Dr. Almomani inserted a Mitral clip 6 weeks ago. The surgery was to last 2 to 3 hours. It was completed in 1 hour and 3 minutes. Was discharged the next day. Never had 1 minute of pain or soreness. The staff is amazing. Nurse Courtney, Maddie, you are all exactly where God would have you be. I am forever grateful for the excellent care I received at University Heart and Valve Center.

Dr Almomani and Nurse Courtney are fabulous. I had surgery one year ago to insert two Pascal clips on my mitral valve. My pre op care, the surgery, and my follow up care has been great. Sincerely Larry Spriggs

For the past 4+ months, I have been under the care of this outstanding department, within University Health's Cardiology Dept. Starting with the "Gatekeepers," i.e., Patient Care Coordinators& SChedulers, RN's Courtney and Vanessa. They have been extremely knowledgeable, compassionate and supportive in scheduling my plethora of treatments. The doctors, especially Dr's Hammadah, Prasad, Lopez, Agoston with AGNP Adamski and accompanied by CRNA's Stephanie and Treva have all been outstanding in providing me with exemplary, humane and sympathetic care. I hope University Health's C-Suite leadership knows how lucky and privileged their hospital is to have such a dynamic and well-trained team of professionals. I wouldn't hesitate to give my highest and unconditional recommendation to anyone needing their services.
Frequently Asked Questions About Structural Heart and Valve Center - University Hospital
What services does the Structural Heart and Valve Center provide?
The Structural Heart and Valve Center diagnoses and treats complex valvular and structural heart conditions. Services include transcatheter and surgical valve therapies such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral and tricuspid therapies, balloon valvuloplasty, and closure of structural heart defects such as ASD or PFO. Care is coordinated through a multidisciplinary heart team that includes interventional cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, imaging specialists, and dedicated valve coordinators.
What is TAVR and how does it work?
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a narrowed aortic valve. A replacement valve is delivered through a catheter, most often through an artery in the leg, and positioned within the diseased valve using advanced imaging guidance. Many TAVR procedures are performed using moderate sedation rather than general anesthesia, depending on a patient’s needs.
Who is a candidate for TAVR or other transcatheter valve therapies?
Candidates are patients with symptomatic valve disease, such as aortic stenosis or mitral regurgitation. Each patient is evaluated by the heart team using imaging studies and medical history to determine the most appropriate treatment approach. Transcatheter options may be recommended for patients who are at higher surgical risk or who may benefit from a less invasive procedure.
How should I prepare for a procedure (for example TAVR)?
Your care team will provide individualized pre-procedure instructions. Preparation may include completing imaging and cardiac testing, reviewing medications, and following fasting or medication guidelines before the procedure. Patients are encouraged to bring a current medication list and personal items in case an overnight stay is recommended.
What should I expect for recovery and hospital stay?
Recovery time is often shorter than with open-heart surgery, though it varies by patient and procedure. Many patients return home within one to two days after TAVR. Your care team will provide discharge instructions, schedule follow-up visits and imaging, and offer guidance on activity levels and long-term heart health.
How do I make an appointment or refer a patient to the Structural Heart and Valve Center?
To request an appointment or refer a patient, call the Structural Heart and Valve Center at 210-358-0490 at University Hospital. The valve clinic team will assist with scheduling, evaluation, and next steps in the care process.
