Dry eye is a common condition, and it can be difficult to determine when regular discomfort requires medical attention. We recommend seeking treatment if you consistently experience symptoms that persist for several weeks or more, such as: persistent dryness, stinging, or burning; gritty or sandy sensations in your eye; recurring redness or irritation; blurred or fluctuating vision, particularly after reading or screen time; watery eyes (which can actually be a response to dryness); eye fatigue or discomfort by day's end; difficulty with contact lens wear; light sensitivity; or if you find yourself using artificial tears multiple times daily. Temporary dryness that improves with rest or blinking is typically not concerning, but persistent or worsening symptoms indicate treatment would be beneficial.
