I joined the gym, and was told I needed an orientation before I would be allowed to work out on the equipment. I reached out several times and got no response, I finally went in and was told somebody would get in touch with me with available time for my orientation. They reached out, but it was for a day that I had something else scheduled. I asked them to please reschedule on another day but never heard back from them. Four months of membership dues, never got to lift a single weight.

I am the opposite of a gym rat. I’m an 80 year old male, introverted, and typically see going to a gym as right up there with root canals. But an accident last year left me in obvious need of help to repair my body, especially with balance issues. I’d been at BodyWise before, but dropped out with COVID. But I did remember it as a friendly, non threatening place whose two owners, Kay and Don, were real professionals who clearly were dedicated to and loved their work. So, for me, this was much more promising than the better known gyms scattered across the city. So, my partner and I joined. It has been a good thing. Kay got me set up. Kay is: an accomplished bodybuilder, a girly girl, and a would-be stand up comic. She so obviously cares, but is never overbearing. Kidding around with her is fun, but anyone who is rude or obnoxious isn’t tolerated for long. I told her that the first time anyone said “no pain, no gain”, I’d head for the exit. Hasn’t happened. The atmosphere is quietly friendly. All ages. Male and female. Serious body builders (with the expected grunts and groans) and those of us just trying to get our bodies out of the red zone. Not fancy, but spotlessly clean. Every piece of equipment imaginable. There are personal trainers who, for a reasonable fee, will work with you individually to create a program to meet your specific goals. I was paired with Mia, who’d been a treasure. She motivates without prodding. She is acutely aware of my limits and never pushes me too far, while encouraging progress. The obvious thing is to get on the device and do whatever it does. But the part that’s so easy to to forget is that it’s not just the what, but the how - the form. She will point out that on one machine I was using my back too much instead of my legs. Would I have tumbled to that? Doubtful. I’m now also working with Brandon, an on site physical therapist, who is like-able and highly skilled and will work with Mia to create a multifaceted program for me. So, while it was Kay, with her sharp wit and total credibility that drew me in, it is the positive, relaxed atmosphere that makes going there, can I say it? something I look forward to.

Bodywise Gym is a complete and immaculate facility staffed with knowledgeable, competent, and congenial trainers. Management/owners are on hand, attentive and encouraging to everyone. No-one is in your face so you are free to follow your own routine without interference or there is always a friendly trainer available to answer questions. Clientele runs the gamut of adults from late teens to eighty+ with everyone engaged in pursuing their own objectives. Classes are available for group work, and there is a well qualified physical therapist housed on the premises. As a senior, I am indebted to the management for getting me moving on my own path to strength and mobility so that I can easily move about on my own. It is inspirational to see the younger men and women diligently working towards their goals, and I hope they are inspired by all the seniors doing the same.

Bodywise is a no nonsense, get in, get out, get er done kind of gym. Oh wait, some nonsense, the owners are a lot of fun. The vibe is comfortable for people of all ages. The equipment is well maintained, the trainers are top notch. See you there.
