Dr. Gernsback and PA Whitney are incredible. My 10 month old needed surgery, and I couldn’t have asked for a better team to take care of my son. They treated him like he was family. Even for our follow up, he was happy to see them and wasn’t scared around them. Dr. Gernsback was very conservative and didn’t jump to the most invasive option unless absolutely necessary. She was kind and matter of fact in a good way and answered every question we had before and after surgery. I never felt rushed and felt they really wanted to make sure we felt comfortable and equipped. The phone system may suck, but everyone from the office staff, to Denise (the sweet tech), to the PA and doctors were sweet and fabulous! I’m so thankful this is the team that performed our surgery and that everything went well with the surgery. If you need someone to help your child, I would highly recommend this team.

Neurosurgeon, Dr. Ali Seifi and his Team, saved my daughter's life!! He was conducting class and stopped to ask me who I was when she was in Neuro ICU. He fought to escalate her care to immediate surgery!! I am grateful for him for seeing my daughter through my eyes. Thank you so much!!

They have always listened to my concerns, treat me very good for the last 10 years. I stop coming just because I was lazy, and when came back I had the same neurologist that I have had for my whole life and he show me concern about the fact that I stop coming. They have help me a lot since I started with them.

The parking is a mess, no one knows how to give clear instructions on how to get anywhere. Spent 30 minutes trying to find the clinic we were suppose to go to after being giving the wrong instructions. I did however like the Dr. He listened to our concerns and explained what he thinks is going on without talking down to me. As much as I don't like this hospital, we will be keeping her neurologist here. I do advise setting aside 1 hr to find parking though.

I'd give a zero, if that were an option. After my son was having new symptoms, we called a telenurse, who advised us to go to urgent care asap. They took blood and told us to contact his neurologist. We called Dr. Koneru's office (adult neuro) and left three different messages. Over a month later--no response. Fortunately, his symptoms had improved during that time, but we were still anxious to get answers at his upcoming appointment. However, their office notified us by mail--the day before the appointment--that they had cancelled it. They didn't bother to reschedule it, so I called their office. After trying several times to get through (only to get to voicemail, which they never respond to either), I have finally had it. I am finding a new neurologist for my son. I'm posting this to hopefully steer away potential clients from having a similar experience. Go somewhere else. This level of care (or lack of, rather) is absolutely unacceptable, and I feel for his other patients. Everyone deserves better.
Frequently Asked Questions About Neurosurgery Clinic (Adult & Pediatric) - University Hospital
Do you provide care for both adults and children?
Yes. University Health / University Hospital provides both adult and pediatric neurosurgery services — the Neuroscience Center of Excellence and pediatric neurosurgery teams treat children (including conditions such as Chiari malformation and craniosynostosis) as well as adults.
How do I make an appointment for the Neurosurgery Clinic?
You can request an appointment by calling the Neurosurgery clinic phone number listed for University Hospital (adult neurosurgery: 210-358-8555) or using the University Health appointment request channels. Referrals or prior authorization may be required by some insurers; check with your provider.
Do I need recent imaging (MRI/CT) for my first appointment?
Yes — many neurosurgery practices request that you bring recent imaging (MRI/CT) and relevant reports to your initial visit. If imaging is older than the timeframe required by the clinic (often ~6 months for some centers), the clinic may request updated studies.
What should I bring to my initial consultation?
Bring a valid photo ID, insurance information, any referral paperwork (if required), a list of current medications, and copies of prior medical records and imaging (discs or reports) so the neurosurgeon can review them.
What should I do in a medical emergency?
If you are experiencing a life‑threatening emergency, call 911 or go immediately to the nearest emergency room. For urgent neurosurgical issues involving established patients, follow the clinic’s emergency contact instructions or the hospital paging instructions provided at the time of care.
How should I prepare for brain or spine surgery?
Follow the preoperative instructions from your surgical team, which commonly include medical clearance from your primary doctor or specialists as needed, guidance on stopping certain medications (e.g., blood thinners) before surgery, and fasting instructions (do not eat or drink after midnight before surgery unless told otherwise). Your surgical team will give procedure‑specific instructions.
What types of conditions and procedures do you treat?
University Health’s neurosurgery team treats a broad range of brain and spine conditions (brain tumors, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, spine disorders, pediatric congenital conditions, peripheral nerve issues) and performs procedures including minimally invasive spine surgery, neurosurgical oncology, endovascular procedures and specialized pediatric neurosurgeries.
