  My wife and I have both noticed that our hearing has deteriorated over the past year or so. We saw an advertisement for a free hearing test at the Miracle Ear in Hamilton, Ohio. We made an appointment and came in. Therese the receptionist was very personable and efficient getting our information into the system. Don the specialist used a visual presentation to explain what might be various causes for hearing loss. He walked us through a very accurate description of all that is involved from sound reaching the ear to being interpreted by the brain. He gave us a good description of what levels of hearing compensation can be given by various models of hearing aids. We then each received a hearing test and were given a printed copy of the results, including which frequencies we were deficient in. We were then provided with trial models of hearing aids that were programmed to our audio profiles. We were given instructions about insertion, charging etc. My Spark hearing aids fit behind the ear, with a small wire connecting to the in-ear speaker. They amplified ambient sounds, yet have artificial intelligence to recognize and cancel out amplification of my own voice. Using Bluetooth to connect the aids to the Miracle Ear app on my phone, I could control the directionality of sounds, focusing in on people in front of me, while blocking surrounding sound. I chose to return those aids, however, for the following reasons: 1. I could not connect simultaneously to the app and to my phone or streaming. This is only an issue with Androids. 2. The Spark does not have a portable charger with its own power bank. 3. If pairing is lost, the Spark must be removed from the ear, then placed back in the charger then removed to pair. That means you would always need the charger and an electrical outlet available nearby. 4. The Spark is "locked," meaning that ONLY a Miracle Ear location can reprogram or adjust it. These limitations might not be relevant for everyone, but for me they were a "deal breaker." When I returned my hearing aids and stated why, I did not receive any high pressure response at all. Instead, I was thanked for giving constructive feedback. My wife tried a pair of "Genius" hearing aids, one step down from mine. With her hairstyle they were totally invisible. While they amplified sound well, they amplified it too well. The Genius aids, while having AI, do not have the algorithm to cancel one's own voice. My wife was hearing her own voice and breathing amplified. Over time, the human brain can often "edit out" those sounds, much like I often edit out my constant tinnitus, it did not seem like something she would be able to easily do. The Genius also does not have a portable charger, and must also be removed from the ear, placed in the charger, then removed in order to pair. There is no pairing button available. I will be returning that pair soon and am sure I will not encounter any resistance or high pressure from Don or Therese. Having reviewed as I did, I can still recommend taking the time to check out the Miracle Ear in Hamilton. There are other models available. You have nothing to lose, and will receive some good information about the state of your hearing. Don and Therese are easy and enjoyable to deal with. I came away much better aware of my hearing loss journey.
