During your first visit, we will examine the affected areas to determine if a doppler duplex ultrasound scan is necessary. Once we've identified appropriate treatments, our vascular surgeon in Dallas, TX will discuss costs and other relevant details with you to ensure you're fully informed.
When should I schedule a consultation?
It's advisable to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sun for varicose veins if you experience any of the following: swollen, red, tender, or warm veins; sores or rashes near the ankle; thickened or discolored skin on the ankle and calf; bleeding from a varicose vein; leg symptoms interfering with daily activities; or if the appearance of the veins is causing distress. Even mild pain should prompt you to seek help. Additionally, it's important to take preventive measures to stop varicose veins from worsening, even if you don't currently require medical attention.
How are varicose veins diagnosed?
Varicose veins are typically diagnosed through a physical examination. Your doctor will observe your legs while you're standing or sitting with your legs hanging down. They may inquire about your symptoms, including any pain you're experiencing. In some cases, additional tests may be necessary to determine the extent of the problem and rule out other conditions. An ultrasound is commonly used, which employs sound waves to create images of your body's structures, allowing visualization of vein structure, assessment of blood flow, and detection of blood clots.
Why do I need to get an ultrasound exam?
An ultrasound exam, specifically a doppler duplex ultrasound scan, is crucial in identifying the source of damaged veins. This scan provides a visual representation of the diseased, refluxing veins beneath the skin's surface. With this diagnostic tool, we can precisely identify the cause of varicose veins and develop a customized treatment plan for each patient and affected vein. This targeted approach results in quicker, more effective, and less painful treatments compared to traditional methods like vein stripping. The ultrasound scan is particularly important for patients who have undergone previous vein treatments.
Can the treatment be done during pregnancy? Or how soon after if not during?
Sun Vein & Vascular generally advises patients to wait for two months after delivery before undergoing treatment. We do not recommend treatment during pregnancy.
Will insurance cover my treatments?
Insurance typically covers a significant portion of the treatment cost if there is documented venous insufficiency with associated symptoms. How do I know if I have Lymphedema or Lipedema?
