I recently took a Reformer Flow 1.5 class here after missing my usual Control 1.5 reservation at the Bel Air location. It ended up being one of the most challenging classes I’ve ever taken. Robin led it incredibly well, and in terms of difficulty, it was actually tougher than many of the Control 1.5 classes I take regularly. I even mentioned on my way out that it felt more like a Control-level class than some of my actual Control sessions to her on my way out. That said, I didn’t feel very welcomed. When I spoke to Robin after class, her expression was more of a “smize” than a smile… it came across like she wasn’t really interested in engaging with me and was just waiting for the conversation to be over. That interaction stuck with me. I was surprised to find out she was the manager of this location. Also, in hindsight, the class structure was closer to a Control 1.5 than a typical Reformer Flow. We only used the reformer during the warm-up and for like half a second to cool-down; the rest of the time was spent at the barre. That format worked for me on that day since I was looking for a Control 1.5-style workout anyway but generally, when I sign up for a Reformer Flow class, I expect to spend most of the session on the reformer. As much as I appreciated the intensity of the workout, I haven’t felt inclined to return, largely because of how I was treated. I felt like an outsider in the room. Some of the verbal cues throughout class also felt unnecessarily harsh and, at times, a little shady. It reminded me of the more traditional side of Pilates… the kind that can be both inspiring and, unfortunately, exclusionary. It’s probably also worth mentioning that I’m African American, plus-sized, and was wearing my natural hair….. i’m not saying that was a factor and how I was treated, but I can’t say it wasn’t either.

I tried this studio because I moved around the corner. I purchased the unlimited package over the phone with the manager after having gone to an intro class. I was told I could upgrade or downgrade at any point. After trying a couple of classes, I noticed the instructors didn’t bother to introduce themselves and the class was very dull. One instructor said she couldn’t talk and play music at the same time. I asked for a refund and was told not only did I have to pay this month, but also for one more month along with a $100 cancellation fee. This was not mentioned in the intro class nor by the manager when I purchased the membership over the phone. The manager suggested I take her class along with two other instructors, but the classes she suggested have 5-7 person waitlists. This suggests the studio only has 2-3 decent instructors and the manager herself isn’t confident in the remainder of her employees. I am choosing to drive 15 minutes to my old studio which is not convenient given I have a baby at home, but so much more worth it than setting for this one around the corner.

I started going to this studio two weeks ago and have been really enjoying the classes I’ve attended. I only wish the app worked better so there aren’t any confusion on charges.
