    Rant du Jour! Good Samaritan Hospital just completed a huge renovation and expansion. The building is super modern, super showy, super large, super expensive - but the care is still super sub-standard! 5 years ago, my DIL (Daughter-in-Law) had her gall bladder removed after a rough pregnancy. She had months of pain, vomiting and mis-diagnoses which led to a premature delivery. After her gall bladder was removed, she was sent home with no care instructions, no dietary restrictions and no warning that you don't need a gall bladder to form gall stones! Fast forward 5 years, the sudden onset of intense upper chest pain, non-stop vomiting, difficulty drawing in a breath, talking or walking...all symptoms of a heart attack which was ruled out. Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat., MRI, CAT Scan w/Contrast, X-Rays, Ultrasound, blood tests - no definitive answer. Doctors seldom appear, only the nurses had any info. Fri. they recommend an Endoscopy but never schedule it. "It's Good Friday - there's no one to read the test results." REALLY? YOU'RE A TRAUMA HOSPITAL! So they sent her home Sat. afternoon and had to readmit her at 2 am when the symptoms returned! The hospital FINALLY read the test results, found 3 gall stones, scheduled the procedure to remove them for Mon. and released her Tues. She missed Easter with her 3 young children. THIS TIME, they explained that gall stones are formed in the Liver and she could continue to get them without a gall bladder. She was told the risk factors and advised to follow a low-fat diet, which is info she should have been given 5 years ago! And it's not just her - my sister, niece and a friend all had their gall bladder removed AFTER my DIL and NONE OF THEM were given any of this info! What is wrong with the medical profession today? The only info they are interested in is your insurance coverage! I am beyond disgusted.

    Came here because my daughter (17 months old) appeared to be in respiratory distress. We waited in a new waiting room area for about 20 mins, then went into the children's ED. While there the staff seemed friendly and polite. No one bothered to check and see how my daughter was breathing despite my initial concerns that she seemed to be doing a lot of belly breathing, had chest retractions, and was rapidly breathing. No one looked at her chest/belly area to observe breathing. They did use a pulse ox on her briefly at intake, a chest x ray that was clear, and a viral swab which they said was positive for RSV. Ultimately the attending physician said I should just do "supportive care" - suction and nebulizer (but they didn't administer any of this while in the ED?), and discharged us. I went home and just had a bad feeling, my daughter very clearly seemed in distress. I immediately drove to another hospital where she was promptly admitted to the PICU and we have been there for 3 days. The viral swab at the second hospital was negative for RSV but positive for rhino/enterovirus. I don't know how this happens- how does one hospital's viral swab say one thing but another says another thing the same day?!? How does a hospital offer no care or actually look at the concerns I have about my daughters breathing?!? I'm so glad I listened to my gut and took her to a different hospital, I hate to imagine what could have happened if I stayed home and listened to advice of the attending physician. While this hospital appears to be shiny and newly updated, the level of care we received was sub par and potentially endangered my child.

    My wife was admitted with severe back pain. She had stage 4 colon cancer with lung metastasis. We were told she had fluid around her heart and that draining it would help her breathing, so we agreed to the procedure. After surgery, she was extremely weak and her breathing did not improve. A drain was left in for two days, but we were never clearly told if the fluid had resolved. The next day, we were told the fluid had returned and that she needed another surgery. At that point, she was in very poor condition—barely eating, struggling to breathe, and unable to speak more than a few words. Initially, she did not want another procedure, but we were told it would help her. We were told the second surgery would be simple, take about 40 minutes, and involve one tube. Instead, it lasted about 2.5 hours and she came out with two tubes. After that, her condition worsened. She required ICU care, her breathing was extremely labored, and her pain was severe. She never improved. Communication was very poor. Doctors mostly spoke to my wife while she was heavily medicated, and I was not properly informed unless I was physically there. Sadly, my wife passed away. We were given hope that these procedures would help her, but the outcome was the opposite. I believe there was a lack of transparency, poor communication, and questionable decision-making given her fragile condition.

    Teresa G. in care management made me feel super uncomfortable!!! She was beyond rude and practically forced me to sign discharge papers when I was not ready to leave and crying in so much pain. She gave me & my dad such a nasty attitude trying to push me out of there, she hadn’t seen me once or knew my situation and was making my Dr send me home to free up a bed. When the Dr came back to talk alone she still passes by my room and gave me dirty looks. Not the right person to hire for “care management” at a hospital. will never feel comfortable staying here again. Also while In the ER beforehand , was left crying in agony while the nurses forgot to turn on iv with medication and made me wait for two hours without checking in on me - my mother kept looking for nurses and they would just say ok and walk away and never come in or send anyone or even let my dr know. The Dr in the ER told me all I had was a UTI meanwhile I was in sepsis. Literally just go anywhere else guys.

    Nurse Dawn in the Ambulatory Surgery Dept was amazing. She put me at ease, extremely supportive and caring. It was a night and day experience from my stay at LIJ. The nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital really genuinely cared. I wasn’t pressured to change my stance on No Blood. I truly respect Nurse Dawn. Please let Nurse Dawn, and Nurse Nicole and Donna that they are truly an excellent representation of the Good Samaritan and if I have any future procedures or surgeries it will be done at Good Samaritan Hospital. I did complete the survey and forgot Nurse Dawn on the survey. Truly an oversight because she was the Best and didn’t let her workload interfere with the quality of care. Please give Nurses like Nurse Dawn and Nurse Nicole their flowers and let them know that they truly deserve this recognition. Donna was amazing too.
