“You have cataracts.” 😳
Presbyopia came knocking right on time around age 42. But up until then, I had never needed glasses! (Presbyopia is the normal worsening of vision with age, especially the ability to see things close up!) Being part of Team Cape has its perks! One being that I have easy access to regular eye exams! 🤓
I will never forget being in that chair… eyes dilated… expecting nothing but “everything looks good”. But there was a second part to it. Yes everything looked good but he finished with… “you have cataracts”. Honestly, I could not process what I was hearing and my first thought was that he was joking with me. More context… I am a circulator over on the surgery side of Cape Regional/ Cape Surgery. I am around Dr. Cape a lot and he likes to joke. But this was no joke. He took some pictures and showed me on the monitor. He explained that I had small, premature, posterior cataracts. He also told me that this type was fast growing and usually hereditary and that we would wait and see. I remember being kinda sad as I got up to leave the room. But my friend Dana (she works both in the clinic and in surgery) smiled as she walked me out and said something that completely changed my mindset! “MJ! This is a good thing! You’ll be able to get this done one of the best doctors in the country while you’re still relatively young!”
Skip ahead to the present. About a month ago, I started to notice that even with glasses I couldn’t see well at night and the struggle was real! Maybe I just needed new glasses! After, being refracted, Lori said, “MJ, I think Dr. Cape needs to see you to see if your cataracts are the cause.” Another caveat was that my cataracts were in my central vision, which made it even worse.
Sure enough, it was time! Dr. Cape said whenever I’m ready! Lori ran me through several diagnostic tests with imaging. I was shocked to learn that just in a couple of years they had already become significant.
I was scheduled for surgery (my first ever) and I am so excited to say that I now have it behind me. It was a huge success!!!!
I cannot even begin to tell you how life changing this has been! It’s like going from an old console tv to a plasma screen! Absolutely incredible! I chose to upgrade to the new Light Adjustable Lens, which is a lens that can be “tweaked” to my preference up to 3 times before locking in. In my case, this lens also meant I would not be heavily dependent on readers either! Without any adjustments, I am seeing 20/20 distance and almost as well up close! It’s amazing! Hearing patients say that now they can see dust is one thing but seeing my baseboards in my OWN house after surgery was CRAZY! 🤣 And who is that in the mirror because these wrinkles were not there before! I joke but it has been quite the shock!
The most important part…
Everyone was so good to me! From the clinic to insurance to surgery…
so good! But here’s the thing, I don’t feel like I was treated better than any other patient. It’s just how we treat people EVERY DAY! It was so heartwarming to be on the receiving side of it all. Words just simply do not begin to convey my feelings. I felt very safe and well cared for by all!
Dr. Cape called me both afternoons of surgery just like he does every surgery patient. My surgeries were on consecutive Fridays and I worked through the week just like always… expect (in my case) I DID NOT NEED GLASSES! I think it’s an adjustment for everyone else to see me without glasses though.
I always knew I was in the very best hands and my heart is so full with gratitude. Thank you Team Cape for being the very best and thank you Dr. Cape for just being you… AMAZING! Our community is so lucky to have him! I’m not sure if folks realize that people drive from hours away to our small town to see our doctor. I’ve known for a while why…. but now I really “see” this clearly! 🤓❤️😁
So with all that being said… I wish “early” cataracts on all my friends! But, please know that you’ll be shocked at how much you’ve been missing! Enjoy the beautiful day. I sure am! 😎 -Melissa

As a 40 year health professional, I found the surgical experience seamless. I felt I was in highly capable hands with Dr. Cape performing my cataract surgery. The staff was kind and efficient and assured that my needs were met. The surgery center appeared clean and organized. I have been so pleased with my vision since the surgery. I’m so glad with my decision to drive from Memphis to have Dr.Cape operate on my eyes. I wouldn’t change a thing!
