I’ve worked with Joseph for several years, both in-person and remote training and he’s incredibly knowledgeable and methodical. He has a roadmap to get you results and makes sure you know the roadmap as you go. Everything feels intentional, building movement from the ground up. With his help I feel stronger, more coordinated and connected in my 40s than I did even in my 20s.

For the past three years, I’ve trained with Joseph at Project Function in Hayward, and it’s been transformative. After years of pain from old sports injuries, Functional Patterns unique fascia-focused training helped me rebuild and restructure my body from the inside out.
The first year was tough, more rehab, pain management and basics than heavy lifting or conditioning (honestly, felt a bit limited at first.) However, after looking back, this work laid the necessary foundations for the physically demanding work to come later. Over time, my pain has significantly decreased, I’ve leaned out, and gained muscle and strength sustainably.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a quick summer body, this program is likely not for you; But if you want long-term functional health, FP’s approach will empower you to move better, feel better, and actually sustain it for life.
I’m 40 now and feel/look better than I did in my early 30s!
About the gym and culture: Everyone is genuinely kind and centered around the common goal of day to day better living. It’s been a joy working with these people.
Joe, the business owner and trainer, put in a lot of work developing a strong community and a discipline around the hygiene/cleanliness of the gym space and thoughtfulness around how we all share it and use it (which is something I really appreciate.)
In short, work with Project Function Hayward if you care about your long-term functional health, building around a solid support system across all ages and body types, and a clean space where the owner cares about how it’s used.
I have been training with Joe for over five years, and it has truly been a game changer.
Before working with him, I was in constant pain from my desk job and relied on weekly visits to my chiropractor. Joe taught me how to improve my posture, move correctly, and build a stronger mind-body connection. Through consistent Functional Patterns training, my pain gradually eased, and my chiropractor visits decreased from weekly to just once a month.
Beyond helping me become stronger and more mobile, Joe has given me the tools and knowledge to take better care of my body every day. I’m incredibly grateful for his guidance and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their health, mobility, and overall quality of life. 💪✨

I used to struggle with lower back and shoulder pain. After going through the program at Project Function I no longer have any back or shoulder pain and have full mobility in both. I am also far more coordinated than when I started. Joseph is an excellent trainer with many tips that help to understand the root of the problem and how to fix it, also ensuring you are performing the exercise in the correct form. I would highly recommend Project Function to anyone with pain or poor posture.

Training with Joe for over two years — followed him from the Oakland location to Hayward, and I'd follow him anywhere else he goes. Functional Patterns is a serious, technical movement system: fascia, gait, posture, breathing — not a workout class. Joe is exceptional at it. He sees what's actually going on in your body and corrects things you didn't know were broken. Concrete result for me: chronic neck and skull pain I'd carried for years is finally improving. The space at Project Function is clean and focused. Book a session with Joe and commit to the program — it's worth the drive.
