Group Therapy

Group therapy is an important part of any mental health treatment program. Many people have suffered alone, with no one they felt they could trust to share their story with. That feeling of isolation can be incredibly painful. At Wings Recovery, we provide compassionate group therapy guided by skilled therapists to ensure you always feel safe and comfortable. Our gender-specific group sessions are the perfect opportunity to practice skills learned in individual sessions, as well as in group classes where you learn to give and receive support in ways that honor your needs and individuality while respecting those of others. These skills will improve your interpersonal relationships and the way you interact with others in your day-to-day life.

Holistic Therapy Programs

Balance. We all know it’s vital to maintaining optimal mental health. Most traditional therapies work primarily with the mind, but at Wings Recovery, we believe it’s important to include mind, body, and spirit to maintain emotional balance. That’s why we include body-based holistic treatments like acupuncture, cupping, equine therapy, and nutrition in our program, as well as opportunities to calm your nervous system through meditation and mindfulness training.

Individual Therapy

At Wings Recovery Women’s and Men’s Programs, individual therapy is at the core of the treatment experience. When you join one of our gender–specific San Diego mental health treatment programs (residential, PHP, or IOP) you will be assigned an individual therapist and trauma therapist. We recognize the importance of one-on-one care in the healing process and have made great efforts to ensure that our clients receive at least four individual sessions each week during the residential level of care . We offer more individual therapy sessions than other treatment programs because we believe the individual treatment you get is core to your healing process. Reach out today to schedule an initial consultation.

Trauma & PTSD Therapy

Located in Carlsbad, California – right here in San Diego County, Wings Recovery offers a compassionate space for individuals seeking to understand, process, and move beyond the impact of trauma. Our trauma and PTSD therapy programs combine proven clinical methods with holistic, whole-person care – helping you build safety, connection, and lasting emotional stability. Whether you’ve experienced a single traumatic event or carry the weight of complex, long-term trauma, our specialized team can help you begin healing on every level – mind, body, and spirit. Mental health is not linear. Many mental health conditions don’t make themselves known until later in life, often evolving alongside us.

First Responders and Military

As first responders and military personnel, you are constantly exposed to dangerous, stressful, and sometimes life-threatening experiences. No shift is routine, and you can experience stress due to the uncertainty of each situation. These experiences and repeated job stressors can create obstacles, scarring both the mind and body. As first responders and active duty service members, you are at an increased risk of experiencing traumatic events and situations. If you ignore or try to mask the feelings of fear, anxiety, and stress that these events produce, they can have lasting impacts on your mental health.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy reprocesses memories to be less vivid or less disturbing, utilizing both halves of the brain via bilateral stimulation. Negative thoughts are reformulated as the client processes emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an innovative therapy option that can provide quicker healing compared to other modalities.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.

I can’t thank Wings Recovery enough for everything they have done for me. From the very first phone call to the day I graduated, I was treated with genuine compassion, dignity, and respect. Every director, therapist, clinician, CCT, peer, and staff member played a role in helping me heal. They didn’t just provide treatment they created a safe environment where I felt seen, heard, and supported. A special thank you to Alixie, Carlos, Justin, Alexis, Ryan, Sherry, Lenora, Laura, Giana, Paul, and Dr. C. Your compassion, encouragement, and dedication made a lasting impact on my life. Thank you for believing in me and helping me grow. **I purposely didn’t include Daniel in this because he already receives well-deserved recognition every day and weekly shoutouts. But I still wanted to say this. Sincerely, Daniel is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. He’s passionate about what he does, genuinely funny, compassionate, and goes above and beyond. To me, he’s been more than just a client technician he’s been a friend. He believed in me when I needed it, encouraged me, and always paid attention to the little details that made a big difference. Those things never went unnoticed. Thank you, Daniel, for being exactly who you are. You’ve made a difference in my life, and I’ll always be grateful.** Wings Recovery became more than a program to me it became part of my chosen family. The care here is truly trauma-informed, and every staff member genuinely wants to see people heal and succeed. They meet people where they are without judgment and walk alongside them every step of the way. Wings Recovery truly transforms lives. It will always feel like home to me, and I am grateful that God led me here. If you or someone you love is looking for a place where healing, compassion, and recovery come first, I wholeheartedly recommend Wings Recovery. Thank you for changing my life. I will never forget all of you.

TLDR: If you’re considering Wings for dual-diagnosis/ co-occurring treatment, I strongly encourage you to do extensive research first. My biggest concerns were: • Programming was repetitive and not engaging whatsoever. • Management was inconsistent and at times irresponsible. • I was told my urine would be lab tested weekly for 7-OH/Kratom, but it wasn’t, which directly affected decisions about my treatment after I relapsed. • Housing and transportation were major issues if you don’t have a car. • Clinical decisions often felt inconsistent, leaving me questioning whether they were based on clinical judgment or something else. I’m writing this to help others make an informed decision. I have nothing to gain from writing this review. I only hope it prevents someone from wasting time or experiencing further harm because of incompetency or a lack of concern. I was at Wings from February, 2026 through June, 2026. During my four months there many clients struggled with the programming, were frustrated with management, felt worse because of the extreme boredom, and frequently voiced concerns about the Clinical Director, Nancy. I came to Wings because I’m an opiate addict with PTSD, depression, and anxiety after relapsing twice at another treatment center. Wings was presented to me as a dual-diagnosis program specializing in both mental health and substance use. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. The mental health programming was agonizingly repetitive, dry, and largely a waste of time. Most facilitators didn’t seem to have their heart in it, and that too often carried over to the clients’ experience. There is so much to learn about mental health, yet Wings consistently missed the mark. Housing was another major struggle. Residential felt helplessly trapped. During PHP/IOP, if you don’t have a car, don’t expect rides to meetings, meaningful outings beyond the beach, or consistent supervision. I also found the substance use treatment severely lacking. Susie has many strengths, but she simply wasn’t available enough to provide consistent counseling. In my experience, she also had significant boundary issues and I saw her own mental health struggles spill over into her work with clients. Most clients met with her on a monthly or bi-monthly basis but she would frequently meet with a good friend of mine 3–4 times per week, and these meetings included discussions about other clients and personal matters that were inappropriate in a therapeutic setting. My own experience with her being inconsistent and vindictive toward me ultimately played a major role in how my treatment ended. On my first day, I specifically asked Susie whether my urine would be tested for 7-OH/Kratom. I was assured it would be sent to the lab weekly. After I relapsed, I learned that had never happened. Instead, Wings used a dipstick test 2 weeks after my relapse, and my sobriety was judged based on that result rather than lab trends. Because 7-OH can remain detectable for 2+ weeks, I tested positive despite not using since my relapse 2 weeks earlier. Had the promise of lab testing actually been done, there would have been prior results showing my levels decreasing over time. Instead, there was no data to support what I had been telling them all along. (For anyone wondering, I have 91 days clean today and I’m doing great.) After that, I was told Wings “had nothing left to offer me,” and that it “wasn’t the right program for me”. Then, almost immediately afterward, I was told that the Clinical Director, Nancy, had changed her mind and I could stay if I moved into sober living. That level of inconsistency is frightening in an environment where people are trusting staff with their lives. Despite everything, there were genuinely wonderful staff members who made my time there bearable. Shout-out to these GEMS: Sherri, Dani, Alexis, Sydney, Kodi, Jay, Amy, Angelina, Rachel, Danielle, Andy and Christian. There were also therapists I would avoid based on my experience, including Lisa (RUN!) and Guli (doesn’t seem to care at all).

I traveled all the way from Philadelphia after years of unsuccessful attempts to work through traumatic experiences I had carried since my teenage years. When I arrived at Wings, I truly believed I was beyond help and that I would always suffer from severe PTSD symptoms. The person I am today is not the same person who walked through those doors. Wings gave me the tools and support to heal, manage my trauma in healthy ways, and find myself again. My trauma didn’t disappear, but it no longer controls my life. Because of Wings, I have been able to move forward with purpose, confidence, and hope. I will always be grateful for the role they played in helping me reclaim my life.
