as physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, and rest. Other options to discuss are when to add acupuncture or chiropractic treatments into your treatment regimen. Surgical treatments can be discussed if conservative treatment fails to provide relief or if you have associated nerve compression causing arm or leg weakness. Depending on the scenario, these can range from minimally invasive decompression surgery to artificial disk replacement or fusion.
